I'll try this one more time. Really, I think this is a story worthy of discussion. It's almost a slap in the face to that kid for us to turn this into a derailed pissing contest. If the thread continues to get derailed, I'll continue to delete it.

Be sure to watch the video portion. I did not edit the article, so if anyone wants me to bleep out stuff I'll be happy to so. I just can't believe all the teacher got was a 10 day suspension.

Teacher Calls Student "N" Word" (http://www.whas11.com/topstories/stories/WHAS11_TOP_NWord.64363ef1.html)

Valley Traditional High School is in the middle of a racial controversy. A teacher used a racial epithet towards a student. The word is only six letters long but the impact is far reaching.

We do want to warn you that some of the language in this story is strong and may offend some people, but since this story is not just about the "n" word it's also about the pronunciation, we've decided to leave it in the story for you to decide.

Murphy: "What did he say to you specifically?"

Chavers: "Sit down, nigger."

Keysean Chavers is a freshman at Valley, a Boy Scout, a football player, a member of the ROTC, an honor roll student. He was hanging around his teacher’s classroom door in December. The teacher, Paul Dawson, told him to sit down. Dawson says Keysean used the word first.

“I was just kind of stunned for a second and I said, 'Well then, get away from the door, niggaz.' I repeated the same insult because that was sort of what I was trained to do.” The school district says that’s not what they trained Dawson to do. “He tried to say I said it and I didn't say it and no one else in the class said I said it, because I didn't,” says Keysean.

Documents from the school investigation show that several of the students interviewed from Valley did not hear Keysean say the "n" word first. Dawson says students use the slang version of the word at Valley High School all the time. He says “nigger” is a racial slur but says students use “nigga” as often as they say "dude" or "hey, man.” Dawson says as much as he doesn't like the word, he still used the slang version to feel more comfortable with black students. “Why is this word used so frequently? So I just don't understand it and I’m trying to understand it,” Dawson says. “I need help.”

Murphy: "What kind of example are you setting for your students if you are using a word that you don't want them to use?"

Dawson: "Upon reflection, that’s not good."

Dawson was suspended for 10 days without pay from January 9 to January 23 and has to go to diversity training. He says he's learned from this and hopes others think twice before using the epithet. “I will never say any form of nigga. I’m cured of that.”

Dawson says he is sorry for the way things were handled, but Keysean says he is not looking for any apologies. “Apologizing isn't going to change the fact that it happened and he's not been punished,” he says. What constitutes punishment in Keysean’s mind? “Him not having his job anymore.”

Dawson says he wants there to be a steadfast policy against using the word. Right now it is dealt with on a case-by-case basis. Keysean is still in Paul Dawson’s classroom.

Dawson has been with the district for 20 years. As part of our investigation we found that English teacher Paul Dawson was suspended in 1994, back when he worked at southern high school. According to documents, Dawson directed a student to place a sign on another students back that said, “I am gay.” Afterwards, he was assigned to non-instructional duties pending the investigation and he was not supposed to return to Southern High School. The next day he ignored the order and went to Southern anyway. Shortly afterwards, Dawson refused to turn in his grade book to investigators. Dawson was suspended for five days without pay and had to go through an employee assistance program. Dawson also had a letter of reprimand that same year for selling candy to his students.

The school district says even with this most recent incident of him using the word “nigga” toward a student, this veteran teacher will get to keep his job. “It’s understandable the frustration and the anger about a situation like this and we sincerely apologize because it is not our mode of operation, but we do believe that we have sent a very strong message,” says Jefferson County Public Schools spokesperson Lauren Roberts.

Dawson says he will appeal his 10-day suspension to try and get it off his record. He did not want to talk about his past suspension when we met with him. His latest suspension is the longest suspension the district has ever given a teacher.

Dawson will go before district administrators at the end of the month to appeal his unpaid suspension.

I tried to keep the meaningful, on-topic posts that actually add to the discussion. If I happened to miss yours, I apologize. It got lost in the feces.

Yeah, I'd fire his ass.
the guy seems like a racist, homophobic douchebag. lucky if he'll be able to get another job teaching after this event.
I don't think the guy is malicious; however I think he is very unaware, ignorant, and at the very least unprofessional. Seems to be an adolescent trapped in an adult body.
that teacher is unreal. you really have to see the video to get an idea of how pathetic that guy is.....wow....when he started holding up the signs and using the "slang"......just wow.....and then at the end when he says that he'll never ever ever say the word again after just having said it, like, 20 times..........................huh.
I don't think the guy is malicious; however I think he is very unaware, ignorant, and at the very least unprofessional. Seems to be an adolescent trapped in an adult body.i'll agree with this. this guy is completely clueless about how he comes off to other people.
I don't think the guy is racist at all. Rather, I think he's utterly clueless, and is guilty of nothing more than being a painfully unhip dork trying to "relate" to his students. It's quite obvious, really, when you watch the video of this story and see Mr. Dorky McWhiteboy explaining the etymology of the word "nigga" and subtleties between "nigga" and "nigger" to a black female reporter who appears to be locked in an epic internal battle to suppress the urge to smack him upside the head, or at least tell him what a knucklehead he is.

Yes, "nigga" is a term of endearment...used by BLACK PEOPLE when talking to other BLACK PEOPLE. Much like gay men will call each other "queer" or "fag" or lesbians will refer to their lesbo friends as "dykes." It's the process of co-opting a slur and turning into a term of affection, robbing it of its power. And it's worth mentioning that not all black people are exactly cool with black people calling them or any other black person a "nigga."
<chugga chugga, look -- there are the tracks!!>

even if this guy is an adolescent boob, and he honestly didn't understand the racial implications of what he said, that still doesn't make him fit to teach. don't you at least want a teacher with an emotional maturity greater than most of the students?
ohhhhhhhhhhhhhhhh yes. This is/was in the news. Sort of passé now. The guy's defense was "that's what they call each other" or something like that. Ack. Yeah. He should be sweeping doo doo at the Downs. But then he'd be "working with all the immigrants" - no telling what kind of crap his mouth would get him into. Pun-oh-so-intended.

I agree that the teacher's use of the word was probably not with malicious intentions. But someone that clueless has no business teaching.
Yeah, he's obviously not good with molding the young mind.
You can't force kids to put signs on each other calling them gay. You can't call kids racial slurs. How exactly are teachers even supposed to teach anymore? We simply don't support teachers in this country. It sickens me.
I am kidding of course.
Dumb guy, that teacher.

I think he's just very ignorant of what's going on around him. Maybe you don't need to fire him bsed on just his, but you could dislike him instead. Or try and teach him some perception.

Ok, now I chuckled when I heard the teachers side of the story with the way he said the "N" word. This guy just looks oblivious to society, amazing how he got the job.

Seems pretty much unanimous that the guy needs to lose his job, so I'm not sure what further debate is necessary.

I personally think there's more of a racial problem than the dude lets on, but what does it matter? Bottom line is it just comes down to how you act in the classroom and we all agree it was totally inapporpriate.

how 'bout a teachers perspective?

dorky mcwhiteboy deserves a second chance. i got no indication that this dweeb has had any other trouble as a professional. so, give him a second chance - next mistake = fired.

you've seen this guy; he's the teacher trying to be cool but is only mocked by the students. the real cool teachers (those who have earned respect from the students) can relate to students in their lingo, because they've earned their respect and are accepted by the students. i'm fairly well respected by my students and can say things that other teachers get maligned by the student body (not anything racial, just how i get on their case when they dont work up to potential. something about the delivery, the kids say). this guy is a dork trying to be cool. give him a break, but only one.

but the real issue to me is the difference between "nigger" = bad, and "nigga" = good, cool. (granted, i was told the difference way back in high school by a black friend). i just dont get that. if the word (and history/meaning behind it) is offensive, how can any derivation of said word be "cool"? that thought process just doesnt make sense.

is it ok for b.e.t. to have shows peppered with "nigger/nigga" throughtout the script, and not for cbs? just because b.e.t. is a black tv broadcast. i think not.

lets just remove the "n" wordz from our collective vocabulary.

So I just don't understand it and I’m trying to understand it,” Dawson says. “I need help.”
That's pretty clear.

...back when he worked at southern high school. According to documents, Dawson directed a student to place a sign on another students back that said, “I am gay.”
Defend that one, Mr. Dawson.

oops, i didnt read carefuly enough.

that's his second stupid move in 12 years. he's forfeited his right to be employed as a teacher.

maybe they could move him to gym where he can charge students $1 to get out of dressing for gym??
