Listen, I don't blame people for wanting to have or having guns in a time like this. I'd want one too. But what logic is there in shooting at people who are trying to help you? I kid you not, if I had a gun in NOLA, and I saw somebody shooting at a military chopper, I'd take them out. I know people are stressed and it's hard for me to even try to understand how bad they feel, but come on, why would you shoot at the people trying to help you?

Probably for the same reason you would overturn an ambulance that is evacuating critically ill-children from a flooded hospital:

I never thought I'd have to say this but, It's time for President Bush to declare MArtial Law on New Orleans.. There, Said..
Obviously these folks don't want to let "Rescue Efforts" get in th way of their pursuit of "BLING!"

Or rob a nurse at gunpoint who stepped outside the hospital where she works for some fresh air. They said on npr this morning that the convention center has become a sort of central point for looters to sell stuff to people, not like they're going to be able to buy anything with the money they get anyway...

When are they going to declare Marshal Law? What does it take?
It'd be the first time since WWII that it'd be invoked, for one. Maybe the administration doesn't believe the situation is that serious, yet.

Good god... I can't imagine what people down there are going through, but what the fuck is wrong with people???? It's pretty fucking sad that instead of trying to help others, people are running around stealing and shooting at those who are trying to help. Every single one of those assholes need to be locked up and forgotten about.

According to CNN, martial law was declared "in some areas" on Tuesday.
New Orleans Mayor Ray Nagin told television station WWL that 80 percent of the city was under water, and authorities declared martial law in some areas.
But I don't think that really matters if there aren't enough authorities to enforce it.

They may need to pull soldiers out of Iraq and deploy them in New Orleans.

My best guess is that these shootings are addicts' attempts at obtaining drugs, which they currently cannot locate. They are aiming their attacks at drug-stocked medical transport vehicles.

They are also shooting at military humvees (link (http://www.cnn.com/2005/WEATHER/09/01/katrina.impact/index.html)) and helicopters trying to land at hospitals (link (http://www.cnn.com/2005/HEALTH/09/01/katrina.hospitals.ap/index.html))

Apparently it's already been stated that there is no way we'll pull people out of Iraq to come to NOLA.

I've read in a couple different places (including the long Washington Post article on the "official" hurricane thread) that people are shooting and yelling "You better come get my family!" So I dont think they're looking for drugs. Why would you should at someone if you want them to help you?
I guess desperation makes people do crazy things. And people there are surely desperate.
Desperate measures indeed. You are probably right, but I still worry about shady characters trying to capitalize and exploit. I don't think I am too far out in left-field with the drug-seeking theory.

I Agree..
Why else would Wal-Mart be looted for Jewelry and "BLING"??
I think delpoying the Army and declaring martial law is unfortunately the ONLY solution here..
Meanwhile liberals will play the "Blame Bush for Global Warming" and the "RACE CARD".. Wake the fuck up! Americans are dying UNNECESSARILY as a result of these thugs..
I could understand the rioting after the Rodney King Verdict in 1992, but this... This is just humanity reaching an ALL-TIME low!

This morning it was said that Governor Blanco has declared war on the looters and has authorized the national guard troops to shoot to kill if necessary. This is only going to get uglier and uglier.

This morning on CNN, they were talking about how police had gathered into a station house fro the night and they were basically under siege. They were fired upon and returned fire all night long. Somebody made a sign to hang out front that says "Ft. Apache."

The mayor of New Orleans said in the CNN interview (available at CNN's website) that many of the looters and folks that are shooting folks are drug addicts and dealers over-running the city..
