Tired of what's going on with the media? Appalled that 70% of our local major commercial radio stations are owned by 2 companies? Tired of paying through the nose to see a concert anywhere in this area, because 8 out of the 10 major venues in a 150 mile radius are owned by one conglomerate?

The Free the Music event at the Southgate House will be a fundraising and awareness event to fight Media Consolidation. ALL PROCEEDS benefit Take Back the Media (http://www.takebackthemedia.com) and The Future of Music Coalition (http://www.futureofmusic.org) .

The Bands: Wojo, Hilltop Distillery, The Decanters (Bloomington, IN), (the return of) Folk?, Shelly Miracle, Abiyah with Chestah T, NSPCREW, Morals Galore, Kohai, Misplaced, Fotos, Coltrane Motion, Starshaker and some Spoken Word from Aaron Kerley.

14 bands and admission is only $7.50. A very meaningful cause. . Please support us. Free The Music (http://www.free-the-music.org)

if you have any concern for music beyond the beer and lifestyle b.s. sold as alternative, stand up against corporate rock radio...they are silencing independent voices everyday, and don't think the CC is eyeballing your beloved independent station here, licking its chops, and waiting to pummell us into submission with whatever demographically correct pseudo rock they dredge up...

do your bit.

JonSheperd

The Wizard is correct.

Take Back the Media and the Future of Music Coalition are excellent information and activist organizations. The information they provide is very vital in helping people take a stand against media moguls who care nothing about the people.

Support this cause. While you're at it, write your congressman. Tell your Representative that he/she needs to fight for the people and against the FCC's short sighted legislation. This can be overturned, but these organizations need your support to mount that fight.

Too often people bemoan the situation, only to say "it won't work" when someone does offer a solution. Don't make this one of those times. You CAN do something and coming to this benefit is a great way to get started.

Be entertained. Support a great cause. Learn about the real media situation and use that to FIGHT.

This is not something to just bitch about on a board. It's real. It's anti-competitive and a serious danger to democracy.

if you think concert ticket prices are bad? just wait

tired of the same 40 or so songs being played? just wait

it is an outrage that more people aren't involved in something like this. i used to work in radio and i left cause i was tired of lying to the public about everything.

this is just the first step....we must take out all the dinosaurs in the biz, ditch all these stupid playlists and formats, get rid of the shock jokes who continue to make jokes about monica lewinsky and just generally aren't funny, get rid of these automation systems and get some real people working and paid.

if you think that 97.7 won't be a target....just wait...and they cower in the corner while we are out there trying to save their jobs....

$ talks....BS walks, thats a song by AC/DC...turn it on EBN they play it about 500 times a day.

it is a valiant cause, which is why morals galore is playing it.

Bands get asked to do benefits all the time, and as a rule, I think musicians are always sympathetic to the causes out there...but this one is a little different...

This one affects US.

97X, WAIF, we appreciate all that you all do for us and it's time we all stood up.

And you as listeners as well. I agree with Jon in that if we take a stand instead of just being apathetic...we might be able to change something. The only stations I listen to are 97X, WAIF, WOBO (killer old country and jazz out in Batavia) and REds games and UK basketball, but I know I'm in the minority. People listen to the ClearChannelShit aaaaaaaaalllllllllll the time. We're proud to be involved and I know it's going to be a huge night.

Now...enough with the diatribe....Let's f*ckin party!!!!
WOOOOOHOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO

A few things:

A couple of you made it sound like 97X was/is going to be on the selling block to the "big conglomerates".

Not so. We've had offers, and have turned them down each and every time.

Also, with the recent TV/Newspaper deregulation that was passed by the FCC on Monday, there was a measure passed along with it to further control what radio stations can own and what they can not in certain market areas. so don't be looking for CC or Infinity to expand anytime soon in the radio world, because it's not going to happen.

There's already some action happening in Washington to repeal the new rules the FCC made on Monday in regards to the TV/newspaper stuff.

Be sure to read up on it!

you are a douche....

if the money was right i think you would sell out in a minute...your station has went WAY downhill in the past few years or so,

you are just as bad in my opinion...you have the automated playlist, you overkill a lot of songs/singles and rarely ever stray off of the "greatest hits/single at the moment" type thing....even though its a "indie" band (and that word is soooo fucking retarded), you still overkill the shit.

its all who you know down here, and you know thats true. i know a few bands who weren't down with kissing your ass to get a song played...you hide behind your "independent/indie/local music" shtick*...when you would sell the bands and everything you stand for down the ohio river in a second....yeah you might have had opportunities...but the price wasn't right.

i have worked in the field...gave it up...too many liars and bullshit artists, tired of the people who didn't know shit about the listeners trying to tell me shit when they have no clue about real music fans

sit behind your desk...doing your blow...and having readymaid suck you off so they can get their latest genius work of art/piece of shit CD played

also, you are full of shit...who cares about other people trying to make a difference in Washington...people are trying to raise awareness down here. are you trying to help? no! quit lying to people on here...you know this is a big threat to america...to bands...its about FREEDOM!

"be sure to read up on it" gee, sledge (wow! how rocking of a last name you have...soo indie) thanks for the PSA! HEY KIDS! 97X SAYS ITS COOL TO READ A NEWSPAPER NOW!

radiohead reads newspapers...jack white does too...you want to be cool like them don't you.

suck my ass matt....keep floating on that cloud of yours...big deal you were in rolling stone magazine...do you really want to be mentioned in that publication? they are really up on the world too.

Wow, now you've really convinced me to go to your show.

While this probably isn't the thread to get into this, I just have to say one thing. As a listener for over ten years and a person who has helped to shape the playlist here over the past 2...anybody who thinks we "overplay" songs with a MAXIMUM of 25 spins a week is the one living in a cloud.

There isn't another commerical radio station in the country with a playlist or library as large and varied as ours.

Wow. I think this is quite possible the most ignorant post I have ever seen on a message board (well, at least the WOXY board).

I think if you ever sat down with Matt and talked to him for 5 minutes about what he devotes his entire life to, you would walk away with your ass between your legs.

You're fighting the wrong enemy, methinks.

This is exactly what I figured would happen here. D.C. did one of these events just two weeks ago and it was a huge success. Why? The community rallied behind it.

If you don't to come to the show, that's perfectly fine.

I'll just exit your board and concentrate on outets where people are receptive to an idea that people can change things. The rest of you can tear eachother to shreds. I've got bigger fish to fry.

Matt,

I appreciate that you are knowledgeable in this area, but I would invite you to go to the Government Printing Office website and read PL. 104-104, the Telecommunications Act of 1996. Notice that it's failed miserably to accomplish its goals, and actually created a gross inverse.

The radio/concert/media scene (nationwide) is in terrible shape and has been for years. This recent round of legislation does nothing to make a bad situation better. It merely allows the current conglomerates to operate at the status quo. Clear Channel is already considering their own suit against the FCC, according to the AP. They want more, more, more.

Can you honestly say that the state of radio and live entertainment has only gotten better since 1996? Are the recent FCC proposals are going to vastly improve the state of broadcast media? I say No. If you can prove me wrong, and back it up, I will cancel this event. Why would there be need for people to mobilize in such a utopia?

I would love to discuss this issue more with you Matt, over coffee. You bring your research and I'll show you what I've been reading up on since 1996.

Best Regards.

Jon - you are to be commended for your efforts in making the public more aware of what's happening today.

My original post was meant to say that some regulation actually happened with radio this past week, and NO ONE has said a peep about it. Heck, Infinity and CC are pissed about it, which makes me laugh. With regards to the TV/Newspaper issues that went down, I wasn't pleased. All I was saying was for people to read up on the facts, instead of spouting off second-hand information.

Unfortunately there's not a lot that can be done about Clear Channel, because they are in the back pocket of Dubya right now. Has CC destroyed radio? You bet. But they are also riding on massive, MASSIVE amounts of debt, and their ship will soon come in because karma can be a bitch.

JonSheperd
06 Jun 2003, 02:00 PM
Let's hope that ship sinks sooner than later, Matt. Their arrogance will certainly bring them to their end. Anything else we can do to speed that demise is worth its weight in gold.

With that, I stand down from my soapbox (well........until June 27th).

Brad...

Yeah, that 0.6 we got in the most recent trend has us selling out - compared to the 10.0 that WLW got.

Really.

I'd be concerned about ratings ... if we could actually get ratings in the first place. You try doing it on a 3k stick in an over-saturated radio market. 97X isn't about "ratings", never has been.

97X isn't just a radio station, it's a business. And what are businesses supposed to do?

Make money, last time I checked.

97X has a responsibility to be profitable, but not an obligation to be greedy.

By the way, the only reason I have been here for the past nine (9) years is because of one thing: THE MUSIC. If you don't believe me, so be it. If you're going to keep attacking me and making falsehoods, I will respond.
