3rd Silo Releases "Ancient Tones and Death Knells" by the High Strange Drifters ==============================================

3rd Silo Records is thrilled to announce its latest release "Ancient Tones and Death Knells" by the High Strange Drifters.

This album is a collection of broadside ballads performed by Ed Cunningham (Comet Bluegrass All-Stars, etc.), Dave Morrison (Ass Ponys), Randy Cheek (Ass Ponys) among a host of others.

Broadside ballads were sold to be sung, but this was not their only use.

"The ballads were about the events of the time from murders to politics to love. Prior to recorded music being available, families and pub dwellers used the ballads for amusement and entertainment, singing the familiar tunes to which they were written. The broadside ballad is widely considered the precursor of the newspaper. As you listen to the songs unfold on the record, you will see that the plots could appear as headlines in any newspaper today."
-- Ed Cunningham (from the liner notes)

In "Ancient Tones and Death Knells", The High Strange Drifters have not created a simple revivalist effort that attempts to faithfully, desperately and hopelessly recreate the music and sounds of its predecessors. Nor have they created a series of tongue-in-cheek covers that are an ironic reinterpretation of ancient works. The High Strange Drifters have modernized the songs while maintaining a reverence for their history, tradition and intent. They understand the music and the connection that these songs have with the here and now.

With one foot firmly planted in the past and the other in the present, The High Strange Drifters present us with a work that will more than likely become your favorite record.
