Heads up toon heads -and I know there are a few here.
This is the list that has Termite Terrace buzzing:
The Toon List (http://www.cnn.com/2002/SHOWBIZ/TV/07/30/cartoon.characters.list/index.html)
How did your favourite character do?

Ralph Wiggum is missing (they can get rid of Lisa Simpson)
Also, Hank Hill is a better choice than Bobby Hill.
And where are the Animaniacs?

Pardon my ignorance, but who the hell are:
21. Gerald McBoing-Boing
32. Tom Terrific
and
34. Bill
????????
Gerald McBoing-Boing? I think that was the name of a slutty ex-girlfriend's father.
and at 18, Top Cat? You're kidding me....

I ignored the list after seeing Tom & Jerry at #50. It's a shitty list. I wonder how old the people were who made this list?
How about Chilly Willy & Droopy? Yogi? Foghorn? This list blows.

That list is CRAP!!! I have no idea who some are. And I agree, Tom & Jerry should've been WAY the hell up there.
And where is Beaky Buzzard? :p

At least Ren and Stimpy made the list.

These lists are usually pretty stupid, but this is the absolute worst one I've ever seen. When these people are putting these lists together, I'd love to know what they're thinking when they say, "Gerald McBoing-Boing? 21. Next!" I'm a pretty knowledgeable toonhead and I have never in my life heard of Gerald McBoing-Boing.
SpongeBob SquarePants and Angelica Pickles in the Top 10? Um, no. Gumby? Claymation not animation, you fucking morons. If we're including claymation, then Wallace and Gromit would be in here as well. Top Cat at 18? Tell me one kid under the age of 20 that's even heard of Top Cat. Just one. Bill? Who the fuck is Bill? Tom and Jerry at 50? Jesus. Do people actually take TV Guide seriously? My guess, this list was put together to see how many toonheads they could piss off. Seriously. The editors probably just gave the assignment to a couple of writers and said, "Run with it." The writers probably sat there and said, "Let's see what we can get away with." That, or they're cartoon fans and just went solely based on their own preferences.
I do not acknowledge this list.

As much as I dig SpongeBob, he's not ready to be in the top 10. Beavis and Butthead are no longer popular, therefore they should be on down the list. I agree that Tom and Jerry, as well as Wile E. Coyote and the Roadrunner should be higher.
Cuddly, Underdog is #23, which I think is a decent spot for him.

In the immortal words of John Mac ...."you cannot be serious!!?"
Tom and Jerry at #50? C'mon most of those toons listed couldn't hold Tom's jock strap.
Bugs bunny at #1...there's a shock! I would have been happy had Tom and Jerry not been listed in such a disgrace of a list!

I did an image search on Mr. McBoing Boing and it turns out that he's a Dr. Seuss creation. Apparantly he was introduced about 50 years ago. I don't recall ever seeing or reading about him and I'm a 70's Seuss Kid.

My personal unlisted favorites are Peter and Stewie Griffin (the father and baby of the Family Guy)
Memorable quotes in their discontinued honor:
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Lois: Peter, what did you promise me?
Peter: That I wouldn't drink at the party.
Lois: And what did you do?
Peter: Drank at the pa-- ...Whoa! I almost walked into that one.
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Stewie: Dammit woman! You've impeded my work since the day I came out of your wretched womb!
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Peter Griffin: You know those Germans; if you don't join the party, they come get you.
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
[Riding a circus elephant.]
Peter Griffin: Look Lois, the two symbols of the Republican Party: an elephant, and a fat white guy who is threatened by change.
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Stewie Griffin: [To ticket agent] Now look here...
[looks at agent's name tag]
Stewie Griffin: Jo-LENE! I have an army to raise and I must get to Managua at once! I require a window seat and an in-flight Happy Meal. BUT NO PICKLES! OH, GOD HELP YOU IF I FIND PICKLES!
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Lois Griffin: You should spend some time with our kids, Peter. And with me.
Peter Griffin: Uh, what could me and you do together?
[Lois giggles]
Peter Griffin: Lois! You've got a sick mind!
Lois Griffin: Peter, I'm talking about making love.
Peter Griffin: Oh! I thought you wanted us to murder the children and harvest their organs for beer money.
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Peter Griffin: Oh, you people can kiss the fattest part of my ass!
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Peter Griffin: NOOOOOO! Silly rabbit, Trix are for kids. Damn longears, trying to take Easter away from Jesus. Anyway, what was that you were saying?
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Stewie Griffin: Damn you, brocolli!
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Brian Griffin: Ah, if my memory serves me, this is the physics department.
Chris Griffin: That would explain all the gravity.
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Peter Griffin: Brian, there's a message in my Alpha Bits. It says "OOOOOO"!
Brian Griffin: Peter, those are Cheerios.
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Baliff: Do you swear to tell the truth, the whole truth, and nothing but the truth?
Peter Griffin: I swear... you bastard.

"Bill" is THIS Bill . . . . . . .
:o I'm just a bill.
Yes, I'm only a bill.
And I'm sitting here on Capital Hill.
Well, it's a long, long journey to the capital city.
It's a long, long, wait while I'm sitting in committee,
but I know I'll be a law some day
At least I hope and pray that I will
But today I am still just a Bill
I'm just a bill
yes I'm only a bill,
and I got as far as Capital Hill.
Well, now I'm stuck in committee
and I'll sit here and wait
while a few key Congreemen discuss and debate
whether they should let me be a law.
How I hope and pray that they will,
but today I am still just a bill
I'm just a bill
yes, I'm only a bill
and if they vote for me on Capital Hill
Well, then I'm off to the White House
where I'll wait in line
with a lot of other bills
for the President to sign
and if he signs me then I'll be a law.
How I hope and pray that he will,
But today I am still just a bill.
(Congressman): "He signed you Bill! Now you're a law!"
(Bill): Oh yes!!!

I didn't have major problems wit the list, but agree that Animaniacs/Pinky & The Brain should have been included. Why not create a Top 100 Toons?
Gumby is stop-motion animation. It's animation, just using a different media (cels vs. clay). Being a HUGE Gumby fan, I am glad that he made TVG's list, that was only a ploy to sell their crappy magazine with three different "collector's" covers.

Yeah, there were some great ones left off. And the combinations weren't what I was expecting. I mean you have Fred and Barney together. Then Wilma and Betty were excluded (unless I missed them). I'm with DogStarMan--"where's Bender?"!! And my alltime fav, Marvin!!!!

Perhaps a better list would have been The _ _ _ Greatest Cartoon Shows of All Time?
Did I miss Bob Clampett's Beany & Cecil? Those of you not familiar with this series should rent the DVD, it's LOADED! Clampett was a Warner Bros. director (he created Tweety Bird!).
Beany & Cecil started out in 1949 as a live TV puppet show called "Time For Beany". Among it's fans are Frank Zappa, Albert Einstein, and yours truely.
More Beany & Cecil info HERE (http://www.geocities.com/Area51/Cavern/3144/bc-index.html) :D

If "Daria" is included, why isn't Ben Katz? IMHO, Ben is a far more interesting character than Daria.
Yup, this list sucks. And I agree with whomever said that Spongebob shouldn't be in the top 10, at least not yet.

Where's Peter Griffin ?
or the chopper-riding werewolf "Wolfie" from the Groovy Ghoulies?
Lenny and Carl ?
Powdered Toast Man ?
or the brown and white sarcastic dog from Foghorn Leghorn ?
This was obviously just another popularity contest, with no depth.

This TV Guide list was obviously put together by uneducated toon fans! :o It's just like if you were to ask Britney Spears to come up with the definitive Top 50 rock bands of all time list.
I've got one of the issues sitting in front of me (the Charlie Brown/Angelica Pickles cover), and I'm seriously hoping the 50 characters named are not ranked in order, but rather thrown together randomly. I mean, come on, Bugs Bunny is #1, but Mickey Mouse is FRIKKIN' #19?!???!? If anything the both of them should be placed back to back.
Now that I look at it, this list is worthless. But I guess it's adequate for the general TV viewing public (the general public who rely on TV Guide for EVERYTHING television). You put absolute crap in there like 'Arthur' which is hideous to watch, but needs to go in there because, screw the quality of the animation, Arthur is an 8-year-old aardvark who goes to school... that's great and wholesome for the kiddies. Same with 'Fat Albert'... unbearable to watch, but the cartoons had a message.
This list totally disregards many of the classic characters, and is rather showcasing numerous "NOW & OF THE MOMENT" cartoons... like Powerpuff Girls, Pikachu, Cartman... Daria?? I enjoy Powerpuff Girls, but where is Dexter? Pikachu has always been a cute little Nintendo character, and I admit, I own 'Hey You Pikachu' on the N64  but we coulda easily had some Tex Avery character in place of him! South Park is hideous, Daria would be better as a live action sitcom... wait, is Daria even on MTV anymore?
Oh well, it's just a TV Guide list. If it's in TV Guide, it's gotta be important! ;) hehe.
This is, by far, the worst list of cartoon characters I've ever encountered. Completely horrible. I can't even begin to comprehend what the compilers of this list had to have injected into their bodies to think this list even remotely correct (Drain-O?).
Why has everyone seemingly been OK with Homer Simpson being listed at #2? No don't get me wrong I love the Simpsons, but let's face facts the Simpsons doesn't have the best animation in existence. Again, let me repeat I love The Simpsons, but Homer #2 all time? Give me a break. Rocky and Bullwinkle, 3? Beavis and Butthead, 4? Yet Mickey Mouse is 19, Daffy Duck is 14, and for the love of god Donald Duck is 43? Winnie the Pooh and Arthur are 'greater' and TOM AND JERRY?!?! AGAIN WHO COMPILED THIS LIST? Obviously the quality of animation was not a requirement, Josie and the Pussycats, FAT ALBERT, watching cartoons like that is the equivalent to racking your eyes with broken glass and nails, and that isn't an exaggeration.
I'm sorry, things like this ENRAGE me in every way I can be enraged. The gall TV Guide has posting a list like this.
Gerald McBoing Boing, I've seen a lot of talk about him, classic Dr. Seuss character, as a semi-obsessed Dr. Seuss fan I like him, but he isn't in the top 200 cartoon characters.
OK, here is a list of characters that I am SHOCKED to see were left off this list:
Screwy Squirrel, The Wolf, Snow White, Spike the Dog, Woody and Buzz, Droopy, and those crazy dancing skeletons in the first Silly Symphony. There are so many more but, I'm just so upset I can't think of them.
Perhaps I wouldn't get so upset if this wasn't TV Guides list. TV Guide, as much as I hate to admit it, is a respected magazine. Stupid people will believe that these lists are true. What a joke.
Seattle93

No Huckleberry Hound or Quick Draw McGraw.
No Eek The Cat.
No Mister Burns.
No Spawn.
No Pink Panther.
No Mr. T.
And those go along with the other previously mentioned gripes.
What we have to remember is that the people who compile these lists tend to skew towards the more recent/popular as opposed to what many of us would prefer - a list based on some type of merit, be it influence on future animation, quality of animation, technical achievement, socio-political impact or some type of personal bias like my list of omitted characters.
On top of that, not everyone is going to be happy with any type of list or compilation of this nature. This reminds me of the debates over Rolling Stone's "Greatest Albums" list or the VH1 "Greatest Artists of (insert genre here)" lists.
I don't pay too much attention to these things, especially coming from TV Guide. The only thing they really do is piss people off. Besides, who really cares what TV Guide has to say about anything? (I personally don't know anyone who subscribes to or buys the stupid thing.) Trying to make sense of a list like this is like trying to make sense of MTV Video Award winners.
(BTW did y'all see what Christina Aguilera was wearing?!?! WOW!)

i know i'm coming in a bit late on the conversation, but...
this list is a big stinkin' pile of doodie.
charlie brown and snoopy in the same stretch? that shouldn't even be allowed. those 2 were on totally different levels. charlie can suck it, but snoopy rules me. and where the mother fuck is woodstock?
i see space ghost on there, but no brak and zorak? SG is easily the weakest character on the show. they could have at least picked his evil twin, tad ghostal.
there were also plenty of other simpsons charcters they could have used to take the space(s) of bart and lisa.
jackasses.

What the hell is wrong with you people? Not one vote for Shaggy (Scooby-Doo)? Animaiton quality not withstanding, Shaggy is one of the all time greats. Zoinks!
The list just proves that the purveyors of pop culture are bleeding morons. How the hell is Tom & Jerry at the Bottom of the list? No Woody Woodpecker? Why is Pikachu even ON that list?
I'm glad that the Diznee characters placed low; I could never stand their sugary sweetness. Bugs would play mind games and Tom & Jerry would beat the crap out of eachother....classic fun!
That "The Family Guy", "Dr. Katz", "The Tick" and "MightyMouse" failed to place is a travesty. And I really couldn't expect T.V. Guide to appreciate "Aeon Flux" or "Star Blazers"
Pity.
