there is a belief that the local scene is beset with pettiness and backbiting, that it excludes people and views of a certain variety, and generally, that the local scene is little more than a conservative clique.
immediately, upon the initial posting(s), the ugly head rears itself, the hydra of too kool/too hip/overbored. this is unfortunate, for what is being undertaken here is really not about playlists and endless don henley tunes. the implications go far past this.
if this is the age of information, then those who control the information in effect, control the discourse. when an increasing amount of the market share is controlled by a few media giants who are in bed with the sitting regime, is it not reasonable then to think that the information is going to be spun favorable toward that regime, or dissent will be repressed.
this is about the future of rock n roll/ this is about the future, period. and if we can't stop sniping at each other long enough to stop this progression toward an corporate fascism, then it's not gonna matter whose station sucks.
why was discussion closed on free the music. why was i not allowed to say my peace, since i am accused of advertising. so much for discourse.
matt sledge is correct about the recent fcc ruling: and i'm sure woxy is not planning on selling out any time soon. but as the number of independent stations fall by the wayside, surely you can see concern. if any one can remember what yer town was like before walmart, biggs, etc. and then what happened to the small merchants after, the principle is the same. we can't let that happen to the people's airwaves. we need the independents!
bt is rightfully angry, and has every right to shout about it! people of the generation born in the seventies or during reagan are discovering that the country isn't theirs any more, that their future is uncertain, that they are being locked out by forces beyond their control. in his case, its directed toward radio, and thus, has a bearing on us all.
bt is also correct in that this benefit is to protect woxy's right and need to exist, regardless of whether they play the "the right music" or not. but i do not feel that this pettiness is getting us anywhere other than right into the hands of the media juggernaut. cut out all this bullshit right now, and let's get some grass roots action going. this thing is for us all, and we could try to work together for a change.
