This doesn't surprise me, really.
If you want Netscape without all the bloated add-ons, check out Mozilla. It's a damn fine browser.

unfortunately the demise of netscape will probably ultimately mean mozilla will go down as well since it is based off the open source of netscape.

uh-- Matt. You know I try to support open-code stuff as much as possible and I'll agree that Mozilla is a fairly solid program with supporting both for moral reasons and for the performance.
But not bloated?!? It's got an e-mail client, web editor, anti-popup software, skins support, an IRC client, and Instant Messaging client, among other things-- all of which are mediocre at best.

RVA (and others who seek an unbloated web browser)--have you checked out Firebird?

It's an attempt to get the bloat out of Mozilla.
I have it, but haven't played around with it too much.

I haven't downloaded Firebird yet, but I've kinda been keeping an eye on it. I think it's still a little too buggy for me to try it now. When they get to a little farther down the development path-- 1.0 maybe-- I'll probably give it a whirl.

While Netscape will probably be going away, as it should, Mozilla is definitely here to stay. Mozilla is not based on the open source of Netscape, it IS the open source base of Netscape and several other projects (Galeon, K-Meleon, Camino). And yes, Mozilla is just as bloated as Netscape, it just doesn't come without all of the crap and assorted junk that AOL tacks on to it for a Netscape release. In my opinion, it's the best browser out there with possibly the exception of Safari. The mail client is pretty damn good, too, escpecially for managing multiple IMAP accounts.
Mozilla developers are well aware of the project's bloat and as such will be splitting the project into separate browser and mail clients, Firebird and Thunderbird respectively.
Mozilla is simply too important to the free software community to let slip away. Even if AOL yanks all funding for it, I think it will still progress albeit at a slower pace. It's cross platform, free, has tabbed browsing and native pop-up blocking, and it kicks ass! What's not to love?

I've been using Mozilla Firebird for several weeks now, and I really like it. The loads are much faster, the web-page viewing space is larger, and I dig the tab-browsing capability, which makes simultaneous web page browsing a lot easeir.
For some reason, it makes the posting reply box on the 97x boards only 1/2 as wide as it is in IE, though. Not sure why that is or if I can change it, but it's somewhat annoying.
