This time last year, we started spinning an early demo recording of "And The Hazy Sea" from Cymbals Eat Guitars. Since those early plays on the station, they've been through the kind of whirlwind journey that most indie bands can only dream of.
Joseph "Ferocious" D'Agostino sent us a CD-R of the band's debut record "Why There Are Mountains" at the end of 2008. We really loved it and added it to the WOXY playlist on January 6th, 2009. Then, the accolades from blogs and websites began to roll in as the months went on. In mid-March, Pitchfork blessed the album with a 'Best New Music' review and the rest, as they say, is history.
When the 4-piece from Staten Island, NY arrived at our studios on their way home from playing at the Pitchfork Music Festival, Joseph revealed that he thought he had bronchitis. He was determined to make it through the session, but the band initially tailored their setlist to songs that would be easier for him to sing.
Once we went live, that was thrown out the window. They made an impulse substitution before they played their third song and then added a fifth track to the set when Joseph felt he could sing one more. A few coughs between tracks aside, you would never know he wasn't feeling well. It was definitely a memorable session that begins with a brand new, previously unreleased song.
Why There Are Mountains is getting a proper nationwide release on September 22nd. They will also be performing on our WOXY.com stage at the Monolith Festival on September 12th while in the midst of a national tour with The Pains Of Being Pure At Heart.
