I'm considering taking a position in Nashville, TN. I only briefly visited once. Anybody have any opinions about the city, night life, music scene, etc.?

Thanks for the input!

1 word: conservative

Haven't been there in a long time. I had a friend from college that moved there with her husband. From what I gathered from her....finding friends with common ground is key. But I think that goes for anywhere honestly.

Here's their weekly mag: Nashville Scene (http://www.nashscene.com/) and the Tennessean (http://tennessean.com/) (which I think has a better Entertainment section--go figure?). Good luck!

Nashville's a great city, conservative yes--but you're in the bible belt, go fig (it's also a touch less conservative than cincy, has better public works programs too). My sister's lived in Nashvegas for the last 2 1/2 years and loves it. There's a small, but growing rock scene there (the country scene is kinda dying, everyone's moving to austin--so says my sis). LOTS of great restaruants, arts programs (shakespeare in the park, symphony (i vote for this in part b/c my sis sings with the orchestra chorus), the libraries all have auditoriums where they hold puppet shows, etc), and the people kick ass for the most part. Very clean, pretty city.

Thanks for the info kc and c.e. Nash doesn't sound too bad. Any opinions or info on outdoor activities there? Like hiking/camping, canoeing, rock climbing, skiing, etc.
Know the name of any night spots I can actually look for on my next visit?
Towns with developing or changing music scenes can actually be pretty interesting. Looking forward to it!

here you go, a few to get you started (with commentary from my sister):

Buffalo Billiards is fun but a meat market.
Mulligans is neat-o.
NV is for the dancing crowd (I hear it's lame though)
Exit/In has reopened so you can go there (this place is fun--live bands and such).
Beer Cellar is a great place, smoky but great

Thanks Jeff. Thanks again cuddly, U R awesome! Wouldn't that be cool if by some freak of chance I ran into your sister and somehow figured out... that you were her sister?

(that might not make sense, but you get the point, right?)

Heck with the job offer! Now I want to take a road trip down there just to check these places out.

Thanks again,
I.B.

Wow! That's kind of weird and ironic!

That might actually be a cool idea J.R. We should think about it. How about sometime after Mardi Gras. I'll see if anyone else is interested.

Well, I got recruited for a position to work on an anti-bioterrorist project at VUMC. It is a great offer but, I still haven't completely decided.

Any pertinant thoughts to convince me either way?

Anyone else interested in a road trip???

Vandy is a "great place to be a man"???

Yeah, It seemed pretty impressive to me.

I think a weekend road trip would be cool. It won't be for at least another few weeks, but I'll let you know. :D I think Johnny Royale is pretty interested as well.

Are you and your sister really twins cuddly?

Later,

Yep IB my sis and I are twins, identical at that :D it's fun to walk through my sister's branch (she works for nashville public libraries) and have people get all confused over who's who...

Playin the twin game.... You're EVIL cuddly! hehe.

Was it fun growing up with an identical twin? I bet you could play some interesting games with people. I would love to hear any stories?

My sister is actually pregnant with twins (not certian if their identical yet).

You can settle a little confusion that we were wondering about.
Do identical twins have identical fingerprints???

It was fun growing up with a twin, had a built-in best friend and playmate...we were truly evil too. Had an old co-worker of ours turned totally neurotic b/c he thought we were talking about him telephathically (long story, can explain it further if'n you want). To answer your question though, twins do not have identical fingerprints...my sister and i have the same pattern on each fingertip but they are opposites (they move in reverse of each other). Our dental x-rays, heartbeats (and murmurs), sleeping patterns/behaviours are all the same though...used to freak my folks out when they'd pass by our rooms at night we'd both be in the same position dead asleep...

Your sister's gonna have a lot of fun regardless if they're identical or fraternal twins...they'll be a handful but there are twin societies throughout the states which help new moms cope and give great advice...I hope she's got a lot of energy stored up, she'll need it! :)

*snicker* sure thing IPFS.

My sis and I earned the nickname "giggle twins" in second grade due to our uncanny ability to look at each other and spontaneously start giggling (this nick follows us still today). We got older and worked at a grocery store (wegmans for those upstaters here) and were in the same department. One of the runners couldn't tell us apart without help so we'd tease him by switching nametags on him, etc. But, inevitably he'd be walking by or in between my sis and I when one of these spontaneous giggle fits would occur--so he (being extremely paranoid) assumed that we were talking about him telepathically. It got to a point where we decided to set him up, so on one of the busiest days of the year, we decided that sometime during the course of the day one of us would get said runner to pass a message to the other one--and the other would come up with some sort of rebuttal. Our shifts were nearly over when the runner comes up to me (I was on register 4, my sister was on the other end at #22) and says "Your sister asked me to tell you to stop singing, it's givin her a headache." I reply "My singing? Tell her to stop whistling, it's driving me insane!" He looks at me, shrieks, and runs to the end of my register--hyperventilating, shrieks again and runs away. I fell over laughing on my register and couldn't move or breathe for 5 minutes...he never teased us again. :D

Um Wegmans. Got arrested in a Wegmans. Damn that shoplifting.

Last year at UMF I wsa smiling and making eye contact at Cuddly and she was looking at me like she didn't know me from Charlie Manson (white man dancin) turns out it was her equally foxy sister.

aw honey, it's all good. i'm glad your sis enjoyed what i said, she'll see the fun of it all soon enough ;)

you've never met any identical twins? i'm kinda surprised about that, there were 8 or 9 sets of identical and fraternal twins in my high school (was something in the water methinks)...plus, our mom's a twin so we grew up around it.

Actually, the town I'm from is pretty small. My high school graduating class was 83. I think there were twins in the class about three years ahead of me, but I didn't know them. I think inbreeding is more common than twins back in that PA town.

I actually have a student right now who is one of a triplet, but only 1 of them is identical to her. I'm just waiting for her to play some sort of trick on me.

Thinking I *might* go to Nashville for a couple of days this weekend....

Can anyone recommend a particular part of town where I should stay/look for lodging? I want to be able to amble around, eat at a few nice places, check out the shops and the bars, etc. Is this an ambling kind of town or will I be required to drive everywhere?

cuddlyevil
06 Jun 2003, 08:24 AM
Depending on how close you get to downtown, you can amble--I wouldn't amble alone though. There are a few hotels right in downtown (off Chruch street and the like), stay away from Northside, you could stay in Murfreesburo and probably have a short drive to downtown, you can also stay near the airport which is maybe a 10 minute shot to downtown...try using citysearch. Oprymills is a nice area too, got a sweet ass hotel there and a nice uppity mall too :) (take Briley Parkway off I-65, can't miss it).

If you're going this weekend, BE CAREFUL--it's Fan Fair weekend so the hotels will more than likely be fairly packed and driving around may be a issue, so if at all possible have someone else drive :)
