Does anyone know what happened to HUM? They are one of my favorite bands, but I can never find any news about them. I've heard many stories about them, ie - they broke up, one dude quit to form another outfit, blah blah. However, I can't seem to find a solid truth. Anyone know what happened to them, and can anyone give me a list of exactly how many albums they put out besides "You prefer and astronaut" and "Downward is heavenward"?

Sambo - remember that http://www.allmusic.com is your friend in such matters:
...Four years passed with mouths watering between the release of their first major label effort and 1998's Downward Is Heavenward, as the band took some time off to relax and incubate. This, their fourth and sadly last album, was recorded twice, due to the band's perfectionist tactics in the studio and their promise that every member must love every part of every song. The wait was well worth the product, as Downward Is Heavenward is one of the most darkly romantic and timeless albums ever created. Hum's gorgeous, spacey and limitless sound expanding to new lengths; however, those unfamiliar with the band remained so. The album sold poorly, only 38,000 copies in two years, and resulted in RCA's decision to drop the band from their roster. Further misfortune struck as their tour van was destroyed in an accident while touring, essentially forcing the last nail in the coffin.

The lead singer, Matt Talbot, has a new band, Centaur, which has an album out....very Hum-like.
Their other guitarist has a band Glifted, and the one song I've heard from that isn't bad...but never quite caught on with me.

Hope that helps

Wasn't some of the members in a band named National Skyline as well?

Hum's old drummer used to be in a band w/ a friend of mine, until his wife made him quit the band. Maybe she was the Yoko of Hum...

Regarding Centaur.....*ble-e-e-e-ch* what a letdown!

Thanks for the help guys. Sledge - I forgot about allmusic. Funny...they gave Hum 4 1/2 stars and my band 1 1/2 stars. We rule!

Hum is so awesome it's scary.

I have a T shirt that has a gelcap looking pill with the word "Hum" on it... it also says "expires 01-01-01"...

I think they did a farewell show that New Year's Eve.

I miss Hum.

There is another Hum album called Elektra 2000 if memory serves. It was released before their other two, much more raw and less produced... and I think the copy I have is a reissue that came out AFTER their other two. It's good stuff.

Elbo room, I think. Was in Chicago for another show just after Thanksgiving & remember seeing the listing--of course was bummed that I couldn't fly back out for it!

I miss them, too!

Is there anyone on the board who wasn't sucked in by HUM at first? I've probably mentioned this before, but I wasn't impressed the first time I heard them. Went to a show mainly for the local opening act and thought HUM was ok, but nothing special. By the 3rd time I saw them.....I was hooked. It took a little time to appreciate them.

My friend who was a fan in the first place just shakes his head in disgust! ;)

I wasn't. I saw them on an episode of Howard Stern and I kinda dismissed them because of that. It wasn't a fair assessment cause I really only judged them from that one hit single that I thought had corny lyrics. And the fact that dorky Howard Stern was promoting them.

Earlier than that is "Fillet Show", released (like Elektra 2000) on 12 inch records. It isn't as heavy as the later stuff, but still good imho, and it's reminiscent of Poster Children material of the same time. There might also be an ep that came between Fillet Show and Elektra. When I went to OU, I saw them during finals week, and it was exactly what I needed.

I saw Hum open for Bush here in Cincy at Taft Theater (yes, I was a poor misguided child of "alternative" radio and I liked Bush once upon a time). I think it was in September of '98. I went to see Bush, and was completely sucked in by Hum. Truly some good stuff from that band.

I don't remember an ep between Fillet Show and Elektra 2000, which I believe is their best CD. In 1993 they played at my house at 108 E. Daniel in Champaign, Ill. for $75 and all the beer and nitrous they wanted. We made a killing at that party.

If you like Hum you should check out Lovecup, another Champaign band of that era that also put stuff out on the Poster Children's label 12 Inch.

You had a kick ass band play in your house and made a bunch of money to boot.

Dammit. This would have been a hilarious spin off of the Dada thread (kinda, I know how you jerks do). Though I haven't heard of Hum, so I guess the jokes on me. I when I first read this, I thought that this was what it was. Guess I was wrong. Thanks a lot.

here's a little bonus for you all -- a freaking hilarious Electra 2000 review from the Daily Illini by Matt from the Fiery Furnaces, where he simultaneously pokes fun and gives props in his inimitable way...

I remember seeing Hum play in Boise before I'd heard any of their music. On the flyer it said they had just signed to RCA. The cover was $5 and there were about 20 people there. Man, they were awesome. Needless to say, I picked up "You'd Prefer an Astronaut" as soon as it came out. I talked to the band afterwards and they were really cool and really nice.

Since I've started buying vinyl I've kept an eye on ebay for good stuff. There was a copy of Hum's Astronaut. It went for $255!

Was it that Caddy commercial that made it so desirable?
