by the way Billy Corgan does the soundtrack too and it is amazing...there is an acoustic cover of "number of the beast" by Iron Maiden that is very good....

I'm a fan of Jonas Akerland's videos, so naturally I'm interested in seeing this movie, although I fear that that kind of speed effects editing is going to make it into the mainstream. I can accept it in a movie about amphetamines, but that's about it. Also the casting annoys me. Why did he have to tap into the teeny bop set? So he can lure teenagers into thinking meth looks wacky and cool? He should've cast that ex-porn star he worked with on that Metallica video, Ginger Lynn.

In addition to doing the soundtrack, I've noticed that Billy Corgan is actually IN a small part in the movie... Blink and you'll miss him!!I'll give you a hint.. He is there to save that dude's balls!!
I watched this last night.. Great flick!!! All Star cast...Loved Deborah Harry as the jaded neighbor!!! Have never been a big Britney Murphy fan, but really liked her in this movie..

I just rented it last night and I really couldn't tell if it was really stupid or great...I might have to watch it again. I thought the way it was filmed was cool, but there was way to much Brittany Murphy...does anyone know what happened to her?? I watched Clueless and Freeway recently and she was cute and curvy. Now she looks anorexic.

Went to rent this over the weekend, but the Movie Gallery in Oxford only carries the edited version. Um, no thanks.
I need to rejoin Netflix...

Okay, so I watched it last night, and it might've been the edited version. Randomly bleeped words and blurred out nudity. I dunno.
Anywho, yeah...I'm not sure about this one. It was okay, but I might have to try it again before I decide it's good.

Yeah, that would be the edited version.
The film was released unrated in the theaters because it was given an NC-17. Instead of editing it, they put it out unrated because it was such a small release. (For a multitude of reasons, nobody will bother with an actual NC-17 these days).
Of course, Blockbuster and Hollywood Video will not carry NC-17 or unrated titles as a general rule, so the companies will always release a sanitized version for them.
In the case of Spun, Jonas Akerlund was against the edits, so the dvd of the R-rated cut doesn't feature ANY of the special features that are on the unrated dvd.
I don't think I will want to buy this title, but I'm really pissed that I can't find anybody around here that stocks this one to rent in its original form. Or "Irreversible" for that matter...
I need to go back to Netflix, but I just wasn't having enough time to watch the movies so I was spending $20 for the dvd's to sit on top of my tv. :-D
What bothers me the most is that these chains never let their customers know that they are watching an edited version. SURE Blockbuster carries films like "The Piano Teacher", "Audition", and "Spun"...but they are severely cut from the original versions.
There is NO indication that the movies are edited and most people don't know.
All edited films should be like the R-rated version of REQUIEM FOR A DREAM. The director also pulled all special features off the dvd for the edited version AND the words "edited version" plop down in big red letters during the opening credits.

count me in that category. i wondered why there were so many blurred scenes. duh.
thanks for the info on that, makes a lot more sense to me now. otherwise, i liked this movie. (but brittany murphy doesn't bother me so much, so i guess that helped.)

not to be contrary, but i rented the uncensored Spun this evening from my local Blockbuster. it was in the 'singular sensation' (or whatever the hell they call the section with the fun movies) section of course, but is definitely not the edited version.
i also don't really know about the movie. i'm not much of a fan of the 'lives of strung out addicts' films, they're all too similar. in a way it's interesting to watch the self destruction and grossness of it all but i don't really see the point. all the characters are hopeless and lost.
but i did like ending the film with everyone sleeping. that was nice. the only "nice" part of the whole movie, for sure.

Brittany Murphy is so anorexic I think from all the coke she does. And whenever I see a picture of her, I just picture her writhing around in Don't Say A Word saying "I'lllll never tellll" God that is so annoying. When she hosted SNL, I thought for sure she was going to O.D.

That is interesting. If I understand correctly, the actual stores that are run by the company follow this policy with few exceptions. Franchise stores (many of whom were previously other chain or indie shops) may be able to call the shots a little bit more.
That pisses me off even more that this stupid Movie Gallery in Oxford had it edited if a damn BLOCKBUSTER carried the director's cut!

Yeah, I thought this movie was alright....I heard from some friends that it was awesome...I definitely wouldn't call it awesome.
I liked some of the visual effects. The digital shots and editing did make a cool effect for the common addict. But I did think that the animation shots were a little over the top. And it got to the point where instead of progressing with a plot, they would just do another bump.
I remember thinking to myself...this has gotta quit sometime...and then I'd yell at Jason Schwartzmann vicariously through the TV, "GO TO SLEEP....STOP IT"
I just thought the plot could have been a hell of a lot better. I read another post where someone said put it like this:
After seeing Pulp Fiction, the movie Thursday was boring.
After seeing Fight Club, the movie Identity was boring.
After seeing Requiem for a Dream, the movie Spun sucked.
I pretty much agree. It didn't suck....but no plot. 2 out of 5
