I've been listening to it in bits and pieces so far. I'm hearing so much great stuff that I hadn't heard in a long long time (the Buggles, Thomas Dolby, etc.), and also like that some newer artists made the selection as well (Yeah Yeah Yeahs, etc.). It will be on when I'm home this weekend, that's for sure!

You can get a sampling of what's played in the v-BAM thread. It's great, as usual.

really ?

and it's called modern rock 500 ? Semantics. No matter. Thank you for the explanation.

I hope that Yeah Yeah Yeahs are on it and of course Tom Vek, though I don't know if that's considered 05 or 06. Shiv ?

Funny, I was just wondering about that too.... Anyone?

Not to break the train of thought about the longest song, but my 17 year old son and I are groovin to the tunage today! We have kept a list of the songs we like most and will go to I-Toons later to do some shopping. I have built my classics collection by listening to the Modern Rock 500 for many years.

I always root for an REM song to take the top prize and they often have. Nirvana often does, too...let's see who wins this year. :p

14. "Loser" - Beck

9. "Creep" - Radiohead

so, i guess, it's a little bit better to be a creep than a loser

I'm sure I'm not the only one who feels that I've heard this song more than a few times too many in the last 15 years. It can drop out of the top 50 as far as I'm concerned.

i cannot agree with dumping Nirvana out into the middle. i mean, i really think i would be fine not hearing teen spirit until next year's 500 and i wouldn't miss it- sure it has been played to overkill on rock stations everywhere else - but it has to be judged on it's historical merit. Cobain was nearly obsessed with musical influences like the Pixies, Melvins, Killing Joke, Sonic Youth, Mudhoney, etc. so Nirvana is right there in the mix when it comes to the evolutionary chart and i cannot begrudge them for hitting it big. it also is not their fault that they spawned a bunch of shitty rock bands like puddle of mudd.
It is hard to remember now but in '91 Nirvana really was hitting their stride artistically and woke a lot of people up with their energy.

i don't know. i probably babbled on like this in a grunge thread somewhere but i saw bands like Nirvana, Soundgarden and Alice In Chains as really good bands who lived their music (and died in some cases) and were at odds with their own success.
so in some ways it ceases to be alternative (there's that word again) but that is definitely where it came from......it just outgrew it's definition.
