Okay, everyone's got a few CD's they think they want, but aren't sure whether to take the 12-15 dollar plunge. So, I figure we could ask about albums here, then maybe someone who's heard it can give a brief overview of it.
Basically, it comes down to me wanting new music, but not being able to afford it all...so I'm instead trying to figure out the best 2-3 to buy.
The Decemberists - castaways and cutouts
The Kills - Keep on your mean side
Spoon
Manitoba
Ween - quebec

I would say Spoon & Manitoba.
You can't go wrong w/ these two.
i don't know that much about The Decemberists or The Kills.
Ween- quebec: There are some good parts to this album, but overall, it didn't impress me very much. Maybe i just need to listen to it a couple more times.

I think you're gonna get lots of Spoon recommendations here, Lanney! I'll add The Kills -- one of my favs of the whole year! If you like the vibe of "Cat Claw" & "Fried My Little Brains" then it's for you.
and thanks for reminding me that the BRMC cd will be out soon (from the other thread)!

quebec is worth every penny, i couldn't be more pleased. there are maybe 2 tracks that are just "okay", the rest is pure fun.
what about ted leo and the pharmacists? i've already decided that hearts of oak will most likely be my next purchase, but i've noticed a couple of other albums, are they any good?

JOet loves the natural history!
he turned me on to them and Now
I love them too!
Hard to describe the sound , very melodic, tight changes
can be laid back or rocking.
heres a link to their site
http://www.thenaturalhistory.com/
you can click on music and listen to some tracks

The Decemberists album is good, kinda reminds me of older they might be giants without the silliness.

Hearts of Oak is definitely worth it!
Anyone have an opinion about Over-the-Rhine Ohio or the Junior/Senior CD? I'm thinking about getting those ones.

The Ted Leo/Pharmacists CD is totally worth it. That is, if you can find it, of course. (it took me trying about 5 different places...I'm still not up on the internet buying, so I had to go store to store).
Here's an older one....how about yo la tengo - i can feel the heart beating as one? I have summer sun and and then nothing turned itself inside out, but I'm looking for more uptempo stuff from them. is this a good choice?

i haven't heard much yo la tengo beyond their airplay, but i do know that their bass player has a side project called dump. they have a new(ish?) record out, and their first record is all prince covers, called that skinny motherfucker with the high voice. i stumbled upon this one, and it's a gem.

Yes.
I don't know about uptempo -- we're talking about yo la tengo after all -- but I have found that most people find I Can Feel The Heart Beating As One to be the most 'approachable' YLT album.

Regarding Yo La Tengo's "I Can Feel the Heart Beating as One": it's what you want. Since you only have the latest two albums, I think you'll enjoy hearing them let out some poppin' rockers and rockin' poppers on this one. There's also some organ droners and head nodders -- and oh-so-much-more. It makes for a more rounded-out listen than "Summer Sun," which I can barely stay awake for (and I'm a fan). If you like this one, I also recommend "Painful" and "Electr-O-Pura" with no hesitation.

Buy Manitoba. Just do it. The newest one.
As for Spoon, their albums ranked in degrees of awesomeness starting with the best:
A Series of Sneaks
Girls Can Tell
Kill the Moonlight
Telephono
That Decemberists album is good but not breathtaking, so I can't recommend it over the Kills, whom I haven't heard yet.
Ween? No...

I'm not going to recommend Spoon, but only because everyone else has already. =)
The Ted Leo album is good, I'd definitely recommend it.
The Decemberists are becoming one of my favorite bands. The "older They Might Be Giants without the silliness" is a great description. However, the lyrics are a bit much at times. The guy has a degree in creative writing, and goes a bit overboard with it sometimes.
The Kills, however, do nothing for me. One of the worst purchases I've made all year. The songs are bland at best.

spoon -all the way around.
ted leo - ok didn't listen to it much.
decemberists - growing on me.
the kills - blah..
YLT - start with heart. if you like 90's psycho guitar go with the earlier stuff.
constantines - shine a light. just heard this yesterday and was blown away.
natural history - good stuff. kinda goes well with we ragazzi, and the new dance rock/weird vocalist a la hot hot heat style.
fruit bats - good.
junior/senior - whatever.. for me, it's at minute 9 and counting..
ween is always fun.

Anyone know anything about the new Muse cd, Absolution?
SteelTown Boy
26 Sep 2003, 12:30 PM
Absolution will be out as an import on the 30th.i'm buying the single for "Time is Running Out",no word on what US label will pick that up,i'm guessing that since some wag at Maverick wanted Muse to sound like Limp Bizkit, they just said F off.
there is some rumblings that Muse could have a US deal soon.

They need to get a US deal really really bad. I had to buy Origin of Symmettry for like $35 up at CD world. I mean, it was worth it, but I don't want to have to do it again.
