Okay, so at work I check my yahoo account randomly throughout the day. Lately though, if I open an e-mail from a particular person I get a message telling me that internet explorer has performed an illegal function and must be shut down. I only get this message when opening one person's e-mail, when I open my sister's e-mail (who's on the same server as the other person) everything's kosher. This has happened on two computers. Now, I would assume that it's not a virus since our virus software automatically updates daily and I would also assume we have some sort of protection against being hacked (I could be assuming too much here). Any other ideas as to what it could be?

Are the e-mails coming to you in html format? What I mean is, do they look like web pages? Because, what's proabably happening is, the e-mail has some bad or malicious code that's crashing IE. Just delete the offending e-mail and you'll be good to go.

I do delete them, but it keeps happening--will check the format though, thanks :)
just got it again, here's the error message:
IEXPLORE caused an invalid page fault in
module URLMON.DLL at 017f:77065552. (I left off the rest of the code--am sending it to the computer guy...)

Are the e-mails from people you know or are they spam? Spam or advertisements are notorious for having crappy little Java applets and stuff in your e-mail which could crash your browser. Have you tried sending them to a different type of e-mail client, like Outlook and opening them in that? It could be something with the yahoo e-mail that's causing it. I never use yahoo, so I'm not sure, but I think it's like hotmail.
Here's a test that won't take much time. Try signing up for a hotmail account and forwarding the offending e-mails to that account and see if they bomb.

The e-mails are from someone I know, I don't have any problems with them at home--just here at the office. I've begun using outlook to e-mail him, but will try forwarding them to my hotmail account to see...

Do you have an HP printer or HP software installed on your PC?

I found this on the MS site...not sure if it will help, but it's worth checking out...
SYMPTOMS
When you try to start Internet Explorer, you may receive the following error message:
IEXPLORE caused an Invalid Page Fault in module Urlmon.dll
When this error message occurs, you are unable to browse the Internet.
CAUSE
This issue can occur when you install the Hewlett-Packard (HP) Instant Delivery program that is included with the HP DeskJet 932c printer.
RESOLUTION
To resolve this issue, contact Hewlett-Packard to inquire about a fix that resolves this issue.
WORKAROUND
To work around this issue, remove the HP Instant Delivery program:
Click Start, point to Programs, point to HP Instant Delivery, and then click Uninstall Instant Delivery.
In the Hewlett-Packard Instant Delivery uninstall program, click Next, and then click Finish.
When you receive the "Delete delivery data?" message, click No.
Restart the computer.
This guy (http://forums.eyo.com.au/t2538-15-1.html) looks like he had the same problem, with very little luck in getting it resolved. Maybe the thread will give you some ideas. Or you can always wait until Docta or one of the other house geeks sees this post...they may have a fix.

Here ya go:
http://support.microsoft.com/?kbid=254490
Just click Start, Run, then type in regedit (I think) and remove the offending registry item as shown on the above link.

You can use internet explorer, right? It's just when you click to open that one person's message?!?
My guess is the same as DSM's. That person has some code in their e-mail that is crashing your IE. It is possible that the code is a virus, but it really could be anything.
Ask the person if they've recently changed their signature, or added a background or something. Trying to open the e-mail via Hotmail is a good idea. Another thing to try is to access your Yahoo! account from a different machine.
If the e-mail never works in Yahoo! no matter where you log on, but works in Hotmail, then the problem is related to something Yahoo! does. If the e-mail doesn't work on your machine, be it Hotmail or Yahoo!, but it works if you log in from a different machine, then the problem is with something specific to your registry.

Am thinking it's something with yahoo! b/c it worked fine in hotmail and it's happened on other machines, but only while I'm at work (so it could be our server here at work--we've outsourced our IS work). He's on the same server as my sister and her e-mails open up with no troubles, he has just acquired a new position at a different location and it could be something on the computer he's using that makes it all screwy on my end...

huh what? did someone call?
strange, so it works on non-work computers huh? may be something in the firewall or a pushed out policy, but weird that it would open in hotmail.

Like I said docta, we've outsourced our IS to an off-site company, we've got someone here only part of the week and to my knowledge we've not had anything resembling a firewall before. They are trying to reconfigure things to make us more compliant with government/security standards (our passwords will soon be changing ever 45 days! woo hoo?) so it could be that they've been adding things to the server without letting us know...

It took me a little time to figure out what was going on since I don't have that HP file y'all were talking about on my computer, but there was some unsanctioned spyware on my computer..it's now gone :) Thanks for all your help!
