View Full Version : Must See Movies

kickinitlive

there are so many movies out there that i haven't seen, like "butch cassidy and the sundance kid" and "existenz" and "blue velvet", etc.

what i am asking here is for you guys to put down some of your must see movies...i can't list everything i've seen, cause that'd be stupid. but think of some not to obvious ones...(in other words, leave the usual suspects and pulp fiction out of it).

have at it! ;)

OK. This is just off the top of my head, though.

Heavenly Creatures
Chuck and Buck
Happiness
Serial Mom
Dead Alive
The Wedding Banquet
Monsoon Wedding

There're more, but my brain is feeling tired right now.

**EDIT....DO NOT WATCH...Chuck and Buck. You will be scarred for life. Sorry Redbobsled, but I think that is one of the most uncomfortable, insidious movies I've ever watched.

True, I'm still scarred from that one and I could barely tolerate THE GOOD GIRL because it made me think of CHUCK AND BUCK and then I got all creeped out all over again. But, I'm still glad that I saw it.

I'm sure you meant to put "Not" at the end of that.

The whole running thing with the REALLY bad actor made it more than watchable.

I guess i just like movies like that. Movies that make you squirm a whole lot. I've actually seen Chuck and Buck about 4 or 5 times, and I love the delicious squirming. The Good Girl is another good recommendation. It reminds you of Chuck and Buck because Mike White (who played Buck) wrote it too. But maybe you already knew that.

Ugh, why does everybody go on so about The Graduate? Worst Movie Ever

I'm surprised Breakfast at Tiffany's was mentioned, but I'll agree, great flick.

How about some must see animated films? I'll toss out Yellow Submarine and The Great Mouse Detective for starters.

I know, I'm a dork.

"A Bridge Too Far" is fantastic as is "Day of the Jackyll".

How about "Raging Bull"?

And like I said, I like CHUCK AND BUCK for the squirm factor. I've never seen ANY other movie that made me feel all squirmy like that. I wouldn't call it "delicious"...but, it was definitely all squirmy.

See the movie NAKED by mike leigh!!!!!!! somehow this movie manipulates us into liking a rapist, who's an off the charts genius. it's sick.

Other great movies are:

The Year My Voice Broke and its sequel Flirting

The Thin Blue Line (by Errol Morris) Possibly the best documentary ever.

And also Werner Herzog's Fitzcarraldo trilogy of movies (Fitzcarraldo, Burden of Dreams, My Best Friend........all fascinating)

Yeah, everyone got they opinions. What I decided to do is just go ahead and see all of the 100 top-rated movies on IMDB (http://www.imdb.com/top_250_films). I actually just finished this little quest a couple days ago when I saw "Duck Soup".

Let me tell you, I am really glad I decided to do it. There were a few bombs here and there ("Duck Soup" among them), but overall, I saw a lot of amazingly good movies that I would never have thought to rent otherwise. In general, Imdb voters are voting for good shit! Use their wisdom!

Now I have only 50 to go for the whole top 250... :-)

That's generally true, but there are exceptions where fanboys can pump a film up well beyond where it belongs. I mean, two of the top 15 movies of all time are Lord of the Rings 1 & 2? Other than that, it's a pretty good list. I wouldn't recommend watching 21, 24, and 71 all in the same day, though.

Oh one other thing related to must-see films. I'm astounded by the number of people I meet who just haven't seen the Big Lebowski. If you, reader, have not seen this film, then you're missing out. Really.

The Big Labowski is a wonderful masterpiece. There is some great humor lurking in the dark in that movie. It takes you for a crazy rollercoaster ride and in the end, you'll wonder...."what was I missing out on" John Goodman is such a perfect asshole in this move, he reminds me of plenty of people i know.

Your out of your element, Donnie!!

I wouldn't recommend watching 71 at all. P.U. that'a stinky movie.

I agree that LOTR is not top 15 material, God people are dumb.

Oh, and as far as must see movies. You can't forget Kevin Smith. Clerks at least. Many would say Dogma and Chasing Amy but I wouldn't. Mallrats is mighty fine though.

Bah! Am I the only person who hated that movie, and thought that Roberto Benigni should have been shamed into retirement for making it? I think I am, but I'll go ahead and rant about it anyway.

Hello, Roberto? You don't make a frickin' Holocaust movie where a little kid not only makes it all the way through alive, but with his childlike innocence and naivete intact. I'm all for happy endings, but that kind of shit didn't happen, and it's disrespectul to imply that it did, even though the film is obviously a work of fiction. Pick up a book, Roberto. The majority of children that age were quite simply murdered. There was no hiding them. The ones not murdered surely did not emerge from the experience under the illusion that it was all a cute little game, with a tank as a prize at the end. Aaargh!

So, yeah, anyway, I hated that movie. A lot.

Note: The preceding rant is not meant as an attack on MonkeyGirl, who suggested it. She's still as cool as the other side of the pillow, and anyway, I know that in hating this flick, I'm in the vast minority.

perhaps not thinking about this as a "Holocaust film"and more like one that deals passionately with the love of a father for his son. Also, you have to keep in mind that the son is the narrator, so he is aware and was probably quickly made aware of what was really going on.

As a mom, I saw this movie as an inspiration. I hope I am such a loving parent and spouse.

A movie that I LOVED that so few people that I know have seen is Brazil . Personally, I think its Terry Gilliams finest 2 and a half hours, and it is a great commetary on modern society, and where were headed, even though it does it in a rather fantastical manner.

Other great movies I loved:

Fight Club
8mm
Se7en
American History X
Blazin' Saddles
The Professional
The Fifth Element
Arsenic and Old Lace
Twelve Monkeys

All good movies. Some people may not be able to stomach 8mm or Se7en, though. Those two are pretty graphic, and pretty disturbing at times. But very well made movies.
