I thought it was a funny idea for a minute, and then I realized how bad Fox screwed these girls. They can't turn him down, that's obvious, without looking like gold diggers. What if they just don't want to marry a guy who's been lying to them since the day they met? The whole thing's a blunder of logic. I'll watch the last episode, though.

I don't know if it needs to be reinforced that there are definitely greedy shallow people in this culture. That's a given but to put it up for entertainment value I think is perhaps even more trashy. Fine- you can call it reality - but its also a bait and switch and to do it when people are at their most vulnerable is mean-spirited. Sounds like some gun-shy producer types got the idea to show all women are "golddiggin' b**ches.":(

How can programs who put people in elaborately staged and orchestrated situations where they are often deceived, misled, and manipulated be called "reality" television?
Let us coin another moniker for this brand of show. I'm open for suggestions, but my idea is "crap-o-vision".

I have a feeling they won't be told until AFTER they say yes or no. Not every show on tv has to have value. I think the bachelor is boring so I don't watch it...if this isn't fun I won't watch it. crap or not...Mondays are boring so what the hell.

i'll be watching. along the lines of IPFS comment, what if the guy and gal really do fall in love, where the woman, if not lied to, would love him despite his income? she's going to be hurt because she was lied to, not because of the dough. should be interesting, but i do think the chicks are getting yanked on this one. i'd feel like shit lying to someone like this dudes gonna have to do.

I don't care what you think of me.
I loved the show. It was so silly and horrible, but also so wonderful.
I'm not into the stupid reality shows, I watched the 1st survivor, and the first um, Real World up until Hawaii, because I was young and stupid, and of course I was in love with Bands on the Run. That said, I really REALLY enjoyed Millionaire tonight. My sisters sat there and loved every second of it.
Some of the girls are really likeable (The subsitute teacher girl, the one with curly hair who looks like Evan's sister...), some of them are total bitches (Heidi), and it'll be really interesting to see it play out.
I can't decide which would be better TV. Seeing him pick a nice girl who doesn't care about the money, or seeing him pick Heidi and her walking away when he tells her.

I wasn't making a judgment about anyone watching this show... I watch The Amazing Race, which is also crap. But as long as you know it's crap going into it, I think you've got a much healthier outlook on the show than most of its audience.

Until last night, it never occurred to me (nor to the viewing audience that gathered at my place to watch the show) that this guy would have to be able to PULL OFF the lie for 7 episodes. At the beginning, we seriously had our doubts that he could make it through the first episode without rousing suspicions. Then it occurred to us that the women are SOOOOOO worried about how they are coming off on camera, oops....I mean how they are coming off to Evan, that they don't take a moment to notice that he's fumbling and stuttering.

I thought the butler was a hoot - especially at the end when he was sitting by the fire with his snifter of brandy - very 'Masterpiece Theatre' like. I found the show entertaining even though I think Evan is really stupid and the girls aren't that much smarter. He was on GMA this morning and poor Charlie Gibson had to interview him - if he isn't already, I'm sure he'll be back on his forklift soon. :)

I don't feel sorry for any of these girls. Some of them are so wrapped up in themselves and this money that it will be fun to see all these "princesses" figure it out in the end. Forget the fact that this show was made for everyone to see that all these girls are mostly interested in his "money"....after watching the first episode, I think that it makes fun of this Evan guy more than anything.

Do you think any of the girls will catch on? I mean it took him two minutes to say his middle name - that was hilarious. But I'd think if those girls had any brains they'd be a little suspicious of the whole thing, because it just seems so overblown.
One of the girls said he was like Gaston - which seems pretty fitting since he is not very eloquent and pretty oafish. I didn't really think about the fact that he would struggle (both literally and ethically) with lying to the girls, but that seems like it will be a big factor in the show.

I loved it. He seemed a good chap, dumb, but good. Way too tall. Felt bad for all involved though - it's hard for me to watch that stuff. The women were made to be idiots - I'm sure they have more redeeming qualities than those edited to show...
69, I watch Amazing Race when I get a chance too. That's a fun show. Makes my heart rate go up, so it's like combination exercise and laziness.

Not too bad. Hated the bitchy blondes, and I liked Zora and a couple of the others. Yeah, I thought about the fact that Evan will need to lie the whole time, and several of the girls said that "they would like him, as long as he doesn't lie to me," and they "valued honesty above money." Oops. It seems like he needed to come up with a cover story, or at least come up with a middle name ahead of time.

I was ranting on the show, not anyone who would check it out. If I was I would have to include myself. After talking to a wise girl friend of mine who said it might be an eye-opener for some guys, I stumbled onto the show (really) and watched a bit of it. I still have trouble with those type of shows, and this show didn't prove me wrong. The "moments" seem so plastic and unreal like when he was greeting the girls, and then later I turned back and he was giving out the necklaces -- its like stopping to check out a bus accident or something. I agree with DB -- I thought he was an odd choice for the handsome millionaire. He seems dumber than the rocks he's used to digging up. Anyways, I also think the women who are up to that kind of show probably like the attention, though I don't think they deserve deception. I must say that the whole ruse : that love might triumph over money; can't exist when it starts out with a lie.

I'm kinda glad I don't get fox on my rabbit ears so I miss this. I've got to see the commercials for "the bachelorette" my god, that's enough for me.
On one hand, I pity the girls because they could honestly fall for this guy and the betrayal they're gonna feel when they discover they've been lied to will hurt like a mofo. But, on the other hand, they're desperate enough to go on tv looking for attention ((opps, i meant to say a husband) I stopped watching the bachelor this season at the first episode where the 24 year-old said that the show was her last chance at landing a man) so in a way, they deserve everything they get. I admit I thought the idea priceless when I first saw the commercial, but the more I thought about it the more it looks like just another crappy vehicle for a network to get ratings...

JM is just as goofy as The Bachelor/ette, so I doubt I'll continue watching unless there's nothing else on.
But... did anyone else catch those spots for the other FOX show starting in March: Married By America? Do they ever learn their lessons?
Who am I to judge.... I'll be camped out for Celebrity Mole and at least the first couple weeks of dreadful singing on American Idol.

This show provides a great service to us because it gives us a sense of what it was like living in the days of the decadent decline of Imperial Rome. This reality tv stuff is the Roman Coliseum writ large for millions to see instead of thousands.
The subtext of JM is rather disturbing -- it is a deeply misogynistic portrayal of women as conniving, one-track-minded gold-diggers, which in turn taps into some of the unfortunate fears and stereotypes perpetuated in our popular culture.
The setup really is brilliant in its own way, though -- women love it because it taps into their catty sides that love seeing other women get humiliated & upbraided, and men love it because it provides a great fantasy of hot chicks vying for some chuckleheaded, goofball guy who is not all that different from them.
That said, I am helping to hasten the very decline I bemoan, because I watched it and enjoyed it for the cheezy-fun it was.

The 2 Joe Millionaire rumors I've read go something like this:
1) He's actually an heir to lots of money - Marriott family or something.
2) When the final girl is selected, she'll have an opportunity to bow out and have nothing else to do with this purported $50M guy - and Fox will pay her $1M.
Oh, and if you type "joe millionaire rumor" in google, this is the third link that comes up:

That would be something huh? But would 'reality' be enough to interest many people? Isn't the whole set-up kind of like a Barbie scenario? Handsome Ken doll, Castle, more money than some could spend? And then there were those gals at the opening of the show who said, "this is like a dream come true!"
I also saw some of SNL and it was hilarious.

Greedy? Say It Ain't So, `Joe'
Daily News, New York
First they were dumped by "Joe Millionaire." Now the spurned women of Fox's red-hot reality show are worrying about how they'll lose their image as moneygrubbers.
"I'm concerned about what people think of me," said contestant Dana, 26, a secretary from Los Angeles who, like the others interviewed for this story, refused to give her last name. "I'm still single, and I think the gold-digger label will be hard to shake."
Dana was one of 20 women who flew to France last fall believing they were going to meet a multimillionaire bachelor. It wasn't until weeks after the show was taped that the women found out the man, Evan Marriott, was a construction worker.
Over the weekend, Fox executives defended the ploy, saying it's all part of being on a reality show.
"I think that when people get involved in these unscripted shows these days, they know they're in for a ride," Gail Berman, Fox's entertainment president, told the Television Critics Association.
While the women involved may not have been thrilled with the outcome - or with being on the wrong side of a practical joke - Berman noted that many of them have been involved in postproduction publicity, suggesting they were satisfied with the series.
"It worried me, after I found out about the premise of the show, whether I'd ever get a date again," said Amanda, a 28-year-old flight attendant from Arizona. "I hope nobody takes the show that seriously."
People might not be taking it seriously, but millions are watching.
Over "Joe Millionaire's" seven-week run, they'll see Marriott narrow the field to one woman. In the final episode, he'll reveal his true background.
What may be funny to viewers wasn't that funny to all the players.
"I felt a little betrayed," Dana said. "I didn't find out until I got a call from producers that the show would be about `the golddiggers meet the ditchdigger.' But I knew going into it that reality TV is all about surprises and humiliation."

Also, his slip up saying he was on a bulldozer 2 weeks ago (see above)

I think the worst thing about the show is the guy!
They should have picked a geek.
Geeks are hot!

Okay, so I apparently have to watch this thing next week....:(
Anywho, I've heard there's gonna be some huge surprise at the end, so I've got an idea of what I'd like to see. If anyone's said this, I apologize for tramplin' on yo' flava.
Scenario: Joe whateverhisnameis lets the girl know that he's not rich. He asks her to marry him. She decides one way or the other. Once it's all said and done, Fox gives the dude a coupla million bucks. This way, if the girl said yes, she's not a moneygrubber and the happy couple are rewarded. If she says no, she inadvertantly kills her chances of being with the guy who is now, in fact, a millionaire. And he's rich enough that he can go away and leave us alone forever.

THAT would explain the bad acting!!! Because he's PRETENDING to be a poor guy who is pretending to be a rich guy!!!
It must be. It just feels....right.

I was let down lastnight as well. How dare they! Anyway, these are a few of my predictions for next week:
joe is really a a millionaire or heir to millions ( like suprise, that would be the most obvious scenario)
joe tells the girl, hey I'm not a millionaire, but then when given her time to decide and she turns him down; he will then say hey well I'm really a millionaire (exactly what you were saying IPrayForSound)
one of, if not both of the girls know he doesn't have the money and a, they don't care or b, they know he's heir to money...or some whirlwind ending.
But you can bet on one thing, I'll be there watching it, getting suckered in, just like I did lastnight

That's an hour I'm not getting back. And 2 hours next week? Who do they think they are? Survivor?
Yeah, we mentioned earlier that he might be a millionaire (or an heir to bucks) His last name is Marriott, after all. I thought it would be an even better twist if SHE was the millionaire. I guess we'll find out.

I got a feeling bondage blondie has a few smackers in her back pocket - - - just not as much as she'd be getting.
I have no clue about Zora. It's difficult to know how much editing we are seeing and how much is the true selves of these women...
I still want to see Zora tell all to kiss her pretty ass and walk off before he picks...
but c'est la vie I guess.

I just don't see Evan being a millionaire for real. Why? It would've come out on the internet by now. There are a lot of armchair sleuths out there who would've uncovered something like that by this point. Plus, it just seems too easy. They say it's a *shocking* twist, so it'd better be good.
I can't really hazard a guess, though. Could be one of a million things. I don't see the hooches being millionaires either. Remember it started with twenty of them. Do you think they'd all be millionaires? Nah. I think FOX giving him some dough afterwards is feasible, but still not quite a shock. Guess we'll find out next week.
Oh, and I flipped back and forth to the show this past Monday thinking it was the final episode. Bastards.

I've never ever wanted Monday to come so bad.
I've never wished for a weekend to be over.
What's happening to me???!!??
Then, as I watched Simpson's 300 and Married w/Children,
they teased and tormented me with endless commercials of JM.
I've become obsessed with FOX.
IT must stop now.....after tonight.

IPFS - yes you did hit it. I really thought however he would pick Sarah - my reasoning?
Sarah was the safer choice-I think he really liked Zora but would be upset if she said no dice but Sarah really would have walked away which in that scenerio wouldnt cost him anything emotionaly.
But I gave him too much credit.
That being said- aside from cheeziness at the end...this wasnt half bad as far as endings go...
however I am now a bad person for watching this...

I'm glad I didn't waste any time watching this during its run, because last night was a good encapsulation, minus all the filler. I'm beginning to think dreams realy can come true, as long as there are sleazy television execs to lead you along by the nose

Despite the cheesy fairytale ending and how perfectly it ended, I really enjoyed watching and that Zora and Evan matched up - at least for an evening. Chances are, they talk on the phone like once a month now. Or not even at all.
It would have been fun to see what could have happened if Sarah was chosen. Afterall, she was living a pretty nice life in swanky CA. Her face was pretty dang funny when he told her the truth.
It was almost sickening to see how perfect Zora is - helping old people, little girls love her, the mayor is her chum... kitties and horsies and puppies - oh my!

I can't believe how non-chalant Sarah was over that whole "yeah, I did a little fetish modeling."
I'm glad Evan and Zora got together, even though he's a big goon.

A Millionaire's Double Talk
Just how dumb is Evan Marriott?
The star of "Joe Millionaire" did a string of interviews for Fox, and a source at the network tells The Scoop that the editors there had to work overtime to piece together coherent sound bites.
"He was stumbling over words and couldn't finish a sentence," says the source. "It was up to us to make him look like more than an idiot."
Other sources, however, were surprised by how witty and almost articulate the construction worker appeared when doing other talk shows, such as ABC's "The View."
"What happened to him?" noted one poster on a gossip site. "Did he turn smart all of a sudden? It was like watching a different man. Something is up!" (Jeannette Walls Delivers the Scoop appears in MSNBC Living)

Sarah Kozer to Appear in June Playboy
Tue Apr 29, 1:49 PM ET
By The Associated Press
NEW YORK - The first time Playboy magazine came calling, Sarah Kozer from "Joe Millionaire" said no. The second time, she said no again.
But the third time — after receiving unanimous approval from her family and friends — she changed her mind. Now, the reality show runner-up is on the cover of the magazine's June issue.
Kozer said she only agreed to pose for Playboy if the photos entailed no full-frontal nudity. "I was a women's studies major," she said Monday night at a party celebrating her appearance.
This isn't the first time the 29-year-old has modeled; as the Fox romance series was airing, it was revealed that she'd appeared in bondage and fetish films to help pay the bills during law school.
"Joe Millionaire" star Evan Marriott chose Zora Andrich over Kozer, but the two since have split up. The women were among 20 who competed for Marriott's affections under the belief that he was a millionaire, when he was actually a construction worker who made $19,000 a year.
Since the show's February finale, Kozer has been finishing a novel and a cookbook — and coping with the chaos of her newfound fame.
Sipping champagne and surrounded by pals and publicists at a trendy lounge Monday night, Kozer said of the whirlwind, "I don't like it, but I don't mind it."
"If this is the worst that life has to dish out for me," she said, "I can't really see any reason to complain."
couldn't be for the money?
