That would look great over the mantle, should you want to freak out your guests in a very subtle way. :D

Nice. I've seen his name before, but never explored his art.

I'm not sure what's more frightening, the girl or the bunny.

I LOVE LOVE LOVE MARK RYDEN.
I was just hemming and hawing yesterday about how I might come up with the money to buy one of those prints.

yea - got an e-mail for a sale - $200 for a poster - I'll just admire. I know that is cheap, but too much for me

It's right on that ever-fluctuating line between just out of reach and the higher end of affordable. I have been collecting the postcards, mini books, exhibition catalogs, etc. over the years, though.

You know, I've noticed that there are A LOT of artists these days taking a whole lot of "inspiration" from Ryden. And by inspiration I mean that they are totally unoriginal.

I do love his stuff - but just can't justify the price for a bit of camp:

so who is Peck?

I bought Stan Ridgway's cd "Blood" that accompanied an exhibition of Mr. Ryder's years ago, but I've never even unwrapped it yet, though I'm a big fan of Stan's and a casual fan of Mr. Ryder's...

He definitely falls into the creepy and cool category.

in the bizarre/allegorical/figurative department i like Amy Cutler's work way better:

I BELIEVE they "came up" about the same time... and are now, obviously, represented by Porterhouse. I guess that's not too much of an explanation...

And this Amy Culter stuff is way neat too. Must investigate..

I love Mark Ryden's work. He's one of the reasons I buy Juxtapoz magazine.

I'm gonna be the lame downer/parade rainer/antagonist, but I don't see what's so great about Juxtapoz magazine. It's like the exact same aesthetic over and over again, and now it's like I can't escape that same obnoxiously over-stylized manner of illustration! I understand it's a legitimate scene/aesthetic, and I don't mean to be knocking it, but it's so repetitive that it seems to me that it borders on cliche. Spaced eyes, droopy mouth, vectorized-looking shapes... like a long Barry McGee nightmare that won't go away! I'm not knocking the originators of the trend (i.e. Beautiful Losers artists... Ryan McGinness, Mark Ryden, etc...) or the legitimacy of such a movement... I mean I love west coast/graffiti art too (in moderation), but c'mon!

Peck, is Marion Peck who is Ryden's wife. Her art is done in a similar style as his but not as expensive. ;) And if your wondering how expensive, he is selling the painting "Tree of Life" for $800,000.00.(its fucking awesome) And I believe Porterhouse is owned by them because they only sell their works or Mark's brother KRK.

Thanks for the info, Mute! I had no idea Marion was his wife AND that they (potentially) owned Porterhouse. I guess the name makes sense in a meat-theme sorta way. Bad me for now picking up on that!

Anyway... go about your day... ;)

One day I'll own something of his....

he is so weird I can't figure out how much this book is......

tree show (http://www.markryden.com/treeshow/index.html)

but I really don't want a book - I want a big painting in a horribly gothic frame.

I have a smallish print of this one. It is my favorite:

http://www.eatmedaily.com/wordpress/wp-content/uploads/2009/04/ryden-angel-of-meat1.jpg

And also a small framed version of this:

http://farm3.static.flickr.com/2095/2455617733_ae36640d4b.jpg?v=0

As well as a bunch of books/postcards/mini portfolios (Anima Mundi is gorgeous), and the tiny "Blood" book and bookmark, which are awesome. I wish I could afford a large piece! The frame alone on the Meat Angel is incredible.

Juxtapoz has gotten kind of annoying. We no longer have a subscription to that, but we now get Hi Fructose. The recent Mark Ryden issue is beautiful.
