Disney to rent self-destructing DVDs

LOS ANGELES, May 16 — This disc will self-destruct in 48 hours. That is the warning The Walt Disney Co. will issue this August when it begins to “rent” DVDs that after two days become unplayable and do not have to be returned.

DISNEY HOME VIDEO unit Buena Vista Home Entertainment will launch a pilot movie “rental” program in August that uses the self-destruction technology, the company said Friday.
The discs stop working when a process similar to rusting makes them unreadable. The discs start off red, but when they are taken out of the package, exposure to oxygen turns the coating black and makes it impenetrable by a DVD laser.
Buena Vista hopes the technology will let it crack a wider rental market, since it can sell the DVDs in stores or almost anywhere without setting up a system to get the discs back.
The discs work perfectly for the two-day viewing window, said Flexplay Technologies, Inc., the private company which developed the technology using material from General Electric Co.
Chief Executive Alan Blaustein said he was also in conversations with other companies to use the self-destructing discs.
The technology cannot be hacked by programmers who would want to view the disc longer because the mechanism which closes the viewing window is chemical and has nothing to do with computer technology.
However, the disc can be copied within 48 hours, since it works like any other DVD during that window.
Buena Vista did not disclose pricing plans but said the discs, dubbed EZ-D, would be available in August in select markets with recent releases including “The Recruit,” “The Hot Chick,” and “Signs.”

So let's see....this new technology would allow people who really want to copy DVDs to continue to do so.

And the process would depend on disposable plastic. Any chance the manufacturers would have a recycling program for the old discs?

I think that is the last thing on their minds, which is a damn shame. Indeed, it will create quite a volume of waste--unnecessary waste. Particularly since they even share how the disposable DVDs can be copied, what is the point? Movie fanatics can now purchase disposable DVDs for a low price, and burn them to a permanent medium? Did I misread this? It seems like Disney is shooting themselves in the feet.

The only thing I can see where this is going is, you buy the DVD for the price of a rental, then wouldn't have to worry about the pain-in-the-arse chore of returning it.

The problems with this:

You can still copy it within the 48 hr. window, so you'd be acquiring your own copy of the movie for the price of the rental!
ULTRA-WASTEFUL! I would hope there would be some kind of recycling thing, like a little drop-off box the next time you visit the place of purchase for a fresh movie.

Hmm.

Didn't they try this a few years back with DIVX discs? And wasn't it a complete failure?

This is exactly what I had said in the previous post, just in different words. I thought...
