Screw California
And friends that are never there
And places that they oughta
Pretend that they even care

From a false family, she could light you up
Like a holiday tree in the summer

So lead us there

So screw California
And ice that will never melt
From hearts of the modern
Children of Cicero

From a false family, she could light you up
Like a holiday tree in the summer

So lead us there

California Uber Alles.
If you're referencing the German national anthem, it has always been meant in a positive way. WWII kind of tainted the meaning, but it's more about yearning to bring the different regions together as a country. Germany as a country over all regional allegiances. Still, the first verse is rarely sang because most people interpret it otherwise.

More on topic: Does this mean that California is doing the equivalent of Massachusetts (in 2004) by allowing gay marriage to anyone whether a citizen of the state or otherwise?

I had lots of fun at work rubbing this into the face of our secretary, who once told me that the only thing homosexuality does is lead to pedophilia.

They should all do it. There's no reason not to. Logically speaking, of course.

I'm wondering if California voters can pass an amendment into the state constitution prohibiting gay marriage. Obviously if there's anywhere in the U.S. that could defeat it, California should be the state. But it's no guarantee.

Is she from West Virginia?

I'm little more proud to live in California now.. in about 60 years I'm sure Mississippi will come around a allow gay marriage too :D

Good for Cali...I'll bet the fundies are pissing in their rubber underwear as we speak.

I just wish our government would quit legislating the morality of a overly vocal minority.

they could, but i don't know if there's time to pass a DOMA (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Defense_of_marriage_act) law before it's legal. they'd have to probably vote by referendum to overturn the court decision (is that possible?) and then vote on a DOMA.

My fellow Californians have certainly made election mistakes before (hello Gov. Schwarzenegger), but I'm hopeful they won't vote to prohibit gay marriage. When it comes to ballot initiative, the state is usually pretty progressive. But it's an unpredictable sort of thing. Gay marriage was voted to be illegalized in Oregon, a blue state, but the prohibition of gay marriage was defeated in Arizona, a red state. So...yeah, hard to say.

i don't care one way or another--i've never really wanted to marry anyone, but i bet divorce lawyers all across the Golden State have already started looking for larger homes and faster cars. :|

As I understand it, based on the information http://www.chicagotribune.com/news/nationworld/sns-ap-gay-marriage,1,1723907.story here, an amendment is the only way to trump the court's ruling. And that process is in the works, though the outcome is in doubt.

As much as I support the right to gay marriage, I do worry that these court rulings may actually retard progress on the issue in other states, as voters jump to amend their constitutions even in the absence of threats to existing marriage laws.
