View Full Version : 2006 Modern Rock Redux Thread
The Big Crunch
30 May 2006, 11:26 AM
This is the 2006 Modern Rock 500 thread for those of us who are hearing it for the first time this week at work because we didn't have a chance to catch it this weekend.
We will ignore trying to find the results and act as if it is occurring for the first time.
I have great memories of enjoying last year's 500. It was about the time I started to really become active on the boards. It made me actually look forward to coming to work.

I've been listening off and on today. I can't tell if I'm listening to the normal random cycle or if it's really the 500. Is there a list or numbering system somewhere that I'm missing?

Boomtown Rats - I don't like Mondays
A little something about Boomtown Rats
The Boomtown Rats were at a US radio station for an interview when the story of Brenda Spencer came over the news wire. The 16 year old California high school student made headlines when she grabbed her father's gun and opened fire on her school from a house across the street, injuring eight students and killing the school's principal and custodian. When later asked why she'd gone on the shooting spree, she responded "I don't like Mondays."
As a loud mid '70s rock band, the Boomtown Rats were (respectfully if not completely accurately) branded punks by the media. As the Sex Pistols and the Clash became the voice of young London punks, The Boomtown Rats carried the flag for the youth of Dublin. After their debut album saw respectable sales in 1978, they recorded "I Don't Like Mondays," their most successful and most enduring hit despite the fact that many US radio stations refused to play it.
The Boomtown Rats' popularity never rose beyond their successes of the late '70s, and after the weak sales of their 1982 album "V Deep" the band had reached its end. Singer Bob Geldof embarked on a solo career, and while not finding pop huge success he has made his mark on pop culture by playing the lead role in Pink Floyd's The Wall. His shining moment came in the mid '80s, co-writing Band Aid's "Do They Know It's Christmas" with Midge Ure and putting together the highly successful Live Aid concert.

I think “Walk On The Wild Side” is one of the most over-rated songs in rock history. Really, it’s pretty fucking weak. Not even close to being the best song on Transformer.

I would chalk that one up to Violent Femmes - Blister in the Sun. That song always makes my ears bleed..... Ugh.
Wouldnt have thought Been Caught Stealing was top 10 worthy either, Jane Says is definitely better.
Wanna Be Sedated Though....Thats hot!

The Smiths - How Soon Is Now
A solid song to round out the 500. Nice.
Well gentlemen (and ladies?), its been a pleasure. Sorry I joined the posting party a little late, though I have been listening as much as I could.
Anyone got a smoke?

I actually think most of the Top 10 songs are fairly overrated.

"How Soon is Now" is a great song, but I just don’t see it as Number 1. Then again, I don’t see last year’s Number 1 (“Love Will Tear Us Apart”) as being that great either. “London Calling” deserved to be in there, so did “Teen Spirit”. Maybe “Anarchy In The UK”. How did “With or Without You” not make it? Hell, I think it was The Guardian that recently named “One” as the greatest song ever written, and while that’s baloney in my mind, it certainly seems a better tune than “How Soon Is Now?”. The only U2 song in the Top Ten was “New Year’s Day”, I’d put “With or Without You” above that. “Creep” by Radiohead at something like 6 or 7? Are they serious? Oh yeah, no REM in the top ten? I dunno.
Off the top of my head, here's my top 50:
1. Smells Like Teen Spirit – Nirvana
2. Radio Free Europe – REM
3. London Calling – The Clash
4. With or Without You – U2
5. Sweet Jane – The Velvet Underground
6. Anarchy In The UK – The Sex Pistols
7. I Am The Resurrection – The Stone Roses
8. No Woman No Cry – Bob Marley
9. Three Days – Jane's Addiction
10. New Year's Day - U2
11. I'll Be Watching You - The Police (if you're going to include the Police, then how do you put "Roxanne" over "I'll Be Watching You"?)
12. There Is a Light That Never Goes Out - The Smiths
13. Alive - Pearl Jam
14. Summer Babe - Pavement
15. One - U2
16. Bizarre Love Traingle - Joy Division
17. I Wanna Be Sedated - The Ramones
18. Blister In The Sun - Violent Femmes
19. Teenage Riot - Sonic Youth
20. Bastards of Young - The Replacements
21. I Know It's Over - The Smiths
22. Here Comes Your Man - Pixies
23. How Soon Is Now - The Smiths
24. Just Like Heaven - The Cure
25. Loser - Beck
26. Common People - Pulp
27. In The City - The Jam
28. Boys and Girls - Blur
29. Alex Chilton - The Replacements
30. Gloria - Patti Smith Group
31. Come As You Are - Nirvana
32. Personal Jesus - Depeche Mode
33. Radio Radio - Elvis Costello
34. Gigantic - Pixies
35. I Wanna Be Adored - The Stone Roses
36. Game of Pricks - Guided By Voices
37. Unsatisfied - The Replacemenst
38. Sunday Bloody Sunday - U2
39. Freak Scene - Dinosaur Jr.
40. Enjoy The Silence - Depeche Mode
41. It's The End of the World as We Know It - REM
42. Marquee Moon - Television
43. Psycho Killer - Talking Heads
44. In My Eyes - Minor Threat
45. Where The Streets Have No Name - U2
46. Lust for Life - Iggy Pop
47. Paranoid Android - Radiohead
48. Slack motherfucker - Superchunk
49. Cannonball - The Breeders
50. Live Forever - Oasis

and they didn't chart any Green Day because....? If you're going to give a list of historical modern rock, ignoring Dookie is unbelievable. Last year, there were THREE Green Day songs (Longview at #26), and this year they've disappeared.
Primus dropping significantly? The Smiths at number 1?
And I will continue my yearly complaint of the 500 not recognizing Rage Against the Machine or Tool.
As a whole, this year's list was somewhat subpar, though it is still by far my favorite thing WOXY does.

If I expanded my list just a wee it, then "Basket Case" would be in there, maybe at 51. Yeah, no Green Day is a bit odd.
Tool should be in there, but I don't know how high. Rage should have one in the Top 100.

Did 97X ever play Tool? I really don't remember that they did.
