just out of catlike curiousity...
i've come to terms with the fact all music isn't for everybody. that said, any guys or gals at 97x actually play songs they don't exactly care for.
i understand this topic has probably been touched on before. i'm just not in the know.
i must say beforehand, that if everyone loves everything they play i'm gonna feel quite surprised and impressed, probably a little bit foolish.
thanks in advance.

I'm getting pretty damn sick of the Backstreet Boys, myself.
Aw, SNAP! Wrong station!

I can honestly say that there isn't one song on the playlist right now that I dislike. There are certainly a few songs and artists that I wouldn't necessairily listen to for pleasure in my private life, but there is nothing that I hate.
Perhaps I am in a unique position of just liking SO many different kinds of music. There isn't much that I don't listen to in some capacity. From alt-country to zydeco, I probably own a little of everything in my collection.
That's why 97X was the only station I ever wanted to work at. My tastes were certainly shaped by growing up listening to the station. There are so many artists who I wouldn't have been exposed to without hearing them here first. Now, I get to help shape the playlist and get new music heard.
While I wouldn't expect every listener to *love* every single song we play, I know that we attract people who not only want, but expect to be challenged. As long as they are presented in the right way, I think that blending all these genres of music into one is the most intriguing option. It's what we, as a station, do best and I love being a part of it.

hate's a strong word, i didn't mean to take it that far.
i agree my tastes are also influenced by listening. i wouldn't know about !!! if it weren't for you shiv. thanks again.
so how then do the playlists get formed? i wasn't aware that everyone was allowed their pieces in the puzzle. i wouldn't assume as much from the clear channel perspective.
sorry about the probing. i'm a curious cat. the process sounds damn interesting.

Shivvy's answer was pretty much spot on.
Music meetings normally include Shiv, Sledge & myself although any 97X staffer is invited. It's an open door meeting at all times and other 97Xers certainly voice their opinions to us constantly.
While it's very possible that ours isn't terribly different from other stations music meetings, it's definitely not a place where we scour over research numbers and sales figures and ponder what other stations are doing. We're more inclined to discuss what we feel would be the best representation of 97X from week to week.
Musically, we all come from slightly different places but still fall within the wide 97X spectrum of music.
We do look at some charts, and discuss what marketing plans labels have, and even how a song or an artist would stack up against the rest of our playlist: do we have too many songs of the same tempo or style? Would this song cut through the clutter? A lot of times it's simply a question of asking ourselves: Is this any good? And most always, we have a good time doing it. Honestly, it's the highlight of my work week and is the single most reason why I came to work here. Like Shiv & Sledge, I grew up on 97X and am priveliged to help shoulder the responsibility of maintaining the legacy of this radio station.
Bottom line tho, we strive to put together a playlist, a music library, and a broadcast presentation not so much that we like, but YOU like, and we can be proud to be associated with.
Beats the piss out of "cranking the hits, man!" ferdamnsure.

Mike forgot to mention that we have monkeys in the meetings for entertainment.

Yeah, but you could still do it. I never got on the chat room when you had that. I just wrote down what I thought about the songs and sent an e-mail. Seems like it could be done in some fashion.
I don't know, I liked it anyway. T'was just wondering.

Parliament Procedure
I'll second that...motion passed. Start the on-air music meetings again. Those were really fun to listen to.
