Well, that's not the name of the album, but that's what I ask myself as I'm listening to it. The album is titled "I Believe" btw. And his stint outside of The Charlatans' circle is experimental and celebratory. I read several preview pieces about the album before the single even came out. Most of them said the same thing: California influence, falsetto, use of horns.....blah, blah, blah.
Pooey to the lot of them. The album is about being happy. It's pure. It's simple. And what's so bad about being happy? Seems like we've embraced being miserable for quite long enough. Got that down. No problem. Pretty easy, actually--maybe too easy. But listening to this album makes me question why I listen to that other dribble. Now I'm not going to throw away my Alice in Chains or Smiths albums, but this album helps to give perspective to it all.
Don't get me wrong...."I Believe" isn't trying to sell you an idea or send deep messages. I think it's just celebrating what we sometimes take for granted. This album is a joy and not at all what I expected. Be prepared for a nice surprise if you decide to check it out--there is no repetition or overproduction, just good vibes about livin' the life. Good music to hang out to.
