When word got around the Internet earlier today that the source code for the very highly anticipated Half-Life 2 had been leaked, almost everyone brushed it off as pure rumor. Unfortunately for Valve, this is no rumor; it is very much real and could be quite detrimental to the project. Today Gabe Newell, Managing Director of Valve Software, posted confirmation of the events on the forum of Halflife2.net. Below is his post. Please read it carefully, as Gabe needs help from anyone who might be able to assist in this urgent matter.

How is it going to be detrimental to the project. It's not like they're really developing it anymore...it gets released soon, right? And wasn't Valve gonna' release an editor with the game anyways? I just don't get it.

discussion on /. said that this story got blown out of proportion and was probably done (the leak) the first time around as well. It was probably for people working on mods. So, no, it shouldn't have any negative affects upon HL2.

ok, here's (http://cgi.gamefaqs.com/boards/genmessage.asp?board=36599&topic=10382852) an article that breaks down why this is so wrong. i've read several others that mirror the same thoughts. i don't know as much about programming, so these guys could be way off? not sure. seems like a rough situation to me. five years of work exposed, plus the obligations to third-party folks like those who created the Havok physics engine. (check out the screen shots for Max Payne 2 on gamespot.com for examples of the Havok engine. tasty.)
what game editor shows you the source code? i've used several and was only able to make maps/levels/skins/mods, etc. i've not heard of development teams releasing source code until the game was obsolete. they sell rights to use their engines, just like they sell the rights to users to play a copy of their game.
HL2 has been pushed back until December. could end up being longer. some say it's the leak, but i've also read a lot about issues with nVidia cards. big surprise. Valve went with ati for their "official" card and HL2 will ship with the newest ati card when the game is finally released. (and nVidia chips were booted for the xbox 2 in favor of ati. yay!)

suck (http://www.gamespot.com/pc/action/halflife2/news_6076466.html). the leak is being blamed.

Now if they'd just leak the damned game out to the stores, I'd be happy.
