8/20/03 - I saw DUCK DODGERS!
I had a personal sneak preview of the new DUCK DODGERS series yesterday, courtesy of Paul Dini, Spike Brandt, Tony Cervone and Tom Minton over at Warner Bros. Animation.
I can stop holding my breath and can breath freely again - They done good, very good.
The Warner Bros. Looney Tunes characters are beloved, and original Chuck Jones DUCK DODGERS cartoon is a classic. Luckily in the hands of the above, this half hour TV spin-off (comprised of two 11 minute shorts) preserves everything we love about the Ducky/Pig/Martian personalities (and relationships), expands their universe, and creates hilarious new senarios for them to play in.
One of my favorite things about the show is the way they incorporate classic villians into their space age counterparts (such as Yosemite Sam as a Klingon warlord type and Count Bloodcount as a space vampire).
One stand-out cartoon I saw, "K-9 Caddy", was a delightful homage to a certain cartoon classic (with a similiar title) from another golden age studio (HINT: watch out for this one).
There are so many good things on this show: I love the cool, retro-60s, Tom Jones opening title sequence; The vocal characterizations by Joe Alasky (as Daffy) and Bob Bergen (as Porky) are right on; The cg space ships and special effects are dazzling; and Spike & Tony's layouts and poses are tight and funny.
Don't miss DUCK DODGERS - it airs on Cartoon Network each Saturday at 11:30am and each Sunday night at 8:00pm.
