Longtime fans of Saves the Day are liable to be skeptical of In Reverie at first. Lead singer Chris Conley, through either reverse puberty or studio tweaking, manages to come off sounding like a young Billy Corgran throughout. The guitars sound cleaner, the songs catchier. The lyrics are, for the most part, a lot less visceral and confrontational than their previous material. Gone also are the archetypal "oomp-cha oomp-cha oomp-cha" punk drumming that graced some of their earlier tracks. In all honesty, I don't know if I would have immediately recognized this album as the work of Saves The Day had I given it a blind listen.

That being said, it should be said that despite some changes in their sound, this is a good album for the same reasons that (I think) their other albums are good... introspective lyrics, a talented singer, and staying power as a collection of good songs, not just a hit and some fluff.

Personal high points include track 4, Monkey, a revision and
re-recording of an older demo (alterately titled Time Sprocket) , whose terrible hiss and poor audio quality I have tolerated for the past few years in order to enjoy what is now a rather touching song.

Track 8, Where Are You, reminds me a lot of their previous material, and I was closer to rocking out during that track than any other on the album.

I you like Saves The Day, but aren't sure you like In Reverie, keep listening. Chances are, despite it's whimsy, it'll grow on you. If you hate Saves the Day already, chances are you're not going to love the new album... or read this review.
