Ditto the Audioslave, although I can take Zwan.
And of course, there's my all-time David Bowie and Sting vetos, but they're hardly in heavy rotation.

If you look at the top 3 or 4 People's Countdown favorites, those are generally my least favorite songs in the rotation. Oddly enough, the back end of the People's Countdown usually has my favorite songs.
This week is not exception. I dislike Evanescence, the new Johnny Cash, and Electric 6. Oh, how I dislike Electric 6. And Evanescence sounds like generic nu metal to me.
And I really dig Rainer Maria, Postal Service, Massive Attack

The Evanescence song gets my vote.. I mean, the vocals are cool, but when you get into the "YO! Homeboy.. LP in 'Da House" in the background then the growling portion of the song, I feel like I'm listening to my local "Alternative" rock station... I'm glad when it's all over..

although i've liked a lot of rainer maria stuff in the past, i can't stomach the new song. not sure why, but i just can't stand it. audioslave eats my ass. i do like the first zwan single, though i want to hate it because i want to hate billy corgan. but i digress - it's good shit.

I find that the reason most people who can't stand the Donnas is because they actually take them seriously. They're fun and ridiculously campy. (And they're all my girfriend(s), yeah, girlfriends. That's the ticket ).
I hate any of that emo-pop-poser-punk crap. That stuff's just as unimaginative and copy-catting as Nu-Metal. But hey, they've got the kids all fooled, shop at Hot Topic, dress like Avril and you're cool now aren't you, Timmy ?

And while I enjoyed the first Streets song, that last two (esp. the current one) are utter crap. "You're listenin' to the Streets...oh, oh, oh..." Yeah, no shit. Isn't that clever vocal styling reserved for early '90s pop-rap acts like Vanilla Ice??

That's the beauty of 'em. They're total crap, but it's fun. I can't explain why I like them, the first time I ever heard them, like back in '98 when they were all like 16 they were even worse than they are now, but there was just something about them, you know so bad they're good.

Oh, and ditto on the Streets, I kinda dug "Let's Push Things Forward" at first but they played it into the ground ( as 97x has gotten really bad about lately ). But now everytime I hear it or anything else by him I just wanna go bust some Limey twit in the mouth.

I am so freaking sick of Jurassic 5. If I never hear them again, it will be too soon. I also totally HATE that evanescence song and anything by Beth Orton.
On the other hand, at first I totally hated the All American Rejects (just another Jimmy Eat World imitation), but I have to admit it grew on me...it is pretty catchy.
I also HATE Jack Johnson. The lyrics are oh-so-painfully trite and awful and completely stupid.
Whew. Thanks for letting me get all of that vitriol off my chest!

Oh, and this doesn't usually happen, but I'm down with Jesus! At least on the Donnas. I know that they're pretty much just female cock rock, and that their lyrics are awful ("I must've had too many Diet Cokes, Cause I'm laughing at all your stupid jokes." I am not surprised by many of these choices, but I must admit to being floored at the dislike for Rainer Maria. It is even more interesting because I think that the song is enjoyed en masse by the WOXY staff, but you guys seem to really not care for it. Out of everything here, that one surprises me the most.
I always like these threads because I am fascinated by what people like and dislike. I just really love all kinds of music. At any given time I am hardpressed to find even one song on our playlist that I don't personally care for.
Hell, the person that started this thread ripped on the new Paul Weller which is one of my VERY favorite songs we've got on the air now.
Out of anything we're playing now, I must agree with the Electric 6. I like some silly novelty records, but this one sounds like an outtake from the Rocky Horror Picture Show to me.

I love the diversity on this station- this is my number one source for discovering new music. There's always one or two songs that grind my bearings, as has been pointed out-others like those same songs I can't take. Really, it's hard to imagine how 97X keeps me so musically happy.
The current one that gets me is that "Hot Hot Heat" Bandages song. Although the first five or six times I heard it I swore the guy was singing : "Bite my Gen... Bite my gen.... bite my genitals" instead of bandages 3x. Then there's a lot of noise that sounds like bite my arms, shave my legs, [insert some indecipherable form of bodily mutilation here] for you. ??? It kind of fit, although bandages makes a little more sense.
And I have to agree with the Streets. Blech. you can quote me on that.

Now that's funny.. ha ha!
All of us at the station enjoy these threads, it's good for a few days of in-house discussion. We don't expect to everyone to like every last song we play but it as this thead indicates, one person's fave is another's bane, no?
Whenever there is a strong reaction either way to a song, it usually means one thing: it's a hit. Occasionally, we'll play a few.
Feedback is always, always welcome & appreciated. :) If you prefer, you can always e-mail one of us personally.
We try to program a wide & diverse selection of modern music, and we really don't take what we add to our playlist lightly. Check out any other commercial station, and I'll be proud to stack up our playlist against theirs 24/7/365.

ON the Donnas train of thought....
I totally agree with Jesus Presley. the Donnas don't intend to bring anything revolutionary to the scene, they just want to party, and that they have no trouble doing. It's almost bordering on comedy, true, but it's fun, and that is all that counts. If you want to be Tool, be tool, if you want to enjoy your life, do otherwise. Did anybody go to the Donnas show last week. I can't believe no one has posted on the concerts thread. I thought it was great, really high energy, but a lot of other people can't get over the detractions mentioned above and won't let go.

Thank God. I thought I was the only who dislikes The Streets!
I like try to guess which DJ's like which songs. Outside of requests and the formal shows, Barb seems to tend to play more poppy melodic songs. Shiv seems to be the most edgy/experimental, although there's a lot of overlap between all the djs. Is this DJ taste, or a reflection of shift-time, or all in my head?
I like the new Rainer Maria, although it is quite a departure for them so I can see why others wouldn't. The first track off the new cd is soooo good. I hope that's the next one that gets played. And someone keeps playing Rainer Maria and Rilo Kiley either back-to-back or close to each other. Whoever it its, keep doing it!

Yes, I wholeheartedly agree. I love Rainer Maria and Rilo Kiley. Go girl bands! I have a friend who has been bugging me to listen to Rainer Maria forever, and the older stuff I've heard has just been OK, but the song that's in rotation right now is really good.
Just thought I'd post something positive to balance my earlier verrrrrry negative post. I"ve been in a nasty mood of late.
When I used to be a dj in college, I found that I didn't think 97X played enough indie rock - because of my constant access to EVERYTHING at our station. But now that I don't have that access anymore, I totally rely on 97X to introduce me to newer stuff....but there's still stuff I've never heard on 97X that I'm surprised they've never played. For instance, one of my favorite bands has always been Cub. To my knowledge, they have never been played on 97X. Nor have any of their later reconfigurations....most notably, the current one - The Beards, which also features Kim from The Muffs. So, sometimes I wonder how these decisions get made.....Are some bands TOO indie for 97X? I find even Gridloxx has a certain programmatic bent to it that doesn't quite jive with my girl band power pop indie band leanings..... like it's more harder rock indie bands. Does anyone else find this to be the case, or am I just rambling incoherently?

i don't think bands are *too indie* for 97X but maybe its more of a logistical thing. there have been quite a few records that have come out in the past few years that were absolutely amazing (imo) but were left untouched by 97X. maybe its poor marketing on the labels' part, maybe the 97x staff hasn't heard the particular record, or maybe they just didn't like it. theres so many factors involved in playlists, that i'm surprised they come up with something consistantly good as often as they do.
that said, my least faves are: coldplay, the donnas, audioslave, zwan.

first, thanks for listening. i don't know if you listen consistantly every week, but i do attempt to change things up. i was relying heavily on older indie stuff for a while but have since been playing lots of new material. sometimes it's mostly long instrumentals, or maybe short punk songs, all new stuff or old faves, you never know... i do bring a lot of my own collection with me that 97x doesn't have and i would suppose that's mostly because those small pressings, labels, etc, are just not sent to them.

gonna put my vote on Electric 6... it sounds like a new-wave song gone horribly wrong. I'm not complaining tho... its a small price to pay for being able to listen to a wider variety of styles and songs, better than just about anything the other so-called "alternative" station plays.

Didn't see this in the thread yet: the list of Heavy, Medium and Light rotation songs on 97X :
http://www.woxy.com/play.shtml
Ick to "Hurt", "Clocks", "Bring Me to Life", "Like a Stone".
The song getting airplay currently which I like least is one whose name I don't know; I don't think it's in heavy rotation yet. It's the one with the sample of someone saying, "Are you ready?" and a crowd responding. Same sample, played about 25 times during the song. Bleh.

honestly, i can't find one redeeming quality about the band (audioslave). and this is a "band" that was grandfathered in based on previous efforts from the current members, not at all on the quality of the material.
of course, i don't blame the minds behind this money pit, it had success written on it from the start.

I completely disagree. They were in 2 different bands and i don't bleieve that they were happy with where they were, so they disbanded. They got together to form a really good rock band different from what they were. Don't go by the schleprock songs you hear by them on the radio, their CD is good. Even you don't agree that they're talented and not corporate inflicted only....
They're still no denying that Cornell has one of the best voices of all time

Not to beat a dead horse or anything (well, if it's already dead what can it hurt?)
I guess I neglected this thread, but...
I can't stand the Streets either! The first time I heard the one song (if that's what you want to call it) I thought it was some sort of weird annoying commercial! (obviously that wouldn't be the case on 97X, but whatever)
Subsequently, everytime I heard it after that I actually had to shut off the radio until I thought it was over. That sounds harsh but it is actually the truth!
I couldn't have just changed the station either because I have the dial super-glued to 97X!
The more recent song by the Streets isn't quite as anoying as the one before but it still causes problems with my anger management dilema.
Don't get me wrong, I love 97X.:p And The Streets are the only songs that they play that I can actually say anoy me.
Ahh, that feels better already.

i still don't believe this band would be anything had not ratm and sg been good bands. face it, practically everyone on the rock planet was excited about the rumor of this lineup getting together. shit, i was. when dreams became a reality, everyone lined up. and then i heard the wretched single. god, it was terrible.

nope, the 2nd single (or whatever it was) was just as bad. then i heard the whole album dripping with mediocrity. so i'll say it again- i can't find anything about audioslave thats even remotely worthwhile.

Well it does seem to be that Mogwai gets played at least once per show. ;)
I have always wondered, what are the qualifications or conditions upon a band being played on Gridloxx? It is surely not as clear cut as the themes of the other specialty shows.

Evanescence gets my vote.. hands down.
There's many songs I don't particularly like, but I can understand why people might dig 'em... but Evanescence makes my skin crawl & it surprises me that 97X even plays it: let alone enough to make me want to vomit when I hear that voice.
I like Jurassic 5, but I'm soooo sick of hearing it. Atari is a dead sound & needs to go away, but what the fvck do I know...
...97X still kicks my ass.

I think redmeg was probably talking about "Rapture" by Pedro the Lion, where he says, "pity that it's not my wife." There aren't enough words in "House of Jealous Lovers" to describe anything in detail! And I do agree, it is damn catchy.

1. Why does it affect you emotionally if I don't like the Streets?
2. I most certainly do NOT work hard. That's why I'm all over these boards.
3. I've heard the album that "Let's Push Things Forward" is from.
4. I'd rather listen to Jawbreaker, thanks for asking.
5. I don't consider him rap. He may very well be doing a heck of a job at whatever it is he does.
6. I can respect the urge to make music. I don't have to respect the people. They haven't done anything that makes me, specifically, obliged to.
7. "Great" is an opinion, kinda like "fucking terrible"...y'know?
8. I brought him up because he has been (and most likely will be again) on the heavy rotation list. And I really don't like him.

Personally, I love the Streets, but if one can't understand why others would listen to them and hear nails on a chalkboard, you need to get your head out of your *insert stinky body part*.
They have to be one of those rare bands where, if you love them, you really love them and if you hate them, you really hate them. Not much in the middle ground.
That said, anyone who disses Winger is getting a swift kick in the *insert stinky body part*.

I think you'd do well to note that it's amazing that a bluegrass band made up of very low twenty-somethings, would be inspired enough by a band like Pavement to do a cover and release it as a single from an album that has much more material on it that appeals to a larger segment of their usual listening audience.
How many up and coming country/bluegrass artists are going to admit to or recognize the influence of bands such as Pavement, Toad the Wet Sprocket or Radiohead to their fan base which is made up of people who've never heard speak of any of those bands.
I have nothing but respect for the song and the band, and I find your admonition of it as sacrilige to be completely without merit.

Word. I agree with kwyj, mostly. The last half of that last sentence was a little harsh, though.
There's so much negativity in this thread. Before anyone posts anything about hating 97x music anymore, I'd suggest the following. Go to your home stereo or automobile and hit "Seek" until the display reads "102.7." Now, turn up the volume and listen, for say, 20 minutes. Is that enough Metallica, Limp Bizkit, and Creed for you? Are you now ready to jam pencils into your ears? Good. Now ask yourself, "Is that Ranier Maria/All Amercan Rejects/Nickel Creek/etc. song really that bad?" I'm guessing not. Sure, there are occasionally songs on this station that I don't like, but it's one hell of a lot better than any of the alternatives.

I was just joking around, I've heard much worse lately. I haven't heard any other Nickel Creek songs, so for all I know they are a wonderful bluegrass band. I just don't like this song. I guess it just particularly caught my ears because, as I mentioned, I haven't heard many Pavement covers, and also the fact that I really adore Pavement, so there doesn't seem to be a lot of sense in covering them to me. For me, most covers are useless unless they bring something exceptional to the song, rather than just a simple homage, like Pavement's bland cover of Killing Moon. I will agree that it took guts to do it and that any Pavement lover can't be all bad;p

I came to this thread with one specific purpose. and that was to say that my least favorite song in (heavy) rotation is that friggin' Electric Six Danger! High Voltage song. it was kinda alright but now, god, that song grates on my nerves!
So Juliana, whenever you and the Danger! High Voltage song have your 10, 000 babies I'd like to meet them all and say hi one day but I don't think I should be doing a lot of babysitting or anything.
Also, on the Nickel Creek thing. I am smitten with these guys and girl. They are all so cute and I always loved the Spit On A Stranger song. Especially live, they got the crowd to sing along at the bogarts show. I think that has a lot to do with why I love it so much. And I've seen them do a bunch of fun covers at their shows. Taxman and Smells Like Teen Spirit. Yay! They're so cute!

yeah, im gonna have to agree on the donnas. they are terrible, even to cock rock's standards, and lets face it......cock rocks standards are lower than FOX's standards for reality TV series. the lyrics are beyond bland. not to say a song has to have deep complex schemes to be enjoyable, but i dont even find them listenable at "lets have fun and get drunk" music. they play "take it off" about 6 times a night on the top 40 station we listen to at work.

wasn't the first one enough? why prolong the torture?
That is the first one. They just started playing another song from the album though. I do not remember what it is called.

But it's not really a DJ Shadow project; it's a De La Rocha project. I can understand how more would and should be expected, if it were a DJ Shadow thing with guest vocals by Zach.
Oh well. I think it's quite good.
i see your point and a good one it is. still from the shadow perspective it's annoying but from the de la rocha view i can understand and it doesn't seem quite as bad. i just don't think it's a good mix that's all.
makes me wanna hear drums of death.

I liked "Seven Nation Army" when I first heard it. Now I think if I hear it one more time I am going jab a pen in my eye. Not because it's a bad song, but because I've heard it like a million times. That happened to me with "Honestly" by Zwan. I like the song, it just got overplayed.
oh and "Hurt" by Cash. :dodges bullets: :)

I love Power-Pop. I love Adam Schlessinger. I love Fountains of Wayne.
And yet I cannot stand Stacy's Mom. It's horrible. I have no idea why I hate it. It's not like it's a big departure in sound for FOW. I should be loving this song, but almost within the first 15 seconds I heard it I had an immediate gut reaction of "This sucks."
Is it number one on the People's Choice Countdown? Because every time I have that visceral "This sucks" feeling the song goes to number one. It's uncanny.

I've heard it a million-and-a-half and still dig it

This I totally agree on though.
Other beefs:
Blur: the donald-duck voice makes me reach for the button to turn on my cd player
All-American Rejects' "Swing,Swing" and any Evanescence make me roll my eyes.....
But the kicker for me is by Grandaddy "El Caminos in the west"
I HATE THAT SONG!! I DEFINATELY turn off 97x when I hear that one. It would even make the gang from Happy Days go "WTF?"

You are not my brother anymore. :p
I think this is a great feel-good summer song. Plus it cracks me up cuz when I worked indie music retail there were two dudes there who were totally into milfs. They coulda written this song.
I agree with Eyeball on the Evanessence songs though--the girl has a good voice but they really get on my nerves.
The song I normally switch off if it comes on is "Righteously" by Lucinda Williams. I really like Lucinda, but she really really pours on the hick accent in this one. Argh, it's like a family reunion or something.

I'm not sure why Blur used that annoying voice on Crazy Beat. It makes me sad, because I love them so much. I still watch the new video, though, because Damon and Alex are so byooootiful . . .

Dave Gahan's new song sucks.
But I really like "Glue Your Eyelids Together". So it all evens out.

Anything by the Foo Fighters or Chili Peppers. These God Awful bands seem to always be in heavy rotation. I just wish they would both go away. The Queens of the Stone Age are next on my poo poo list if I have to hear them again today.

I love the white stripes, Foo Fighters, and Red Hot Chili Peppers...but I get so sick of hearing them on the radio. Maybe not so much White Stripes, but if I hear the beginning to In My Life one more time....who know's, just stay away.

Well, I didn't find out that tidbit of info until I was already sucked in but he's got other qualities that outweigh the affection toward stinkin' park ;) and to be fair, he does have some taste in music (he digs massive attack, daft punk, tricky and a few others) so it's just a matter of time before he's converted...he does have 97x programmed in on the stereo in all his vehicles :D
