Memorial Day signals the beginning of the travel season when many Americans take to the road for vacation travel or weekend trips away from home. Driving safely and taking the proper precautions can mean the difference between having a fun trip and becoming a statistic. Many Americans will die in motor-vehicle crashes over the Memorial Day weekend. There will be increased scrutiny by law enforcement officers over the holiday period to check for speeding, drivers under the influence, and to check adherence to use of seat belts.
Whether your Memorial Day trip is across the country or just across town, remember to:
Plan Your Trip - Allow time for frequent breaks and rest stops, especially when driving extended distances;
Check Your Vehicle - Make sure your vehicle, including all safety related items and your tires, are in good (safe) operating condition;
Buckle-Up - Ensure that ALL passengers (including children) are properly secured/buckled up before moving the vehicle; and
Drive Defensively - Not only do you need to drive safely, you need to be aware of your surroundings, the driving conditions, and the other drivers around you.
