Notice the drop in right wing talk radio? I'm hoping the fad that is annoying talk radio is dying, but maybe this is just a swing back to the center as people get tired of Rush and company defending the idiot republicans?
I love the way Howard Stern has tanked since going more political.

Radio listeners swing a bit more country

SUMMER RATINGS
Here are the top 10 local stations by audience share according to summer quarter Arbitron ratings:
1. WLW-AM (700), 10.5 share
2. WUBE-FM (105.1), 6.4
3. WEBN-FM (102.7), 6.2
4. WRRM-FM (98.5), 6.1
5. WKFS-FM (107.1), 5.8
6. WGRR-FM (103.5), 5.5
7. WMOJ-FM (94.9), 5.1
8. (tie) WIZF-FM (100.9), WOFX-FM (92.5), 4.6
10. WKRC-AM (550), 4.4
Country music WUBE-FM (105.1) is getting big and rich thanks to Big & Rich, Gretchen Wilson and other hot country performers.
The Infinity Broadcasting station ranked second with all listeners - behind perennial favorite WLW-AM, owned by Clear Channel - in summer quarter Arbitron ratings. It had ranked third in the spring, and fourth a year ago.
B105 also jumped to third from eighth with listeners ages 18-34, behind rock stations WEBN-FM (102.7) and WKFS (KISS107.1), both owned by Clear Channel.
"Country is today's pop music. Today's country music melodies are catchy, and the lyrics are meaningful," says Marty Thompson, B105 program director. "Pop music is dreadful now. Country music and hip-hop is hot now."
While WEBN-FM and KISS held strong, Infinity's WAQZ-FM (97.3) fell off the radar. "New Rock 97.3" dropped from fifth to 10th with its target 18-34 group. The syndicated Howard Stern morning show - which moves to Sirius Satellite Radio in January - has lost about half of his WAQZ-FM audience share in the past year, falling from fourth to ninth.
Soft rock WRRM-FM (98.5) and "jammin' oldies" WMOJ-FM (94.9), sister stations owned by Susquehanna, also drew more listeners in the summer. WARM98 moved up to fourth from seventh overall, and
MOJO went to seventh from 10th.
While "jammin' oldies" stations have slumped elsewhere, Cincinnati's MOJO is working by playing artists from ABBA to Stevie Wonder, says Dan Swensson, general manager.
"We aggressively track music appetites of Cincinnati, and we promote it aggressively," Swensson said.
In talk radio, the Air America format with Jerry Springer and Al Franken, which debuted in January on WCKY-AM (1530), had its best ratings, increasing to No. 16 from No. 22.
WDBZ-AM (1230), "the Buzz," also had its strongest book this year, ranking No. 18. But WKRC-AM (550), with Rush Limbaugh and Sean Hannity, dropped from No. 6 to No. 10.

No, 97.3 is a different radio station. They used to be WEBN type rock, then switched to the aweful new rock format. They play Stern in the morning.

"Pop music is dreadful now. Country music and hip-hop is hot now."I think the article was poorly written, but I love that quote. How long do you think it will be before they try to combine country and hip-hop since they are both hot? Think of the audience you could reach if you could find something to appeal to both groups!

Non-comm stations are rated seperately from commercial stations and are rarely publicised in the same manner. In Cincinnati, generally, WGUC is far-and-away the King with nearly 2x the audience of (pre-ownership flip) WVXU, who in turn has double the audience of WNKU.
As far as WAIF is concerned, I don't know. I'm all for WMKV (The Way Radio Was Meant To Be, Bay-bee!) myself.

edit: i still have some of the broadcasts on tape...i used to tape songs i liked off the radio. i'll have to find them to remember what the name of the station was

I think they moved down the dial to 97.3. (Weren't the call letters WAQZ?) I've been out of Cincy for awhile, so this could be incorrect.

WMKV rawks, but they still do not compare to the mighty WOBO! That's about all I listen to anymore when I'm in Cincinnati. And I can pick up their signal all the way to Wilmington.

They called themselves Channel Z. When I first started interning at 97X when I was in college, I was amused to see the copy of the B-52's "Cosmic Thing" with the track "Channel Z" marked off DO NOT PLAY!!!!! The funny thing is that the lyric of the chorus says "Getting nothing but static on Channel Z". :-)
I'm amused that WAQZ has fallen off the ratings map. "Alternative" radio has run itself into the ground. There just isn't much audience for what they're trying to do anymore. The biggest indication of that would be that the biggest alt station in the country (K-ROCK in New York) was flipped earlier this year to be more "classic rock" leaning and now they're flipping to a talk-radio format in January.
Now that Stern isn't even doing it for them, I bet that Infinity will get rid of "New Rock" 97.3 before long. That top ten that Slar posted is hysterical. Gee, looking at the rest of it, seeing Gorillaz at #1 (which is basically a hip-hop/pop track) really makes me believe that payola is long gone...

What? No more hookers and blow?
What IS happening to the radio biz? Are we all becoming respectable NPR announcers? (Oh wait, I resemble that remark!)
I agree, top-40 alternative radio has run its course. Take a look at MTV2's rock countdown and you'll see Bloc Party, My Morning Jacket, Franz Ferdinand, John Butler Trio, and the White Stripes (as well as the predictable Death Cab for Cutie and Coldplay) ... they are definitely broadening their tastes beyond Green Day and Nickelback.

I found it funny on the "CINCINATTI's NEW ROCK" website that DEATH CAB FOR CUTIE is considered a "WHAT's NEXT?" band..
Even the poseur kids that learned about them from watching the "O.C." were onto them before these guys.. :p

FWIW, talk stations always get a big boost in ratings during election years.
As for 97.7 not showing up in the ratings, well... 97X when it was on that same stick hardly ever showed up. The 'new' 97.7 might show up, but it won't be anything major due to their lack of powerful signal.
