So, they've been teasing us with who is going to be at Earth Day...I heard before it was Guide by Voices, but upon going to the Cat Power web site, it appears she will be there as well.
How freakin' cool is that?

Oops...I screwed up. The site is Matador and it's tour info for all their artists and I completely read it wrong.
Forgive me, I will go hide in my little corner now.

It isn't JUST Guided by Voices. It is GBV, French kicks, Brian Lovely, Circles and Arrows (A Cincy folk group with native american themes and instruments), a rock climbing wall, storytellers, environmental exhibitors, and other really cool things.

i've only heard one French Kicks song, Close To Modern, and I thought it was pretty fun.
Has anyone else listened to them much?

They are poppy. A good balance with GBV. For more info: www.frenchkicks.com
We always seem to have an ecclectic mix at earth day - Bob Mould with Splashdown & Cobra Verde; Cowboy Junkies with Ass Ponys; somehow it always seems to work.

The French Kicks are a damn good band live. I saw them at the Southgate House and they rocked the place. Just listening to the drummer can make me dazed and confused!

My favorite combo was in 2000 when Adrian Belew, John Strohm, Big in Iowa, and the Graveblankets played. We had a magical moment with the first Bears reunion on stage. But...I think this year will be the best ever. It will certainly be the most cuturally rich - we have a native american theme. Everyone else is focusing on the past 200 years of Ohio history for the state bicentennial but we are celebrating 2000 years of rich Ohio history and the lessons that can be learned from working with nature instead of against it.

Earth Day should be interesting. GBV is going to do a photo shoot at the park - they want a lot of crowd shots (this is your chance at stardom) hope we have a good turnout. I think the weather will be good - and the park is beautiful. The trees and viburnums are flowering ....even though we all thought last winter was never going to end. Seems like we have more publicity and interest than ever before.
......and a few surprises

No i meant to write was :) I happened to be half aleep when i wrote that.
Yah Polard was a cool teacher. He went off on this one girl a few times, but she always went out of her way to annoy him.
It was deffinitely delinqients such as myself that made that mans hair grow grey b4 his time
HE was always trying to challenge us with interesting assignments, Was overall one of tha kewler teachers i had.
I got freaked out when i saw him on stage at lollapalooza tho.
Tha funniest thing is, He used to play his bands records to torture me and classmates when we misbehaved. He would threaten us like "Behave or i will put on my records!" And we would all behave lol

You mean you tried to be good so you could do work instead of listening to GBV in class? Did you spend your childhood eating paint chips?

On a more serious note, GBV!GBV!GBV! There's no excuse to miss this show if you live within 100 miles. Free GBV? You've heard the stories from your friends. The only thing better than a GBV show is a FREE GBV show.

Yeah, but is a free SOBER Guided By Voices show better than one you gotta pay for where they get to pass around a bottle of Jack? I'm smugglin' Bob some booze....don't tell the cops.

I made it for the last half of the French Kicks and all of the Guided by Voices sets. What I heard of the French Kicks was good. It might have been an "alcohol-free event", but there was plenty of it back stage, thus allowing Guided by Voices to put on a better than expected set. They played quite a few new songs and a few older ones I haven't heard them play live, like Waved Out, one from the Circus Devils last album and one from Hotel of Fools. They played some older stuff as well. A fairly mixed set. I liked seeing them out doors for once. At the beginning Bob looked out out into the crowd, squinted and quipped "would someone please dim the lights?". Great time.
I took my 2 year old and she had a great time, too. I wasn't sure how well she would tolerate the volume or being there for too long, but we stayed until the end. I had her up on my shoulders at the beginning and she was clapping and woo-woo-ing. She saw Bob do an "everlasting big kick" and did a couple her self in response. She clapped after the songs without having to be prompted. She even asked to be put on the ground so she could dance. I'm so proud and glad I took her. I doubt that she will remember much about it in years to come, but I've got a few pictures for posterity. We both had a great time.

I was pretty bummed that I was going to have to miss this show, as I was busy until about 6:30 last night, but around 7:00 last night, I figured, what the heck, it's a free show, so I drove 10 minutes down to Sawyer Point to catch the last half of the show.
Yes, it was pretty clear that there was beer flowing backstage. No beer cans onstage, but plenty of plastic cups presumably filled with booze. Pretty good show overall. Glad I drove down for the last hour of the show. Off the top of my head, here's what songs I heard them play:
Watch Me Jumpstart, Game of Pricks, Buzzards and Dreadful Crows, Echos Myron, Tractor Rape Chain, Skills Like This, Glad Girls, The Brides Have Hit Glass, Don't Stop Now, Official Ironmen Rally Song, Everywhere with Helicopter, From a Voice Plantation, Storm Vibrations, Harrison Adams, Waved Out, plus 4 new songs from their upcoming CD, Earthquake Glue.
The encore featured Jimmy Mac joining them onstage on drums for two songs (Lethargy and Shocker in Gloomtown) followed by I Am a Scientist to close out the show.
Insterested to see what songs GBV played before I got there...

Saturday was absolutely beautiful! I made it to see GBV and it was my daughters first show. She's 18 months and she had a ball. I had her in her stroller and she danced and played. I felt like the best parent in the world for not taking her to a (god forbid) mainstream show. GBV was good I wish I could have made it earlier to see the other bands. It was great to be back in Cincinnati again even though it was for a little while.

Except for the sound quality (ummm....it's outdoors....what'd I expect?), sitting on the ground, and these 3 "look at me, I'm so weird and cool" kids in front of us, I had a darn good time. I gotta say that listening to the music and watching the dozens of kids running away from their parents, picking up trash and playing with it, dancing, clapping, chasing dogs and tripping over people was more fun than watching the stage. Of course, I was pretty far from the stage. Oh well. I'd call the day a success.

Agreed...it was a little of an unusual atmosphere, unlike the usual tightly-packed smoky clubs where I usually see GBV, but it was fun. I was thankful to be able to sit on the grass in back and still see the stage, because I was hurtin' from wearing uncomfortable shoes for a job interview and didn't think I could make it through on my feet.
Pretty tight show, even with the obvious backstage beer. As always, I would have liked to hear more of the "hits" but the new stuff didn't sound too bad. I think I like the "I'll Replace You with Machines" song. And in any event, they played "Tractor Rape Chain" (my favorite song ever) and "I am a Scientist," so I went away happy. :)

the show in Lexington was at a new venue that just opened downtown last wednesday called The Dame.
I missed Warren Zanes but i asked bob and he said he liked him pretty well and that he was super nice.
i was dead tired at earth day from staying up ALL night the night before and a little bored at having seen the same exact show (minus teenage fbi but plus a jimmy mac) the night before as well. but i did see two little kids ( a girl and a boy, like 4 years old) standing together, listening to gbv and bopping around. that alone was worth being there. it was the cutest thing ever.
