I agree with DSM...what we have is not a dorkishness...it's a geek chic. And I'm friggin' salivating over this movie (and the entire host of comic flicks coming out over the next few years {Batman vs. Superman, AND a new Batman, AND a new Superman...and that whole Incredible Hulk thing, the DareDevil thing, and they're giving the Punisher another chance...I dunno how I feel about Nick Cage playing Ghost Rider tho....})

Well, I can't speak for the rest of ya's, but personally, I don't see myself as a dork or a geek because I....
Am a systems admin and pretty much live for computers

Have a comic book / action figure collection
Love all things fantasy and sci-fi
etc
I'm baddassed as hell and if other people don't get what I'm into, it sure as hell doesn't make them any better than me, or make me some weirdo for that matter!

Ditto, but you got three years on me. When I go to GameLans most of the dudes are as old or older than I, screw that teenie bopper stereotype.

Chrimminy people there is NOTHING wrong with being a dork! If only my friend would finally sit down and type a openning thesis to his ideas on the differences between dorks, nerds, and geeks...
See, here's a basic run down (and mind you that all ideas proposed are copyright Ryan Collins 2000):
Dorks are those who live in their own little world, be it sci-fi, roleplaying, videogaming... whatever unsociable hobby they can get their hands on. However, dorks have social skills, and can/will communicate with others outside of their little world, be it about that world or not. They also have no qualms about sharing this world with others, be them dorks or no.
Nerds on the other hand, are very solitary. They live in their own world, and they like it that way. They do not have the social skills of a dork, and will not converse with others about their little world.
Geeks are the elitests of the three. They live in their own little world, but will only talk to other geeks. They will NOT converse with dorks on the matters, for they feel that they do not appriciate the world they share as much as Geeks do.
I hope this clears things up for you... and just for the record I dont go for any buzz word terms like geek chic... no matter how cool you try to make it sound, you're just a flippin' dork.
Not that there's anything wrong with that.

I guess I just don't see the terms geek, dork, or nerd encapsulating the coolness that is me. I guess it's like being black and calling yourself nigga'. It's cool on the one level between you and your bro's, but it's also derogatory on many other levels. I think terms like those imply that I am somehow sub-standard.
Milkman Dan
16 Jul 2002, 10:32 AM
Sub-standard, smudstandard! Dork is your TITLE!! It is who you are! Woe to those that would tell you otherwise... dorks are quite exceptable in todays sociaty... unless your a jock, but I'd imagine you're not in High School any more, so these issues should matter not (as they don't to me... though they didn't when I was there either).
What is everyone elses thoughts? Is dorks a derogitory term? Are we really THAT socially excepted?

Let me break it down for ya' Dan...we're all friends here, so we can talk straight.
Dork ain't my "title". I disliked "class labels" back in HS. That's why I'm slightly offended by the use of the same ones now i.e. dork, jock, art-fag, whatever. Those issues did matter to me back then and they still do now. When you label yourself or are labeled by somebody, a divide is created between yourself and the other "classes" that you percieve to exist. I feel no need to slap a title on myself so that I can orient myself with the world around me. I'm a mix of a bunch of different interests accumulated throughout my life and I'm proud of it. I can hang with just about anybody and all a title does is complicate things between us and create stereotypes. So, go ahead and call yourself a dork if you like but don't drag me into it.
BTW...I didn't mean for the thread to develop into a debate on semantics, but I've had 5 cups of java and I'm in a contraversial mood, so watch out :p

Okay man, that's perfectly cool. I feel somewhat ashamed now that I coined so many terms in one post, being one that usually goes against such things. But I completely see where you are coming from, and I do apologize as I ment no harm.
No more dragging will commence! From now on, you are merely DogStarMan! GO FORTH, and bring peace to our world... and abolish the labels that seperate our peoples!:D

AH! THERE IS NO BENEVOLENT GOD!!!
So what do you all think of the plot, by the way... a scientist who has an alien egg to attract predators?
...
That's right kids, HE'S a SCIENTIST...
DogStarMan
18 Jul 2002, 01:57 PM
I read the book a long time ago and I think I remember the plot as being sooo much cooler in it. If I remember right, the Predators were using the Alien eggs to seed planets that they wanted to take over, kinda' like the ultimate bio-weapon. The aliens would kill every living thing on the planet, and then the Predators would come down on a hunting holiday and kill all of the aliens and have themselves a bar-b-q. Or maybe I just dreampt that...I don't know. The plot from the movie sounds like it has promise though.
Milkman Dan
18 Jul 2002, 02:00 PM
yah, the predators seeding the worlds plot is in the Aliens/Predator WAR graphic novel, and while a little fishy since it points the finger right at the predators for spreading aliens... it's still a decent set up for good bloody fun.
But with the movie it's not like the plot itself is horrible or anything... it's just this man seems really really dumb.

and we don't even need to discuss that horrid alien-human-baby-thing at the end of Resurrection. wtf?
DogStarMan
22 Jul 2002, 05:48 AM
Yah...that was pretty disturbing. I was hoping the mix of alien and human would be a lot cooler looking, but since Gieger only helped on the first one, they've been limping along on copying his artistic style for too long. I guess when they needed to create something new, it showed. I did like the part where it got sucked through the pinhole though.

DogStarMan, don't get your hopes up too high for this, you may be severely disappointed. This film is being directed by Paul Anderson. Not the brilliant Paul T. Anderson of Hard Eight, Boogie Nights, Magnolia and Punch-Drunk Love, but the creatively-challenged Paul Anderson of Event Horizon, Soldier, Resident Evil, and that really bad "psychological horror" movie with Jeff Goldblum in the early 90's that I have forgotten the name of because it sucked so bad. Just be cautious. This may be the one movie he doesn't fuck up, but I doubt it.
