View Full Version : The Big Ten (11)

Okay, since all these other conferences are getting their share of glory on the message boards, it's time for the big boys to step in. 3 teams in the preseason top 10, all with the potential to win the national championship. Another team hanging back, just waiting to take the lead and conquer the Big Ten -- PURDUE!!!
So, between Michigan, OSU, Iowa, and Purdue, it looks like the Big Ten has some good representation in college football this year.

I think the main reason Purdue has a chance is b/c they don't have Ohio State or Michigan *shudder* on their schedule. I don't know who they had to sleep with to get it, but they're pretty damn lucky.
I gotta go with the Bucks this year.

Purdue has the luck of the rotating Big Ten schedule on their side. Michigan and Ohio State got paired together as the teams they don't play every 5 or 6 years -- been that way for a while. Nobody really paid much attention to it in the past because Purdue was never very good at football. Now that they have a chance, it will be a big topic of discussion this year, especially if Purdue and Ohio State or Michigan go undefeated and tied for top honors in the Big Ten.

Yeah, i get the feeling that this will be another split big ten championship year. Like OSU and Iowa in 2002, I think OSU and Purdue will go undefeated. It seems like everytime OSU wins the big10, they have to share it with some team that dodged them. Oh well, OSU will still get the Rose Bowl and USC.

Ok. Bucky has that whole "I'm a badger with claws and teeth" thing, but he looks pretty tall and awkward. Goldy is just a gopher. Gophers have much smaller claws, but have the large front teeth. Goldy is quite athletic and I'd bet he could throw down with almost any mascot. So, if this particular gopher and this particular badger went into a dark alley, my money would be on Goldy.
If things get hairy, Goldy can call upon Crunch and TC. What does Bucky got, Bernie Brewer and a block of cheese?

I was off a little bit. I forgot last season was a forgetable 7-4. It was the year before that they won 10 games. But, they aren't the shit program that they have been for a while. I'm telling you, watch out for Maroney. He ran for 1300+ yards last year while splitting time at HB. Barber had over 1,000 yards last season but is gone and they have a stud freshmen so Maroney won't have to bear the entire load of a rush heavy offense.

oh yeah, good point. all the games last year blured into one big pile of suck.
Robinson could play well if JoePa keeps him in one position...I think playing multiple positions on consecutive plays hurt him last year.
Now that I think about it, all I can remember from the Penn State/Purdue game is the pre-game tailgating.

I as well can't wait for this showdown. I was reading a magazine and it listed the top 25 college games this year and this one was number 1 or 2(i cant remember). I watched about half of the Texas game but went on to something else because it was such a blowout. I didn't see ohio state play much but this is going to be a hell of a game.

THE conference opens undefeated as all teams in play emerge victorious. (Even Indiana. On the Road!) Next week will probably be a different story. Storm clouds gathering on the horizon.
suntzu with a bad bit of foreshadowing. I think Ohio State still has a shot at making #2 in the BCS. early season loss, #2 team in the nation, don't get dropped out of the top 10. all good signs, provided they win out.

The last four teams to win a Big Ten Championship: Michigan, OSU, Iowa and the ILLINI. Oskee-Wow-Wow
Wisconsin's run in the 90s is long over, and Minnesota never plays anyone out of conference and proves themselves imposters by season's end. So the two of you can fight your little border war while the three teams with the best all-time winning percentages in the Big Ten (U-M, OSU and Illinois) play for conference championships.

You know what the best part of that post was? The part when you were actually serious in comparing Illinois to Michigan and Ohio State.
Will the Badgers win the Big Ten? Probably not. But it is Alvarez's last year, so you never know about the emotional impact. But one thing I'm absolutely sure of is that they'll finish ahead of Illinois.

Illinois also has the third-most conference championships in the last 100 years. I'm sorry the facts offend your cheesehead sensibilities.

Apologies for overlooking the Red Grange era of dominance in football. Please, there are two football powerhouses in the Big Ten and we all know who they are.
Aside - for all you Illini out there, the only national championship banner your storied athletics program has ever hoisted was in Men's Tennis. Oskee-wow-wow indeed.
I'm sure it would be great fun to talk some non-revenue-generating college-sports smack with you. It sounds like it's a passion of yours.

that's great for Illinois, but I prefer to live in the here-and-now when it comes to comparing current team's abilities. Illinois isn't going to do much in the way of the Big Ten this year. and it's always great when the #9 team in the conference invites the #7 team down for a beating. i'm sure that game will be all over SportsCenter.
Purdue has won one Big Ten championship in the past 5 years. Purdue has been to a bowl game every year for the past 7 years. Michigan is the only other team that can lay claim to that second fact.

You got to understand that the Minnesota vs Wisconsin is the oldest rivalry in college football. Even if one of the teams was the greatest football team ever and the other couldn't even beat a junior high team, there is going to be people talking shit.
Minnesota probably won't win the Big Ten, nor will 'sconsin. OSU, Michigan, or possibly Iowa will win it. Purdue will make a run at it but fall short. But the Gophers will be ahead of Indiana, Illinois, NWestern, MSU, Penn St and the Badgers :p .

I love people who root for multiple teams. How convienent for you when North Carolina beat Wisconsin in the tournament. You couldn't lose.
Congratulations on the championship. North Carolina should have crushed Illinois in that game, considering the U of I's early foul trouble in the frontcourt and May's inside dominance. But thanks to the selfish play of the knucklehead pictured above and others they almost let the overmatched Illini steal it.
Do you also take pride in UNC's football program? Its most famous player is better known for his voracious crack-smoking habit, which is certainly something to brag about.

I've always been a Xavier and Indiana fan. I became even more of an IU fan when I went to school there. There's no rule against rooting for multiple teams. XU was the hometown team growing up, its only natural to root for your hometown team. If I took a job in Lubbock, Texas, I'd probably become a Texas Tech fan eventually. Sometimes its obvious when someone is riding the bandwagon of multiple teams, but with Jonathan, I dont think thats the case at all

No. Illinois might have had older players, but nobody in the country had North Carolina's athletes.
And your "other than 'Mays'" condition is a big one. Both teams ran three-guard offenses, and one-half of Illinois' frontcourt (James Augustine) was on the bench for over 3/4 of the game. Illinois other forward was 6-5 Roger Powell. He was Illinois' best frontcourt defender, but checking a pair of 6-9 forwards (May and Williams) was too much to ask. May scored on every possession that went through him.

This should be a good game. The Minnesota passing game has a lot of potential, but it has struggled because of inconsistent play from the receivers and the QB at times. They could be very explosive if they keep their heads in the game.

same here, but Purdue had absolutely no reason to even be leading at the end of the game. they were schooled from moment one to the end. i hate Tiller's play calling (why did Purdue abandon passing across the middle?), and that's part of the reason why they sucked today. but, truth be told, Minnesota was the better team, and Purdue was lucky to even take it to OT.

I don't know man. I thought Purdue, especially the Defense really played well in the second half. But they didn't step up on that fourth quarter drive that tied the game. Yeah despite whatever Tiller thinks Purdue will always be a passing team. And what' with Purdue getting schooled on the Bubble screen. Purdue pioneered that play. Why doesn't Purdue run the Bubble screen anymore? Why does Dorien Bryant drop so many passes? Passing over the middle would've worked the whole game. Minnesota is a one player team.

Purdue did play well enough in the second half, but the #11 team in the nation needs to play both halves well. the same crap that killed them last year bit them in the ass again; slow starts, bad play calling, and the defense not finishing the game (I blame Brock Spack's D-calling on that). not once, but twice, did Purdue let the game slide away and let Minnesota get a TD (end of regulation, 1st OT). Purdue will drop to roughly #20 where they belong. silver lining: if this is their only loss, it came early in the year. and, if Minnesota ends up playing really well the rest of the year, it makes Purdue look all the better.

Purdue will drop to roughly #20 where they belong. silver lining: if this is their only loss, it came early in the year. and, if Minnesota ends up playing really well the rest of the year, it makes Purdue look all the better.
agreed. I do believe the defense was tired at the end and Brock Spack wasn't necessarily to blame. It's not like they were playing prevent.

Alternate thread title: The Little Nine.
But with TSUN looking shitty, let's just call it The Little 10.
I have NEVER seen a Buckeye defense this good, and I have seen A LOT of good Buckeye defenses. A.J. Hawk is inhuman (and a Centerville Elk).
Look for me in Pasadena, chumps.
Go Bucks!

If I had to guess right now, I'd predict Va. Tech/Texas and USC in pasadena. OSU is one of the best teams in the nation, no doubt, but that Tex. loss is gonna squash any BCS title hopes.
I can't see the Horns winning out. But Va Tech, maybe. There have been one loss teams in the BCS quite consistently -- it has to happen early, and against a very high-ranked team, which gives me considerable hope for OSU.

8. Ohio State - as good as advertised
11. Michigan State - better than advertised
17. Wisconsin - about right
18. Minnesota - won't win away from the dome
22. Purdue - OVER - RATED claplclapclapclapclap
as a Purdue fan, you're preaching to the choir. no way in hell Purdue was the #11 team in the nation. they're right where they belong right now. and don't sell Minnesota short. they've got one helluva running game.

and don't sell Minnesota short. they've got one helluva running game.
If Purdue's defense is as good as advertised, then the Gophers are a force to be reckoned with. They ran for 301 yards against Purdue - Maroney 217 yds, Russell 75 yds. 2 tds, Ellerson 9 yds. Maroney already has 700 yards this season.
Michigan State looks ALOT better than I thought they would be. Can they keep it going?

Let the record state that I have never been a fan of Purdue, nor do I intend to become one before judgement day. :p ;)
god forbid. :p
those of us that are Purdue fans have to deal with this overrated crap every year. why do the polls and writers always feel like Purdue is the sleeper choice every year? Joe Tiller will never coach a team to their truest potential.

Fixed that for ya. don't want to be confused with some ivy league school. :D
The game was fantastic. 109,000 screaming fans, and I was right in the middle of it. Definitely one of the best sporting events I have ever been to.
GO STATE!!! (F--- MICHIGAN!)

I am sure at 6-0, and at the top of the Big Ten, that the Lions will not get mistaken for an ivy league school. :p

Damn, that must have kicked ass.
Wow, Penn State all alone on top of the Big 10! Good for Paterno.
LanneyD, you lucky dog! That must been one heck of a party in the Beaver last night. I was over there for a WI/PSU game about 8 years ago. Even though the Badgers lost it was still a great time. Those folks know how to party!

All in all, it was an amazing night, except for seeing kids get maced for trying to run on the field after the game. Downtown was PACKED, full of happy and drunk people. Fortunately no rioting or anything (at least that i've heard of yet).
Honestly, I didn't think PSU could pull it off. My prediction was 17-10, but with OSU winning. I'm very excited that I was wrong.

Yeah, it's been awhile. I was only 4 yrs old the last time you were here, but hopefully you can stay awhile this time. Hopefully you will be reunited with Floyd of Rosedale and Paul Bunyan's Axe.

I'll just say this: I don't know about the rankings, but it is really nice getting to watch the ACC on the weekends (here in SC) rather than the Big Ten (like when I lived in Cincy).

Not being argumentative, just curious, but why?
I think It's because I can't escape it down here. The ACC dominates every football discussion, much more than the Big 10 dominated football talk back home. Therefore, I can't help but be interested in the ACC.

I'm still in disbelief. 10 point lead with under 3 minutes left and they blew it. How do you fumble a perfect snap on a punt? I'm blaming my buddy for the loss. He convinced me to leave my tv in the 4th quarter of the game and meet him and 2 other guys to drive to Eau Claire and play in an ultimate frisbee tournament. I think the game was over before we crossed into 'sconsin, but I should not have left my post.

It was real classy of Wisn. to act like they were chopping down the goal posts and running around by the student section.
