The guy that stabbed me in the subway did it with a soft, tender smile.

Just kidding of course. When I went to NYC, we were walking the streets and looking around (evidently looking lost) and an old guy asked us if we needed help with directions, and that impressed me. But I didn't see too many rude people other than the guy that tried to cut in front of me in line.

They feature Letterman's top ten from the previous night on the news radio station I listen to during my morning drive to work. Last night's subject was about this friendly city stuff. Too funny. :D

I want to know which cities were considered, because I've been to New York and I've been to several other much more friendly cities.

Language is a major issue here, BTW. If the research was conducted entirely in English, one would expect New York to be more friendly than Paris.

NYC was the only US city they surveyed. Not that I don't think New York is a fantastic city (it's one of my favorite cities in the world), but I wonder if there is a cultural bias at play here. For instance, when I lived in the Netherlands, there was an older man who lived in my neighborhood that I would see on the street at least once a week. I would say hello when we walked by each other because that's the standard of politeness where I was raised. One day he said to me, "You always say hello, but I don't know you." He thought it was weird. He wasn't being rude, it was just a different cultural/social expectation.

haha, that is something i'm not looking forward to this summer. walking down into a nyc subway station in the summertime is like walking into hell, it's soooo hot and humid.

so i like the hot stinky subway breeze too and i really like when the doors of the car open and i feel like cold cold air of the a/c, it's a great feeling. another thing that's bad is when you accidently walk into car that doesn't have the a/c working.

i'm always on the lookout for those cars when the trains pulling up. if all the other cars have a bunch of people in them and then there's a lone car in the middle that's completely empty, steer clear, that's probably a hot car.

I thought about that too, but I thought it would be an even more complex point. So I thought the language was a pretty straightforward reason why the research could be biased. But I definitely agree that politeness standards would influence the whole thing. Maybe Pequin lost points when people burped at the tables in restaurantes, I dunno. :p

That said, I haven't been to NY in a long while, but I really liked it, obviously. I'm just a bit weary whenever the "best ____ in the world" tag is used.

Parisians have as bad of a rap as New Yorkers, when for the most part it's not warranted. Parisians are wonderfully nice people... I've had the same experience in Paris someone mentioned in New York .. standing there with a map and someone always asks if you need help. There are dicks everywhere you go, and there are really nice people too. It just depends on who you run into that day. However, since soosh brought it up, I spent four days in Holland : Den Haag, Utrect, and Amsterdam... Amsterdam people were not awesome compared to the other two cities, but they were still more awesome than strangers in Milwaukee (the meanest city on the planet ... just barely beating out Chicago). In Den Haag, I thought they'd have to pry me out of there... everyone was soooo gorgeously wonderful ... plus the tomaten soupen ... shut up.

Yea, I was impressed with NYC. But you can't compare it with Texas, where people are really nice to total strangers.

I've been to Amsterdam, Sushi. And they were so nice, a perfect stranger asked me if I needed any cocaine. That sure was sweet of him.

Just kidding, I loved Amsterdam and Holland, its beautiful, outside the "red light" district.

Totally agreed. In the days before I went to Paris, I was soooooo nervous about how the natives would treat me and my from a phrasebook French. Thankfully, I was so relieved to find that the lionshare were really friendly with a few casually indifferent folk (usually at busy tourist sites, so I credit them for not being outwardly hostile.) As I recall, I never ran into one nasty person during the time I spent there.

I never had a problem with anyone in Amsterdam, Brugge or Brussels when we went, but they didn't seem to go out of their way to be very friendly. Just indifferent.

Still, hands down, the nastiest city I've ever been to has been San Fran. I was stunned. Maybe I caught it during Hippie Come Down Week or something, but everyone I ran into seemed to be looking to cause some drama.
