Uncle Sam owes me a bunch of money. What cool tech toy should I buy? I was kind of leading towards an ultra-compact digital camera (like one of the Elphs), but maybe there's some cool must-have I should be looking at instead. I had thought about an iPod, also......

Yeah, I've got the Elph S200, and it's super swizzeet. I'd definately say you can't go wrong with it.
If you don't wanna spend all that money on a camera (it's around $300), you can pick up the new Logitech camera and spend the rest on other fun. The Logitech is about the size of a credit card and about as thick as 5 of 'em. No flash, no zoom, but it's still cool (and it's only like $150 or so).
Sony has a really cool little camera, too, but it's near the price of the Elph without a lot of the features. It's just a bit smaller.

one of those cool usb drives that hooks on your keyring. you can plop anything on'm, but the best part is if you use multiple computers you can put all your favorites and cookies in there to follow you around, super cool.

it's small enough to hang on a keyring and you can also save stuff on there? wow, that's so excessive!

Maybe so. But I should probably stop calling them "Deduction #1" and "Deduction #2"... I think they're getting a complex.

I still haven't decided. One of the reason I'd held off on purchasing a digital camera, was it seemed like I always had to trade off either zoom or resolution to get one of the super-compact models. Now, it looks like there may be a model that doesn't force me to make that choice: The Canon Powershot S400 (http://www.dcresource.com/reviews/cameraDetail.php?cam=443). It seems like it would meet all my needs, but I know nothing about digital cameras, and am easily distracted by shiny things. Does someone who does have an informed opinion have any criticisms of this camera, or can see in the specs some problems that I should be aware of before I plunk down a huge chunk of $$$ on this?

Well, it's exactly the same as my camera except for the zoom (you're looking at the better one). I've never had a problem with it, and it's really easy to use. Oh, and the pictures look great if you care about that sort of thing.

Thanks for all the input! I ended up buying the S400. I'll let you know what I think.

Well dad...
You could always lower it to a 4 inch ground clearance and install neon lights and nitrus, then proceed to weave through traffic like a bat out of hell.
Then again, if it were to cause Deductions 1 & 2 to ruin the upholstery, I'd just assume you don't do it.
