as stupid as this guy is, he's lucky he only lost $15.

Man discovers friends were NOT looking for him, sues Classmates.com

You know all those ads you see all over the internet telling you that your old friends from high school, or the lonely half-naked girl down the street are waiting for you to call? Yeah, it turns out they're not always telling the truth. But one San Diego man figured that when he signed up for a free Classmates.com account and was then told that his friends were trying to contact him and he could find out who they were by paying $15 to upgrade his account, it couldn't hurt to shell out a few bucks.

But once he did, Anthony Michaels discovered that nobody he knew or had gone to school with was actually trying to contact him. And the only users who had viewed his profile were people he had never heard of.

Most people would probably just figure they were out $15, because it would take more time and effort to try to recover the money than it was worth. But Michaels decided to try to put together a class action suit. Presumably, he's hoping to get more than $15 per user out of this, but the bigger point is that he's trying to get a court to show that Classmates.com used deceptive practices to convince him to become a paying member.

In this time of economic hardship, I'm relieved to hear lawyers are still able to get good work.

I hope he wins. I mean, I think the damages for him and everyone who joins the class action suit should be limited to $15 per user, but the ads are a blatant lie.

Finally relegated the bastards to the junk file. I mean, any outfit that's that anxious can't be legit, right?

Dang, Tracy really doesn't want me... *snif*

I never understood why they didn't just open things up and count on ad traffic. They could have been facebook. instead they just send you crap like that trying to trick you into some nonsense. They suck.

Scha, right! Like she'd ever hook up with a guy with an underscore or a dash in their usernames!!! She told me that would be impossible in Physics class, oh so many years ago.

So back off!!!

I'd love to have that class action. talk about easy money! Let's assume that there are 1 million paid members and you get their $15 back for them, that's 15 million. Atty fees are 5 million. and that assumes you don't get all their monthly fees back too.....or punitive damages for fraud.

of course, there should be a "stupid" penalty on the users for ever signing up in the first place. :)

"Ultimately, this lawsuit has the potential to pave new ground for consumer protection in the world of e-commerce. There are too many services taking advantage of people online, and a harsh ruling could be just what the Web ordered."

this is from the PC World article. and I agree. any company which does have your credit card information should pony up a customer service line for users of said service to call.

got a feeling this is the real reason why the guy is suing. I've had quite a few peeps email me crap from another service that I cannot remember that I was savvy enough to realize was just like classmates.com.

they weren't and got taken advantage of...in fact, our Dean at my current employer got taken. and she's no dummy.

You've made an excellent point. Thank you.
