Read through this thread (http://msg.woxy.com/showthread.php?s=&threadid=7783) and decide for yourself. My personal opinion...ME is worse than Win95. Take it from me, I do this stuff for a living.

Are you serious? In my book, there is NOTHING worse than Windows ME.

Indeed. Let's at least make this fair. How about: "Win ME vs. MS-DOS 3.1" or "Win ME vs. Contiki OS"?

DOS is way better than ME.

Anywhere you want, but don't bring it back all dirty and poopy smelling.

Hey, guess what I found out....ME is better than the abacus!

ok...um why is ME so hated, I find it to better than XP, I suppose this is because I am more familiar with the layout.

Or maybe it's just because you don't know any better.

ME has crappy memory allocation if one app crashes, the system goes down. They could not fix 95/98 so they called it ME. Just a bloated 98. ALL tech people I know laugh when ME is even mentioned.

As far as the "layout" issues with XP. I hear this all the time. You can turn that off if you want...Right click your taskbar>properties>start menu tab>select "classic start menu". They have also moved more things in the System Properties and the Network Settings are different, but I think they make more sense now. Been using Microsoft since the MS-DOS days and XP is hands down the best OS yet for Microsoft.

:) Funny you should mention that....it just happened to me about an hour ago....

I think I'll give XP a try.

This poll is like comparing desserts... would you like dirt, or a big bowl of chocolate ice cream with whipped cream, sprinkles, and a cherry on top??

I skipped ME completely when that pile o'crap came out. Since it's just like what beelzebob said - "Just a bloated 98" - I completely agree.

Make sure you have enough under the hood to run XP, I wouldn't run it on any thing less that a 1.5Ghz processor with 256k RAM. If you don't have enought RAM, buy some, it's cheap.

yeah, the first thing i did when i got a new pc was change the layout of XP. i felt like a small child using that bubbly layout.
the only problem or qualm that i've ever had with XP is simply that the game Black & White is no compatible. i'm going to have to take it to my mum's house and play it on her old school pc.

Are you sure, because it runs on my XP box with the newest patch from the game company. If you still long for good ole Windows 98, you can always set your system up as a dual boot machine, so that it asks you on startup whether you'd like 98 or XP to run as your OS. It's a bit complicated to do, but there's lots of information on the Internet on how to do it.

oh DSM, i'm not THAT computer savvy, by far.
it doesn't list XP on the requirements for the game. i knew this when i bought it but it was only like 10 bucks so i got it anyway. it installed fine and everything but whenever i tried to actually start the game by double clicking the icon or pulling up the drive that the disc was in the screen would appear, i would click Play, then nuthin'.

That sounds like a video issue. You should check the game's website and get the newest patch and make sure your video driver is current also. It should run.

I've got an XP question. Our company recently switched to XP Professional and it seems to work alright except for one oddity. When I print a document the print-icon no longer shows up at the bottom of the screen. It used to--even after we made the switch to XP--until about two weeks ago. I left Friday with it appearing just like it always did... and when I came into work on Monday it no longer appeared. I have done NOTHING to make it go away.

I went to the taskbar properties and tried a few things, including "resetting to default" and none of the things I tried work.

I guess it's not really _that_ big a deal but we have a LOT of people printing to the same printer and it was nice for me to be able to open it with a simple click and look at the status of my print job in the queue. As it stands now, I have to do a couple extra steps to find out the status. I mentioned this to our IT guru and he said the same thing has been happening to a lot of employees, and he hasn't been able to find an answer as to why. Anyone have a clue about this???

So it's printing and everything is working, you just can't see the icon in the system tray?

What might be happening is that Windows XP is hiding you printer icon. This is a new feature in XP that is sometimes useful, sometimes not. You know how after awhile you end up with 20,000 little icons in your system tray in Windows? Well, XP tries to solve that problem by hiding the icons it thinks you aren't using.

Give this a shot:

Click on the button on the left of your system tray. It's a < with a circle around it. See if the icon shows. If not, try printing something and see if the icon appears during the print process.

Alternatively, go to start-->settings-->Taskbar and Start Menu and uncheck "hide inactive icons"

Thanks RVA, but I've already tried that. I even tried making my printer an "always active" icon and it STILL doesn't work. Everything prints just fine, it's just that I no longer have the icon in the system tray when I have a document in the queue.

When there are 20 items in the queue it's nice to click on the printer icon and see how many more there are before mine, but as it stands I have to physically open the printer menu to view it. It's only a few extra steps but it was really nice to see it with one click. Plus it just annoys me that it disappeared without a trace.

Not sure how to fix your problem, a quick search of Google's Usenet Groups turned up nothing, BUT I can offer a workaround:

Make a shortcut to your printer and place it on your desktop, then you can double click it when you want to check the queue, or better yet add it to your QuickLaunch toolbar (next to the Start button, if you have it enabled) then it will always be handy.

Well this morning when I came into work and printed my first document I discovered that the printer icon has returned. I rang our IT guru to congratulate him on getting it sorted and he said that as much as he'd like to accept the kudos, he hadn't touched it. It came back all by itself. Weird.

Your IT guy must have missed the class where they teach you to take credit for things that magicaly fix themselves.
