Ever since I was 9, and the 'baggy' scene was alive and kicking all over the UK, The Stone Roses became my favourite band and paved the way for the music I listen to today.
None of the band were great lookers, the lead singer Ian Brown, was hardly a potention American Idol winner, but they seemed to have it all.
I loved them back in '89, and for some reason, I love them even more now.
Songs like Fools Gold, Waterfall, I Am The Resurrection, and of course the greatest song known to man, This Is The One, which was the highlight of there debut album, recently voted in NME Greatest Album Of All Time, beating the likes of The Pixies, Beach Boys and The Beatles.
I just wanna know how big these guys got in the US, plus how respected they are.
If you have never heard of them, and have a few dollars burning a whole in your pocket, I urge you to purchase there self-titled debut album. It will not let you down. Still sounds as fresh today as it did 15 years ago.

The Stone Roses is a cool group. And you're right -- you can pop 'em in 15 years later and they still sound pretty fresh.
They were relatively big here back in the day like around '90-92 or so. I have a special place in my heart for them since those were my formative years.

UKr~ I think you're gonna kill me. I have nothing but respect for the group, but I opt for my Charlies! It's Rob's B3 playing that slays me; add to it Tim's voice & I'm set for anything. I dig most of the bands in the genre--best vibe around!!!
As far as how the Roses are perceived here in the U.S. "Love Spreads" is how the mainstream audience knows them. I think it's safe to say that Modern Rock fans know & appreciate them, but we are by far the minority over here. If you pay attention to the album sales there aren't a whole lot of these bands that sell big numbers. And take a look at the movie 24 Hour Party People--a very select few of us were able to check it out before it was available in the video stores.
I wish more people knew about them!

I Wanna Be Adored was a big single (on 97X, and I think 120 Minutes, but I can't remember the video so I could be mistaken). I think my favorite by them is She Bangs the Drums, followed by Elephant Stone.

KCNEON- as much as I disagree, I'm not gonna kill you coz I love The Charlatans too. One of the highlights of last year was watching The Charlatans supporting Oasis, as they streamed through a greatest hits set, of which there are many.
I just think that The Stone Roses have been mostly ignored, and maybe only found in the later part of there career, when they we're still amazing, but not as musically perfect as they were in '89.
I can only plead to everyone out there to take a $15 risk on me, and buy there debut album, and if you think it sucks, well, you wont, so theres no risk at all.
I guarentee that you will have this in your all time top 10 after a few listens. I told you, still drives me crazy.

In 1989, a friend got his hands on an advanced copy of their debut and sent it to me with a note which read: "I think these guys are going to be big."
How right he was. I remember the first time I listened to that tape, just marvelling at the music, but expecially the bass lines. Granted, I was a pretty young buck at the time and my exposure to music was somewhat limited, but it still blew me away.
A few months later, he sent me Foolsgold on a mixed tape and that was it. I went through a phase of 6 years where I listened to that song at least once a week. I began to obsessively collect anything they released (singles on CD, tape, vinyl, videos, bootlegs, books, posters, t-shirts). Thus began the collection of music I have today.
The Roses are still the band I grade all others by. While some bands have released absolutely brilliant records which I treasure, John, Ian, Mani and Reni are my long road. I still marvel each listen how it just captivates me and still sounds so fresh.
I only wish I had seen them live or had the abiltity to get them back in the studio.

The Stones Roses definitely stand out.

i've been listening to them a lot lately ( i was bopping to and from class to "she bangs the drums" and "mersey paradise" today as a matter of fact). i think i was first aware of them in junior high, so around '92 or so. some of my other favorites are "ten storey love song," "i wanna be adored," "the hardest thing in the world," "waterfall," ohh it just goes on and on. i've also noticed in more recent times "fools gold" tends to show up at brit pop/mod/indie dance nights/record parties, whatever you want to call them, almost always.

Its wicked to see that they are both admired and adored on both sides of the globe. But in all reality, there sould be atleast 100 different names on this post already, showing there love for one of the worlds Greatest Bands ever.
I just hope reading this post will encourage those who are new to the band to go and buy an album or two. You will notice straight away that most of the UK Indie acts are based around this one movement.
They wont let you down, they are untouchable!

The self-titled Stone Roses CD is my absolute favorite of all time. Nothing else released in the past 14 years rivals it. I frequently change my mind on whether my favorite song is I am the Resurrection or Waterfall. I have 2 copies of their self-titled CD, 2 copies of Second Coming, and one each of The Complete Stone Roses and Turns into Stone. I frequently check the message boards of www.stoneroses.net to read the latest reunion rumor.
Thanks for proving that I am not the only obsessed fan.

I've always loved the Stone Roses! I first heard them in late '89 on college radio and thought they were good, but really fell in love with them in the summer of '90. I went to Greece that year, and what's popular in the UK is tends to catch on with the rest of Europe also, so the whole "Madchester" thing was going on then. My friends and I hung out at this bar called The Feather, and the most amazing DJ worked there. His name was Orestes and he played the coooolest music, including the Roses, of whom he was a huge fan. I immediately bought the cassette when I came back to the States, and wore it out. I then got the cd, which to this day it's one of my faves. Not only is the music incredible, but it brings back great memories.

If it was not for the drugs, these guys would have been huge.

Im sorry, but I totally disagree. Without the drugs, these guys wouldn't have made the music that they did. The whole baggy scene was based around drugs, and they, along with The Happy Mondays, we're huge icons on the scene because of there habits.
Take the LSD out of Sgt. Pepper and what would you have???
It scares me to even think about it.
I dont wanna be some guy promoting the use of drugs, but I gotta admit, you look at some of the Greatest albums of all time. 'Pet Sounds' by the Beach Boys, 'Revolver' by The Beatles, 'In Utero' by Nirvana, all heavy influenced by mind expanding drugs. And without sounding to outspoken here, GOD LOVE EM!!!
Drugs have become Rock n' Roll heritage, and without them, I would hate to see the state of our current music scene. They are the basis for 99.9% of all the great bands that emerged from the 60's and 70's, which have influenced all the bands we listen to today.
Sorry to go a little heavy on this, but I do believe that the Beatles became brilliant once they found drugs, and that goes for The Stone Roses too. I'm only thrilled that we DIDNT have to listen to them whilst they were only high on life. Like listening to Coldplay no doubt.

I would also like to say that I like them. Debut over Second Coming any day though.

One of my top ten albums and I was immediately hooked upon hearing Fools Gold for the first time. I still have the original CD (probably needs to be replaced due to scratches, overplaying). It defined that time of my life.
