If the World Were a Village of 100 People

Someone posted this in one of the groups on couchsurfing.com. Kinda interesting.....


If we could reduce the world's population to a village of precisely 100 people, with all existing human ratios remaining the same, the demographics would look something like this:


The village would have 60 Asians, 14 Africans, 12 Europeans, 8 Latin Americans, 5 from the USA and Canada, and 1 from the South Pacific
51 would be male, 49 would be female
82 would be non-white; 18 white
67 would be non-Christian; 33 would be Christian

80 would live in substandard housing
67 would be unable to read
50 would be malnourished and 1 dying of starvation
33 would be without access to a safe water supply
39 would lack access to improved sanitation
24 would not have any electricity (And of the 76 that do
have electricity, most would only use it for light at night.)

7 people would have access to the Internet
1 would have a college education
1 would have HIV
2 would be near birth; 1 near death
5 would control 32% of the entire world's wealth; all 5 would be US citizens
33 would be receiving --and attempting to live on-- only 3% of the income of "the village"

I've seen this before. I remember though that the one I saw said something like 10 (or 15) would be homosexual.

And on a related note I'm getting sick of seeing the 10% homosexual numbers. That study was flawed, big time, yet still gets quoted.

Mark's right it is still interesting. While the exact estimates for this "village" are not accurate, they are in the ballpark, and they raise interesting questions. Whether or not you like it Euro, the West does control/consume/hog the vast majority of the world's resources, for better of worse. That is important and will continue to be.

Yes if you read the Snopes blurb, the statistics are definitely not far off from accurate. They are much closer to the truth than I would have anticipated them to be.

When they determined the percentage of people in the continent of Asia (60%) does that include Russia? Russia is in Asia. In fact, the former Soviet Union consists of the majority the landmass of Asia. Are all Russians to be considered "Asian?" And if so, does that make them non-white?

Although a grossly oversimplified version of the population today, there's no way the world would ever get anywhere close to this. There could never be "1 from the South Pacific."

PLEASE! If the world was a village of 100 people, there would be NO NEED for the internet. And JUST TRY to tell me that all those problems would exist if there were only 100 people to take care of.

All I see is a numbers game that does no good to anyone.

I definitely agree it's interesting. I do wonder what the use of the internet would be if there are only 100 people and all in one village too. It would be quite useless when you could see them actually but then again, it'd be perfect for those who want to avoid actual contact. I wouldn't want to say this is accurate but doubting that only one person in the village would have a college education seems quite silly yet at the same time, somewhat hard to believe.

1) Hillary Clinton would be insisting it takes the whole stinkin' lot of 'em to raise a child.

2) I would volunteer to be its idiot...that'd be a fun job, I think.

3) It'd be fairly slow and plodding right up until the surprise twist at the end where the blind chick stumbles into the park ranger office where M. Night Shayamalan is making a cameo and we all realize "Holy fuck...it's not 150 years ago, it *TODAY*!!!"

4) It would have 1 construction worker, 1 cowboy, 1 motorcycle cop, 1 Indian of the Native American type, 1 soldier, and 1 leather queen. And for a brief, crazy time like no other, their ironic parodying of standard American alpha-male types and over-the-top campyness would make them the kings of disco.

Alright, so where did this person get the college education? I would hope that none of the other 99 people were the professors, or that person's degree would be meaningless.
