Who was the best "guest host"? What is the funniest/best skit?
I liked when The Rock and Alec Baldwin hosted. You can't get enough sweaty balls.
I think my favorite skit(s) are Chippendale dancers tryouts with Chris Farley and Patrick Swayze or hottub lifeguard with Jim Carrey.

Sarcastic Clapping Family was always good. Basically, anytime Alec Baldwin hosted was good but I preferred the earlier times - around about 90 - I think he was on with the B-52's once - that was my favorite show.
In the Schwetty balls vein, there's always the recent Colonel Angus sketch.....

There was one Christopher Walken sketch that's kinda faded from my memory...but it is hilarious. Tim Meadows is a Census counter and he knocks on CW's door and asks all these questions like...
"Are you married"
"yes...well...to a tiger."
I love him the best as a guest host in the last couple years. No doubt.

A recent classic was when Jamie Foxx hosted with Blink 182... there was one skit when Will Ferrell was wondering if he was still Jamie's "bitch". It was a prison setting, obviously.
Jamie: You always gon' be my bitch... ain't nobody gonna take that away......till I kill yo' ass.
That is quality television. :p
I also enjoyed Tom Green's hosting, doesn't he have a NEW show on MTV coming out?

I always liked when Tom Hanks hosted. My favorites were Mr. Short Term Memory, and Sabra Price is Right.
-No no no, I said it's LIKE Sony guts.
-No, I told you it's child's bank. Look, when did you drop it?
-Satellite dish from Pinnacle, is good!
-Will it help me get channels?
-It won't hurt you getting channels.
Classic.

My favorite is Christopher Walken as "The Contential". Please, have some Sham-pag-nyah.
DSM mentioned it already, but Nick Burns makes me relive memories of the IT guys at P&G ie:
Me: "Hello, my mouse is not working for some reason. It is plugged in though."
IT Dork: "Did you bother to turn your computer on?"
Me: "Well, yeah, I..." "
ITDork: "Just forget it, you'll never figure it out. I guess I'll just have to come up."
Oops, better stop before I get too worked up.

Alec Baldwin, Tom Hanks, Chris Walken, and Jerry Seinfeld were some of the best. One of my favorites was Baldwin playing a doctor who mispronounced all of the medical terminology.

A few favorites:
Every Celebrity Jeapardy. Will Ferrell is a genius.
The Continental. Christopher Walken is far funnier than most people give him credit for.
When Matt Damon tried to pick up Mango also left me in stitches.
I also love the commercials.
My favorite thing about SNL is the potential for referencing it. I was at a tailgate party two years ago (Bears v. Bengals) and we were standing around this car, but we couldn't set our drinks down on the car roof because they were sliding off. Someone suggested that if we had an Adobe, our problems would be solved. I nearly wet myself.

I think Swill is my favorite commercial ever, when they poured out that bottle and there was a pop tab in there, classic. The Adobe was good too, except it left that big stain on your ass.

In honor of tonight's old episode reference, I thought I'd bump this very old thread.
On tonight's SNL, Alec Baldwin made a trip to the Platinum suite, where he encountered Steve Martin. For those of you who have watched for many years, this was the same suite that Tom Hanks visited in 1990 when he joined the Five-Timer Club. This was Alec's 13th time hosting, which he initial thought tied Steve's record, but Steve has apparently hosted 14 times, so he still holds record.
In the original skill, Elliott Gould and Paul Simon were also hanging out in the club. Conan O'Brien, an SNL writer at the time, was the doorman. Tonight's version of the skit had Martin Short as the waiter, and instead of Paul Simon, it was Paul McCartney.
I had a good laugh, but mostly in memory of the skit from 16 years ago, and Alec's reference to Sweaty Balls. Also because these were the guys who made SNL funny.
It was also pretty funny when the real Tony Bennett showed up as Anthony Benedetto (his birth name) on the Tony Bennett show, with Alec doing a great Tony Bennett impersonation.
Lorne was pulling in all his favors tonight, I think. (Tina and Tracey's appearance during the monologue was a given.) Although Tony does have a network special in a week and a half.

I think overall people are a little too harsh on judging SNL.
Yes it would be nice to have every show be "fall on the floor/laughing so hard" funny ... but its gotta be rough to come up with a full show of comedy week after week. Sometimes i watch it and think "this show isn't good tonite", but always find something about it that made it worthwhile to tune in.

I only watched the first few sketches, but it just didn't seem too promising so I read a book instead. The Prince Show had some potential, but ended up being only amusing at best. If you had told me beforehand that Fred Armisen could impersonate Prince, I wouldn't have believed it, but he did a pretty good job (more so when singing and general movements than when he spoke).

He backed out due to Hurricane Ike. Probably felt it might be seen to be in bad taste yukking it up while Texas is under water. I suspect it was a good decision.

The opening sketch was hysterical. Tina Fey as Palin was just as amazing as I had hoped. She had the accent down to perfection.
Michael Phelps was as bad of a host as I had imagined he would be. He tripped over his lines constantly and frequently looked at though he was just staring off at the cue cards/teleprompter because he couldn't remember what to say. I thought that at the very least we'd just get to see him walk around in a speedo, but they didn't even really go for that except for a fleeting photo!
The only skit in the entire show that made me laugh was one of the dumbest. For whatever reason, the waiter at the Uno's pizzeria (who is a new cast member) made me laugh my ass off.

I had the same reaction. I think it was the fact that he was dawning one of those shirts with the enormous anime character on it. But I agree, the facial expressions of Phelps throughout the show were kind of embarassing.
The real funniest part of the show though was obviously Lil Wayne attempting that guitar solo during his final performance. :p

The Space Olympics short was terrible. Probably the worst thing on the show other than Lil Wayne. The quizbowl sketch was amusing, but could have been much better. The same with the T-Mobile commercial. I thought it was funny, but it seemed kind of sloppy. Then again, that could have been Phelps tripping on his lines.

I thought the Lawrence Welk skit was hilarious. Anne H. does a great Mary Poppins... that one could have been much, much finnier if they messed around with the comedic timing a bit more.
And the chemistry between Myers and Poehler on W.U. is getting better and better every week. I loved the deadpan stares into the camera from both of them after the Lesbos joke. They wouldn't have "poked fun at themselves" (i.e. "yes, i know... we really just said that") like that ~10 years ago. The writing was much more arrogant a few years ago.

As for the show, I just watched some clips online because I missed it on Sat. I laughed a good bit at most of them. It seems (surprisingly) like it was a pretty strong show and that AH did a pretty great job. I didn't see WU however.
One thing I should note is that most of these skits were pretty short. I think that makes it easier to come up with quick and goofy ideas, hit it quick and then move on. In the past few years a lot of the skits took too long to develop and generally wouldn't develop. Or maybe they have just been so bad that they feel so long.

over the years SNL does the man on man kiss periodically and it is still kind of funny but not as shocking as it once was. OTOH that obsessive, fast repeat kissing between father and son was way more hilariously weird than the sloppy gross out kiss.

The major problem is that they have to write for a 90 minute show. Yeah, there are two musical guest performances and Weekend Update, but it's hard enough to write a 30 minute sitcom. At the very least, they need to cut it down to 60 minutes. Many skits drag on too long.

It's hardly an excuse considering the format has been that way for umpteen years. If they cut it down to 60 mins, I think it would be harder for them to filter what's funny to them vs. what's funny to their viewing audience.
On another note, I thought the political coverage was a little overconfident... and did anyone else notice the first two spoofs were both NBC shows? I thought that was odd.
LOL moments - The BCS song when he was trying to get away with the f-word (I usually can't stand those - but that was the only funny part of it - "Can we switch to HBO?" :) ), the digital short (which could have been MONUMENTAL with NPH + Lonely Planet), Broadway sketch, Whopper sketch at the end.

I thought that Rosario did a great job with what she was given. She wasn't stiff and had a lot of personality when she was on screen. But, the writing just wasn't there and nearly everything fell so flat. Same thing with the NPH show. Boo.
Ditto. I liked seeing the band, though. That was the longest credits sequence I've ever seen.
Two hosts with great potential, but that is when the writing tends to be crappy. One exception this season was Anne Hathaway.

Holy Moses!
I finally got around to watching the Alec Baldwin/Jones Brothers episode from a few weeks ago... Aside from being busier than normal, I think I put off watching it because I wanted to spare myself the heartbreak and disappointment I've experienced in more recent weeks...
However... I thought that just about every bit was SPOT ON. How the hell does that happen?! Maybe Akyroyd's presence knocked some sense into them... or they brought in the 30 Rock writers.
Seth on Salma Hayek: "In other news... 'Waaah! Waaaah! Waaaah!'"
And then Angelina Jolie shows up... brilliant. Sooooo disappointed I put off watching this episode. Let's hope the magic sticks around through these damn repeats.

Didn't watch last night's ep (yet), but I can't believe how many times they've shown the Chewable Pampers commercial this year - I think it was in each of the previous 3 or 4 episodes... I thought it was pretty funny the first time, but I don't remember them even showing Lazy Sunday or Dick In A Box more than once. They really must be running low on material.

I was underwhelmed by the Like a Boss video, but it's also one of my least favorites from the album. At the rate their going it looks like they might make a video for every song! I hope the next one is the song w/ Norah Jones about the big ole bag of trash and Chex Mix. Or the one about the old folks gettin down at the nursing home (you gotta know your limits with a boom box).

I thought it was odd that they played Maps for their second song. I wouldn't have thought that they would play something that wasn't on the new album. If it had to be from Fever To Tell, they should have done something more awesome like Y-Control. I guess they'll always be known as that Maps band, and playing it on SNL sure didn't help.

For as much "stage presence" as Karen O. may like to think she has, her gestures during songs are disappointingly literal. You don't have to tug your jacket every time you say "leather." We get it.
Is she always like that, or only when her band is on national broadcast TV?

I don't know if the writers bring their A-game when hosts like Timberlake show up or what, but it was an effing solid episode. Start to finish.
Except it's weird when musical acts like Ciara are on, with backup dancers and all. It seems out of place, like bringing them to a nursing home and suggestively dancing. And Ciara's dancers all seemed older, and kinda clueless. Maybe that's just the un-magic of high def TV.
shivvy
10 May 2009, 10:36 AM
Nope, Ciara was awful and that's too bad. When she surfaced back in 2004, that girl was hot. "Goodies" was the jam and the she started turning up on Missy Elliott tracks and I loved her. This new record has been pushed back like 5 times now and apparently it is out soon, but all the advance troubles were spelled out in those two songs last night, which were horrible.
But yeah, the show was pretty hysterical start to finish, even with retread skits from his previous visits. The guy is funny and something tells me it's easier to write funny stuff FOR him as opposed to some of the people who have hosted this year. Rosario Dawson, I'm looking at you.

I think it's probably just a lot of fun to write for JT, like shivvy said. Watching the show last night, I was amazed at the amount of dialogue he seemed to have memorized. Add the songs and all that blocking in to the mix and you just HAVE to appreciate what this guy brings to the show. I think there were only one or two times when he seemed to check a cue card. He really takes on anything that is thrown at him and knocks it out of the park. AMAZING.
JAAAAAAAAAAM!

JT spent three years on the Mickey Mouse Club in the 90's, so silly skits are just as easy to him as singing and dancing. I definitely think he could devote more time to acting (as long as it doesn't include more choices like "The Love Guru").

they should just let him perform each time he hosts as well, because he brings it in that department also. as for the skits, i still enjoyed the mascot guy and the berry gibb talk show but they need to take those to the next level (like they did with the dick in a box guys).

Apparently the writers cashed out all of their funny on JT's week. Only the Jeopardy skit was barely funny and it was mostly because of Darrell Hammond and Norm's appearance. I guess that feud with Lorne is under the bridge. Nice to see lots of folks coming through for the finale though.

The only great moment on the show last night was when one of the new cast members actually let the "f bomb" drop during the "Biker Chick Chat" sketch - her quick realization of what she did was classic, though I give them all props for carrying on and pretending it didn't happen.
And as for U2's sound - was Adam Clayton's bass even plugged in? Hard to say.

Wow, I thought just the opposite. I really didn't laugh but a few times. Sure, the Vagisil section of the bowling tournament was funny, but everything else was just bad. The shy Ronnie thing didn't do anything for me at all. The opening skit with Obama just seemed to go on forever. I thought that was the worst episode since the season opener, which was just horrible.

I think the director was thrown off by the delayed start and didn't realize that they were running out of time until the last minute, so they had to cut it off.
They fixed it for the online version, but it ends at the same place: http://www.nbc.com/saturday-night-live/video/clips/barkleys-bank/1191615/
There was another screw earlier this season in the Taylor Swift show, where Amy Poehler was supposed to introduce Swift's second musical number, but the director had the wrong camera on and Amy was nowhere to be seen. You could hear her yelling "Taylor Swift, everyone!" from the other side of the stage.
I thought it was OK. Even though he had to use the cue cards, he showed enthusiasm.
