Lightning Bolt – Wonderful Rainbow

Lightning Bolt. They are two guys from Providence, Rhode Island. One dude plays bass and the other plays drums. They don’t like to wash. So they stink. The bass player just stands there while playing these deafening chords while the drummer spastically beats at his drum set with a mask over his head holding his microphone in place.

There are some vocals in a few of the songs but they are limited and not understandable, due to the drummer singing through a modified phone microphone. Wonderful Rainbow is their latest album. Previous to this is the excellent Ride The Skies. The difference between the two is: Wonderful Rainbow has a little more melody than Ride the Skies.

So what can I say about this music? It is not for everybody. It is abrasive. It is fast. It is heavy. It is mostly instrumental. It is mostly noise. It is NOT heavy metal. It is noise-rock. There are no sing-a-long choruses. There really is no sing-a-long anything. It begs to be played loud. In fact, I only enjoy it when I’m alone and can turn it up as loud as I want. It is repetitious. Many times for a couple of minutes you will listen to the same few notes/chords being played over and over without much changing. This is a good thing because the notes are deep and they plow, push and they suck you in. Hypnotizing. There is some starting and stopping. Drums and bass kick into a melody…then stop…repeat…repeat. Then the meat of the song kicks in with a blast.

The sounds you will hear are mostly deep rough repeating bass chords/notes with spastically beaten drums along for the ride. Many of the songs have the bass playing high notes. Which is kind of strange, because it is a bass, but sounds great.

It will likely take a few listens before your head adjusts to what it is hearing, but after that your head should make the proper modifications for Lightning Bolt comprehension to take place. Good luck and I hope you enjoy Lightning Bolt as much as I do.

A while back, we (hilltop distillery) had played a show & someone asked me afterwards if i had ever heard Lightning Bolt. at that time i hadn't. he stressed that i had to check them out & that we had LB moments in our music. so i had to hear what this guy was freaking out about.

I must say, they are an incredible band. seriously talented.
definitely not for everyone, but it's just brilliant.
you're right, it's not metal. (yet there are metal moments, which to me, is a good thing) it's more noise and just notes flying everywhere. it's total organized-chaos. i'm a huge fan of repetition. i love the parts of "Skies" that sound like the cd's skipping. just the same note & hit over & over for like a minute, & then an abrupt change. but at the same time, they have beautiful moments. it's not always pounding in your head.
I haven't heard Wonderful Rainbow yet, only Ride The Skies.
I'll have to pick it up.
long live tapping solos!!!

Joe T,

Lightning Bolt has a DVD out called "The Power of Salad", which is just a cameraman filming them while on tour. You get to see how the bass player makes all those different sounds. And of course you get to see the manic drumming. It is interesting to watch.

I wanted to check out your band so I went to the Hilltop Distillery website, at commonwealthaudio.com, and tried to download some mp3's but couldnt link to the mp3 page. It seems as though the link to the mp3 page just redirects me back to the news page. Anyway, thought I would let you know.

hey matt, yeah the mp3 link on the hilltop page is f'd. (our site needs another makeover) but on the State Bird records page, if you click on the album cover, it will take you to our mp3.com page or if you go to the "purchase the album link" you can hear some diff. mp3's on the cd baby site.

but, thanks for the info. i'm gonna have to find that Lightning Bolt DVD, it sounds great!!!

The concert info is here:

Looks like the closest they are coming is to cleveland, pittsburg, or chicago.

Definitely worth the money.

They dont play on stage. Instead they are down in the pit with everybody else all arond them. A small drum set and a stack of amps and thats it.

I highly recommend ear protection. I have heard stories about people feeling sick from how loud they play. Or that the sound has forced them to take a dump.

hey fork, that's another reason why people told me to check out Lightning Bolt, because we always play on the floor at bigger venues ourselves. we hardly ever go through a PA. that's another reason why i have to see them. i've been told that their shows are amazing.

it's funny, because in some of the live pics of LB you can see people holding their ears in pain, but still enjoying the show.
