WOXY is great for finding local concert info, but in the next couple of months, we're planning on going to Chicago, maybe Pittsburgh. Is there some cool radio station in one of those towns (not NEARLY as cool as WOXY, of course) that lists such things?
Steeltownboy, any advice there?

Go to www.pollstar.com and you can do a search for shows by city...see? (http://www.pollstar.com/tour/searchall.pl?Content=C-IL_Chicago&Date_From=Today&Date_To=9%2F1%2F2003&By=City&PSKey=Y&StartSearch.x=11&StartSearch.y=17)

For Chicago, screw the radio stations. go to http://www.chireader.com
and go under music and then under early warnings. That will give you an alphabetical list of bands coming to town with dates and links to ticketmaster or ticketweb for tix. That will also have links to the different clubs.

although pollstar is comprehensive, they don't have much in the way of less-promoted shows (but oddly have some local music listings thrown into the mix sometimes). i find that going to some of the label or venue websites is a great way to find the good, reliable shows. if chicago, try the southern records website, they have a database of all southern-distributed bands, which covers a huge portion of the indie world, and lots in chicago. (www.southern.com) or a tried and true practice of just going to ticketweb.com website and typing in the city or the good venue(s) in the town you are going to. or ticketmaster, if you're up for it.
in chicago, try your luck at shuba's tavern. that's the only one i've been to there, and it was the coolest.

In addition to the other fine suggestions, your best bets are:
www.schubas.com
www.abbeypub.com
www.doubledoor.com
www.newcity.com is an alternative to the Chicago Reader.
www.wxrt.com is the reasonably cool station there
I believe there's a Yahoo group for Chicago music, but I can't remember the name. You can probably find it by searching.
Eat at Reza's is you dig Middle Eastern food. For navigating and finding what clubs/stores/etc are near the L stops. check out the Virtual El at www.centerstage.net.
Have fun,

On your way to Pittsburgh, Columbus' CD 101 is good
