I was watching the Everything's Duckie edition of Pretty in Pink this weekend. I realized that many of the artists have become staples of what I consider modern rock. For reference:
Pretty in Pink soundtrack includes
"Pretty In Pink" by The Psychedelic Furs
"Thieves Like Us", "Elegia", "Shell-Shock" by New Order
"If You Leave" by OMD
"Bring On The Dancing Horses" by Echo & The Bunnymen
"Do Wot You Do" by INXS
"Left Of Center" by Suzanne Vega
"Please Please Please Let Me Get What I Want" by The Smiths

I know I listened to this cassette all the time in high school. It was the first recording I owned with any of those artists, some of which I now have many more albums (The Smiths, INXS, and New Order).

Twenty years later, have there been any other soundtracks that tap into the modern rock sounds of that time period as well as this one did?

Interesting.
I can think of a couple seminal tunes from 80s flicks, but no movies that prolific.

Singles hit on the grunge thing pretty well -- Soundgarden, Pearl Jam, Smashing Pumpkins, Alice in Chains. As I recall, this was pretty early in the days of grunge and I think it's fair to say that that movie helped define the term.

Trainspotting, Repo Man, maybe?

Sixteen Candles was pretty top notch and zeitgeist-y, too.

While The Breakfast Club has perhaps the best theme song, it was a bit more instrumental.

Anything in the past 10 years?

the soundtrack to Pretty in Pink was one of my first musical loves, and still is. John Hughes had a knack for pairing the right music with his films, and its a shame he's out of the buisiness.

jonathan demme had a pretty good finger on the pulse of modern music as well.

Not to mention ('cause you didn't) Chris Isaak. Even though it isn't one of his better songs...
