View Full Version : DVD bargain bin @ Wal-Mart

Has anybody else found some kick-ass deals in the scary bins at Wal-Mart??? Personally, I do HATE giving Wal-Mart my money, but in Oxford it's all we've got. Sometimes I stop in there just to pick up my laundry stuff and cleaning supplies cheaply and I walk out with a handful of goodies from the bargain bins.
They seem to be refreshing titles often and they are all $5.88. I have recently picked up "Tigerland", "Slums Of Beverly Hills", "The Truth About Cats And Dogs", and "Freeway." Keep in mind, there's a lot of junk in there but always a few gems. There are plenty of titles that I bought not too long ago at full price and now they are less than $6. I find it so ironic that they only carry edited music, but I can buy FREEWAY there. I'll take my cheap dvd's where I can get 'em though.

I just watched Freeway yesterday. That movie makes me so happy. One of the best comedies EVER. Now if they just had Freeway II: Confessions of a Trickbaby in the bins, I'd be sold.

Sounds like you lucked out. I remember searching up and down for FREEWAY about a year ago and being told it was out of print. I eventually tracked one down at the Media Play in Norwood.
And TIGERLAND is an excellent flick.

do y'know if blockbuster still sells used movies for a good bargain? a few years back i bought a ton of used VHS there, but after i got the digital cable, i don't go there at all anymore.

Roger,
"Freeway" was out of print for a short period of time, but it's back. It was released by Republic Pictures Home Video back in the day and they went out of business. Their catalog eventually went to Artisan, who reissued all the titles in the same versions just with a new logo on them. That means that dvd's like Freeway and Bound are back in print, even though they should be upgraded to anamorphic editions.
Now, Freeway 2 is indeed out of print. It went unavailable shortly after originally turning up for rental. You might be able to find a used copy somewhere, but it is pretty scarce.

I just picked up the double-disc release of the ROYAL TENENBAUMS at Blockbuster for $9. Always a good bargain to be found there...

what the. . .?
didn't I pay like $30 bucks for the royal tenenbaums when it first came out?
but I HAVE watched it probably a hundred times since then.
i could never have waited this long to have 24 hour access to the tenenbaums.

Yeah, I love the bargain bin. Picked up PeeWee's Big Adventure, Neverending Story II (shut up), Night Shift, Creepshow, The Man Who Knew Too Little and Dangerous Liaisons in one trip. I haven't been in awhile. Think I'll do that tonight.
And since we're braggin', here's my collection (http://guzzlefish.com/collection.php?username=iprayforsound&mediatype=D). Can't touch Shiv, but I think it's nice anyway.

Amen sista, I love Emmitt Otter--now if I could just find "bunny picnic" I'd be in Henson heaven...

Well, thankee much, although I still gotta give Shiv the credit as it would only cost him $15 to go ahead and render my advantage null and void. It would cost me like...um...I dunno, $36,000 to tie up with him. Emmet Otter was my absolute favorite Henson production when I was a kid (later got edged by Dark Crystal), but it's still my all time favorite Christmas movie, followed by A Christmas Story and Rudolph the Red-Nosed Reindeer (bumbles bounce, y'know).
Edited to add: hit the bargain bin last night, grabbed Altered States, Aspen Extreme (shut up), Slums of Beverly Hills, 3 stooges 2 disc set, and somethin' else. I forget. It wasn't Ernest Goes to Camp, though. I put that one back.
Edited again to add: the one I forgot was *shudder* The Mod Squad. I await the inevitable impending flames. Fire away.

I actually did pick this one up from the Wal-Mart bargain bin. Now you don't have to feel so bad about The Mod Squad my friend, Nowhutimean?

Yeah during the last holiday season I actually picked up a good selection of DVDs from the aforementioned bargain bin:
Pee-Wee's Big Adventure, Lawnmower Man, and Pump Up The Volume! I was angered by the fact that the Pee-Wee DVD cardboard sleeve was scratched up a bit... but $5.88, I can handle that.

Paul Gross (I think his name is TJ in the movie) was in my favorite tv show of all time, Due South.
I picked up Liberty Hights in the Bargian bin at WM. WELL worth the $5 I paid. I've picked up a few others, but I can't remember at the moment what they are.

Does anyone know where I can get a copy of the Star Wars Christmas special on DVD?
Seriously, I got the Band of Brothers DVD set (in the tin box) for $30 used about a month ago. That's all I've watched for the last week after thewife and kids are asleep. Gives me goosebumps every time, especially the We Stand Alone Together interviews with the surviving members of Easy Company on the bonus disc.
I'll agree, Tigerland is a great movie. A Thin Red Line had great cinematography, but it was a sleeper.

Ummm....maybe. Definately VHS. Either way, it'll be a bootleg. But still, I mean....George Lucas' defining colossal mistake? Ya gotta have it.

As someone who had the same attitude as you, and managed to see it, let me tell you: "No, you don't need to see it. Please, for godsakes. Save yourself."
I won't get that time back. As I recall, there was a 4 hour psychedelic dance interlude in the middle of the special.
Save yourself.

I just went to Blockbuster tonight for a rental. They had the 25% off tent sale, where I picked up Girl Interupted on DVD and The Royal Tenanbaums, which they only had on VHS. But who's complaining? I was going to rent it because I hadn't seen it yet, and I only paid $3.75 to own it. My total purchase came to $13.49. And the R.T.s was great. I can tell it's going to be one of my faves and I need to get the soundtrack now.

I actually nabbed Royal Tenenbaums on DVD for 8 bucks at Game Swap the other day. Eastgate Mall was having some kind of sidewalk sale and they had it used. Couldn't pass it up.

maaan, walmart is badass...
i got a emerson MP3 cd player, and it's really really nice, for 38 bucks. and it supports 300 albums with up to 99 tracks on each album and cdr, cdrw.
i don't buy dvds or anything else there really, unless it is in the bargain section, where i got stripes for 4.66.
