For the 19th year, one of our signature events, the Modern Rock 500, returns like clockwork this Memorial Day weekend. 500 songs, over 30 hours of some of the greatest modern rock, alternative and indie music ever recorded.
To long time listeners, you know what this is about. For newcomers, enjoy an entire weekend of counting down some of the best of the best that the radio station has had to offer in our 25 years as The Future of Rock and Roll.
We'll throw the green flag and start with #500 on Saturday, May 24th at 10am & run thru Midnight, continuing Sunday from 10am to Midnight & Memorial Day Monday from 10am until we reach the #1 song. Shiv, Joe, Bryan Jay and myself are excited to continue this annual tradition for music lovers everywhere, so please join us for the countdown Memorial Day weekend on the main WOXY.com stream.
If you won't be able to hear the live coverage, we'll replay the entire 500 countdown on the WOXY Vintage (http://woxy.com/vintage/) channel sometime in June.
Lemme throw my predictable "Yeeeee-haw!" in support yet another year of the Modern Rock Five-Hundy!
Thanks in advance, woxy, for what will shape up to be a great weekend of music.

Wooohoo!!!
In an effort to make an already enjoyable Modern Rock 500 weekend a little more interesting, I've decided to take bets on this year's MR500 exhibition (http://woxy.com/boards/showthread.php?p=1349617#post1349617).
Come join the fun.
For you (us) Cincinnatians, WVXU is pimping the Monder Rock 500 on their website with a nice flash banner...

This starts tomorrow morning :)
Crank up those HD radios, those of you who are local!
I can hear Mike Taylor's pre-race warm up show of the PA speakers here at WOXY.com Motor Speedway. It is time for me to find a seat in the stands and await the start of this year's MR500.

Here we go! :)
#500: Feist - My Moon My Man. Wow. For such a high placement on the 97 Best of 2007 (#2), coming in at 500 might seem like a disappointment to the Feist camp.
In fact, this raises a specter of doubt about the impact of 2007's qualifying artists.
One things for sure, there is a lot of MR500 still ahead of us. It's still anybody's race.

I'm confused as I haven't heard any of the normally MR500 laps, etc. Has it really started? (I wasn't listening directy at 10 AM to hear the introduction.)
If this really is it - it's very different from past years. This should be an interesting day.

though feist isn't my cup of tea, i think your disappointment is registering too early, since she could hit very high up with different track.

I love how there are songs from the early 90s, such as Taillights Fade, that I don't remember from the time. It's only with time that we've come to appreciate them.
It makes me wonder what overlooked gems we've had the past few years.

Well, at least I got the artist for #500 correct.
I feel like Scott Goodyear.

that is impressive actually........given the sheer number of possible 500's.
Well, at least I got the artist for #500 correct. I feel like Scott Goodyear.
Hmm. I see that, sorta.
It dawns on me that I did not specify artist, or song, or both in the wording in Question #4. My intent was artist and song, so if you were vying for that actual prize, I guess I would have awarded you 20 points on that one.
Good work none the less.

Or not. I can't even second guess accurately. :D
I can see now I vastly under estimated the presence of "97 Best of 2008" songs in this years MR500. I've unofficially counted two and we are not even 30 laps in.

Without going back and verifying with the list, I think that 6 tracks from last year made it to the countdown...but I could be wrong about that.
The one thing that we did do this year was try to account for some bands that have never appeared on the countdown, who have become some of our most played artists since leaving the FM in 2004. One of those was heard earlier, with Cat Power's "Cross Bones Style". Even though that song is 10 years old, Cat Power had never made it to the countdown and, like a few others you'll hear this weekend, certainly deserved to be represented in the 500!
Anyway, I hope you guys are having fun listening to it. I've had it on since 10am and am still just a little relieved that we got it all done in time. :-)

damn, that was my original guess for the "betting" thread. i bumped it up to 8 after looking at the 97 best of 2007 list again. oh well, hopefully you're wrong. :p

I'm glued to the stereo - and debating about whether or not to be social later today or not. This is always my favorite day of the MR500 as it has the most surprises/moments of nostalgia. Once you get into the top 150 or so, you know you'll hear those songs regularly.
Thank you for all your work on this. Back in college I'd hear the promos, but it wasn't until grad school that I was actually in Oxford Memorial Day weekend.

And if anyone wants any fun trivial facts, let me know. I've spent way too much time over the years tracking the songs (thanks to various folks who have compiled some of the 2003 and earlier ones).
For example, Julian Cope was a regular in the 1990s editions of the MR500.

If I only had the missing lists of the 1990s. They're out there - people have mentioned having them, but I haven't seen them.
I'll stick with songs already discussed by the DJs, so I don't spoil any of their info. So far the largest drop from last year has been Tori Amos with Cornflake Girl, going from 287 to 484.

So Mike gets #150 down to #100 or so. Then Joe presumably gets #100-#50 or so. And I assume that Shiv gets the final 50? I thought I heard them say that Bryan Jay would even do a little bit of this countdown? I haven't heard him yet (on the portion of that countdown that I"ve heard, at least...)
