I just received this in an email from a friend and thought maybe some of you might be interested:

The message below, a letter from Frances Beinecke urging
concerned Americans to oppose the Bush Administration's plan to
exterminate wolves in the northern Rockies, was sent to you by
http://www.nrdcactionfund.org

Dear Friend:

The Bush Administration has just issued a disastrous "License to
Kill" plan that could trigger the extermination of half the gray
wolves in Wyoming and Idaho, starting as early as October --
unless we stop it now.

The U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service is accepting public comments
on this cruel proposal only until August 6. Please register your
opposition right now by going to:
www.nrdcactionfund.org/wolfaerial

Our best hope for blocking this "open fire" order is to generate
a tidal wave of public outrage and protest . . . so please sign
your Citizen Comment immediately.

The Bush Administration wants to treat wolves like vermin,
instead of an endangered species that has staged a welcome and
dramatic comeback from the brink of extinction.

In preparation for these mass killings, the government has
already purchased planes and helicopters capable of gunning down
entire packs of wolves in minutes.

Their goal: To immediately kill up to 700 wolves in Greater
Yellowstone and central Idaho.

Our goal: To stop this horrific proposal in its tracks -- by
generating 200,000 pro-wolf Citizen Comments by the August 6
deadline.

Please help block the License to Kill by expressing your
personal opposition while the Bush Administration is still
taking public input.

Submit your Official Citizen Comment now -- and shield the
wolves of Greater Yellowstone and Idaho from the coming
crossfire -- by going to:
http://www.nrdcactionfund.org/wolfaerial

Sincerely,

Frances Beinecke
President
NRDC Action Fund

Let's get down to brass tacks, gentlemen. If I was informed correctly, the clock is ticking.

Wolf populations now exceed their numerical recovery goals under the Endangered Species Act in the northern Rocky Mountains of Montana, Idaho, and Wyoming. However, before delisting can be proposed, each of the three States must have a State management plan approved by the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service.

“State and Tribal management under scientifically sound wolf management plans provides effective wolf conservation and will allow the States and Tribes to gain valuable management experience in anticipation of delisting,” said Ralph Morgenweck, Regional Director of the Service’s Mountain-Prairie Region.

Interest over the proposed rule, known as a 10(j) rule under the Endangered
Species Act, for wolf management in the Northern Rockies stimulated more than 23,000 comments after it was published in March 2004. The final rule announced today is as a result of input and review of comments from the public, States, Federal agencies and Tribes.

Looks like this is nothing new and is being blown out of proportion.

Wolves are mean anyways. They deserve to be shot. Every time I put on my red hood, grab my basket of goodies, and head over to grandma's house, they're always pestering me. I say shoot 'em.

the part that pisses me off royally is ranching on public land

ranchers have strong political ties to the machine - so what if your family has been ranching on public land for generations - it doesn't belong to your family - it belongs to the US & one less cow spewing out green house gas is a good thing

stop public ranching & let the wolves take it over

if we still had them in Ohio the f'ing deer wouldn't be so bad & the coyotes wouldn't be as much of a threat as they are becoming

A friend lives in Wyoming (Ohio), and received a letter in the mail stating that they were going to take action on the wolves that have been seen around the neighborhoods. Action includes both education and....sharp shooters. That's right, in yuppy Wyoming, the flack jackets will be coming out. Oh my.

i really doubt they are wolves, I'd be more inclined to believe they are coyotes or coyote crosses with domestic dogs

a bitch in heat is a bitch in heat, they don't need to put a bag over a bitch's head - they get 'em from behind

they are closely related - it works

seriously - they are becoming a problem - hybrids are usually bigger than either parent & don't have all the natural fear of people

The things we've done to the balance of nature are idiotic. Why are there so many wolves? Because they have so much to live off of. What happens when they run out of food? The next year, there are less.

It's not a hard formula.

It's like spraying to kill bugs & then scratching your head at the amount of trash you have left to deal with. It's like, killing off all the pigeons & wondering why the streets are so messy.

Kill the wolves, then kill the deer/elk, then kill bears, which eventually kills everything.
