Scientists have created a human embryo with three parents in a breakthrough they hope could lead to effective treatments for a range of serious hereditary diseases.

Researchers from Newcastle University presented their findings at a medical conference at the weekend, a university spokeswoman said on Tuesday.

The IVF, or test-tube, embryos were created using DNA from one man and two women.

The idea is to prevent women with faults in their mitochondrial DNA, which can lead to some forms of epilepsy as well muscular and developmental disorders, from passing diseases on to their children.

Mitochondria are tiny power packs inside cells that provide their energy. Faulty genetics can mean mitochondria do not completely burn food and oxygen, leading to the build-up of poisons responsible for more than 40 different diseases.

The Newcastle team believe these diseases could be avoided if embryos at risk were given an effective mitochondrial transplant. The process involves in vitro fertilisation (IVF) and the subsequent removal of the egg's nucleus. The nucleus is then placed into a donor egg whose DNA has been removed.

The resulting foetus inherits nuclear DNA, or genes, from both parents but mitochondrial DNA from a third party.

The technique has so far been tried only in the laboratory and the embryos created were destroyed after six days.

Stiff opposition to the technique is likely from critics of embryo research who fear the creation of designer babies.

The research was presented to the Medical Research Council Centre for Neuromuscular Diseases conference in London on February 1-2.

But that's the material they use to trace hereditary lines! If they allow that to be skewed our tracking process for parentage will be back to "who knows" land!

Not only that, the Mitochondria are the source of the force! Everyone will wanna be Leia's baby.

does this mean that marriage can finally be between one man and two women?? we'll have to adjust a lot of state laws right away.

Du(d)e, those are mitichlorians, not mitochondria. Tooooootally different ;)

I’m all for science - but there is a reason for infertility - some genetic material is just not viable - circumventing faulty dna via artificial means just carries the defect forward.

You can see it happening in dogs – some lines have awful fertility issues – breeders use transcervical artificial insemination & even implantation of seamen directly into the uterus– their fertility problems never go away; their foundation stock can’t reproduce. I have a friend who spent $10K getting a bitch bred – she did produce 3 pups each of them had clinical issues & were neutered & placed as pets.

I do understand how traumatic it is for people who want their own children, but sometimes it just aint meant to be. Science is a good thing – but too much can mess things up. Not everyone can afford the procedures – so it isn’t the end of the world.

So is this a valid argument for a three-way?

I'd rather have a five way.

I am all for people not getting a neuromuscular disease. It ain't exactly a walk in the park. But true, maybe some people just shouldn't try to reproduce. We have too many people as it is.

I dunno, that's what I keep thinking of when I see people toying with making more perfect beings.

That and Corinthian leather.

Not really, because the mitochondria and its DNA stay separated from the nuclear DNA it should fix the problem for all future generations.

for that trait - but, and I'm going back to dogs again - there is seldom one thing wrong. Usually there is a combination of things that aren’t right – nature stops it in its tracts so it doesn’t flow to the next generation. Science fixes fertility – then the other stuff ya can’t see comes to light.

The friend that spent $10K produced puppies that weren't health - a grab bag of stuff that had nothing to do with fertility.

Sometimes it just isn't meant to be - it’s great that science can do something so sophisticated & i'm certainly not going down the Bible road - but to me, moving mitochondria around sounds a bit much.
