Our old friend John Curley (Staggering Statistics/The Afghan Whigs) reached out to us this week because he's been working at Ultrasuede Studios with THE STEMS. This Australian band released their debut disc "At First Sight, Violets Are Blue" in 1987 and broke up shortly afterwards. The disc was named one of the 100 Best Australian Albums Of All Time by the Oz edition of Rolling Stone! They played Little Steven's Underground Garage Festival in August 2005 and are currently working on their 2nd full-length album right here in Cincy!

All of this to say, John is going to swing them by this afternoon for a last-minute acoustic session and we're thrilled to have the opportunity to have them drop in. It should start live around 4pm eastern here on WOXY.COM.

Cool.
Joe, ask them if they know The Grates personally.
Patience is in love with me...she just doesn't know it! :p :D

Ask them if they know that Australia was a penal colony.

Awesome news!! I feel in love with The Stems back in the late 80's and still love their one and only release. Actually still have a cassette copy somewhere!!

Love the Lounge version of 'Mr. Misery'.

Looking forward to the new stuff!! Can't wait to a live show!

Wow. I remember playing the heck out of "At First Sight, Violets Are Blue" when I worked at a community radio station in Australia in the mid-80's (Triple R in Melbourne). They were one of our favorite bands, even if they were sandgropers (term of endearment for folks from Western Australia)

For those who don't recognize their music, it's a bit like a fuzzier, more Ramones-like version of the Hoodoo Gurus. "At First Sight" is their classic single.

I wonder what they think of the current range of Australian bands (The Drones, Morning After Girls, John Butler Trio, Ben Lee, etc.) and whether they measure up to the exciting times back in the 80's!

Hmm, maybe you were the one playing "At First Sight" on Triple R that fine day when I was visiting the University of Melbourne and first heard the song. Actually went straight over to the campus record store (reminded me of the one in the movie 'Pretty In Pink') and bought the previously mentioned cassette. It was 88 or 89.

Any chance you have an idea what happened to the Australian band Crash Politics?
