Vote early, then you can reduce your chances someone will stop at your place. If you insist on waiting until the 4th, expect more canvassing. It's called Get Out the Vote for a reason.

But then your cell phone becomes your "home phone" and the calls start coming. It'll be nice for a while. I've been not answering calls from any number I don't know.
I've been getting a lot of mail lately too, almost exclusively from the democrats. All I ask is that I get no more mailers with this woman's (http://electjanschneider.com/Photo_Ramstad.html) picture on them. She scares me.
Do they even make and sell products anymore? I don't think I have seen any of those commercials in months. It's all political. I don't think it's ever been this bad before. There are so many hot races in the Twin Cities metro area (including, but not limited to, the presidential race, Al Franken vs. Sen. Slimeball, and Michele Bachmann vs. herself) that it is nothing but constant political commercials.

I would like to do that. Problem is what happens in the event of an emergency. During the Northeast blackout of August 2003, cell phones just didn't work. Luckily I had an old phone which came in quite handy. I assume coverage would be better five years later but I prefer not to risk it.

These phone calls are beginning to really irritate me. I have received the same damned messages about 8 times now regarding issue 5, issue 6, Jean Schmidt, and other garbage. I have been letting them all go to voicemail. It is a pain in the neck to have to erase all this nonsense.
I thought having a non-listed number and being on the national do not call list would reduce some of this crap. I guess I was wrong. If one of them calls me on my cell phone, they will get an earful!

twentyshots is right. if you are registered for vote then that is where they are getting your phone number from - so an unlisted number would not help you there.
also, most of them are probably robo calls so giving them an earful is not going to do much good either. write a letter to the DNC and the RNC and complain is probably the best you can do.

Not that the DNC or RNC or the NRA or Moveon.org care after the election.
Robocalls ARE obnoxious, which is why they are illegal in some states (such as MT ... woot!)
It's a shame so many people think this election is important, isn't it? Here they are on a Sunday afternoon, sitting in a stinky, moldy carpet room making calls to people urging them to vote. I see your point, but most of these are automated calls. These suck.
Additionally, I already plan to vote a straight Democratic Party ticket in the first place. Or as I said to a door-to-door campaign representative: "You're preachin' to the choir, man."

Moral high ground, right?

If we understood what Get Out The Vote (GOTV) means, perhaps we'd understand why people are making calls or knocking on doors.
It's very simple. The calling and the canvassing are done simply to locate our supporters AND then to make sure they vote. That's it. In Ohio, we've had over a month to vote. If you are still getting calls....well, it's because you haven't voted yet.
How many times are you going to hit the "snooze" button. Just wake up! :)

Annoying or not, the fact that you've been getting these calls at all means that you are in a hotly contested state. Your vote is being courted by both campaigns. I live in a blue state, and I've not been called once, or have I even barely seen an ad for the GOP opponent. I'm feeling a bit taken for granted. :(
Please realize that you're very important, and your vote does count, whenever you choose to cast it.

Sure it's easier for people, but if it were such an important civic duty then employers and employees would make it a priority. As would civic organizations. But we don't.
I don't understand folks who think it's a duty to vote. As long as three people vote, there's a quorum. This country is about freedom, and as the song says, if you choose not to decide you still have made a choice.
But if you don't vote, don't talk smack about the issues or who won. Pretty simple.

It's YOUR Phone. Barack Obama didn't MAKE you answer it. A person that calls me during a nap is a jackass. But the guy who breaks his nap to answer the phone is King Jackass.:p
Tru dat. Answering the phone is at the bottom of my priority list. If it's important, they'll leave a message. Just because they are calling doesn't give them top priority.
twentyshots is right. if you are registered for vote then that is where they are getting your phone number from - so an unlisted number would not help you there.

you would think my vote was the last vote on the planet. the obama people came to my house 6 straight days. SIX. the first two times they woke my kid, then i put a sign on the door indicating sleeping child inside. they still came 4 more days and left flyers. no mccain and only one local guy came to my house that i know of.
Saturday we had 13 phone calls. 6 obama, 5 mccain, and 2 local. today we had 3 calls so far. one from an obama person who was very irritated that i didnt share whom I support( i got that from my blue collar west side Dad, he never talked politics, wouldnt even tell my step mom who he ever voted for) 1 recording from sarah palin (you betcha! or some nonsense) and one about issue 6.
I have a GIANT stack of flyers ive gotten, i think im gonna hand them to the dozens of people that mob me at my polling place.
today was the weirdest/funniest/creepiest canvassing ive seen. There was an older women in a strange car, sitting in the road looking around. I thought no way is this an another obama person. no way they came for 7 days. no way they are so freaking unorganized that they cant have a sheet of paper with street names on it and place a check mark next to it when they have been there. she got out of her car with the stack of obama flyers. fuck i said not again so i put my sign back up. get this, she ONLY went to the three houses where african american families live and put flyers up. Im thinking "you guys cant remember you came to my house six straight times last week, but you know where all of the african american people are on my street." no way this was coincindence either, she had a list and walked straigh to those three homes and left.
its funny, because really ive never really considered race in this campaign much at all, and i think both campaigns have done a fairly good job not making it a deal either. but to see this today was pretty wild.

I find it impossible to believe that by sheer coincidence none of the white people on my street are Obama supporters. In fact I know several that are. Why were they not canvassed? Im guess its possible, but it certainly just seemed curious.
And how do they know who they are? I had a call the other day from the obama campaign he asked if "senator obama could count on my support." i said i dont discuss that. he said, seemingly ignoring me, "well would you mind if I asked who you are supporting?" and I said yes I mind. he then said "Thank you for your support." I'm assuming he was reading a script and not really paying attention to what people were saying, but did he mark me down as supporting? and if so why was i not canvassed today?
the flyers were the same as most of the ones i got last week, maybe there was more polling info included, but it seemed to be one blue flyer.
look, im glad these people are excited and invloved and have time to be involved, but it just seems really heavy handed. 6 visits in 6 days? i dont know how many phone calls. your post seemed to indicate the callers were possibly identifying who the supporters were, and if that true everytime I told them i did not disclose that info, why would they not record that and continue to call? even your last statement " And we will knock on their doors again tomorrow to be sure they vote." I mean doesnt that seem at all a bit aggressive and heavy handed? what happens if they don't vote? i mean the spirit of this thread seems that some people want to be left alone, maybe some of these folks do to...

Registered voters is a public list. You might not be able to look at the book at the polling location, but you can get the list. That's a foundation of our democracy.
There is an awful lot of things people, young people mostly, don't understand about our system, government, democracy. Understanding these things might change how you view government, and what you vote for. Or not. ;)

At my polling place the only record that I was there and voted is one book that i sign. there is no other record of mine having been there other than the sticker on my shirt. that is what i was questioning. If I was one of these people they were going to harass/canvass what other way would they know if I was there or not throughout the day without looking at that one book to see if i signed. I cant imagine someone coming up to a busy polling location and being allowed to thumb through that book to see who had and had not been there. Ive never seen it happen.
yes I am old and maybe there is something about that I am missing.

No, on second read I'm going to have to agree with you that knowing who voted and when gives me pause. But it's open information.

I would like Sovrana to answer this. Do you go into the polling place and review the list during voting hours?

I cant imagine the old lady that has that book letting potential canvassers from either party look at the book to see if their supporters had signed or not. and especially not multiple times throughout the day. Hell, she doesn't even stop touching the book when she turns it over for me to sign.
and imagine you are there checking in and waiting to sign the book and some seemingly random person comes and asks to see the book and starts thumbing through it. Id be like what the hell is going on and who the hell is that?

Hello, I'm posting because you need to know.... Kay Hagan took godless money, bought godless music, and played it on a godless iPod.
(this post paid for by godless boarders who are responsible for the content of this advertising)
I wrote Elizabeth Dole an email telling her how mean she is to Kay. I voted for Hagan because of it

Sorry, I've been working the campaign all day.
There is a website that offered this information. Volunteers could simply log on and look for the names of voters in each precinct.

I'm wondering when the old ladies at my polling station had the time or the resources to enter that information into a computer during the day. The whole thing is stalker-like creepy.
Oh well, it's all over. My husband can get some sleep finally.
