O.K., I don't know much or care much about computers. Hell, I can't even figure out how to post an image on these boards. But a friend had given me an old computer for free. I used it for writing reports and such. Well, now it's taken a shit.

A guy I work with said it's not worth the repairs, he said I'm better off buying a new one. I've heard you can get a computer (no monitor, speakers, printers or anything) for about $400. I might get a scanner and printer if they're not an arm and a leg. But really, just checking e-mails and screwing aroundlike this are my only needs. I don't have a home phone (i go cell only) and have heard you don't have to have a home line to get Internet service. Do I need a home phone line (yes, I have jacks) to get this? And what are some good deals? I've heard Cincy Bell for about $30 a month.

Open for all suggestions...

Thanks,

do you have cable? I have cable internet.

even with rebuilding after last summer's heat fried my processor, in the 4 or so years I have had my home built computer (no printer or scanner...but I do have a monitor and a mic/headset) I've put maybe 400 bucks into it. and I have 128 megs of something (memory?) and a nice compaq monitor, speakers with a boom thingy, a nice offic keyboard and a ge mouse, a cd burner :) ooohh and after this past saturday a digital camera and computer dock...so ok 445 bucks.

Did your freind tell you what exactly is wrong with your computer? I have a co-worker and his computer 'took a shit'. I looked at it and all it needs is a new hard drive, which will cost him 60 bucks....and a six-pack for me to fix it for him. Sure, you can go out and spend a few hundred to get a brand new one, and if you have money to burn, you might as well. But if all you're doing is using it as a word processor, it's probably not worth it to spend that much money.

As for your Internet connection needs, I don't think you absolutely have to have a land line, but it would probably be cheaper if you did. I know that they sell laptops that can connect to the Internet wirelessly, but the hardware is probably expensive, plus your cell phone bill will take a hit from all those extra minutes. That's something you'll just have to investigate.
