Because this is where all the college football action is.
I went to my first ever football game in 2nd grade at Neyland Stadium. I've been back for a game almost every year since - Dad has season tickets.
I haven't decided which game I'm going to yet this year, but it will probably be Georgia.
Go VOLS!

Is USC coming to Knoxville this year? You should totally go to that game. Spurrier in the house!
(as a possible future USC student, my friend Jarrett has offered to bring me up to speed on the ways of being a Gamecocks fan this season)

Yes, USC will be there 10/29 time TBA. Steve Spurrier - don't get me started!
(He's still wishes he could have played at UT. Just because they weren't QB U at the time...)

My fav. team, period, is UK...but just like the boys from Wake, they will most definitely not make any noise this season in football.
Hypothetically thinking here, but I want to throw this out there, because I am wondering about this even though it will probably never ever ever happen. Since the SEC pulls such national favor and such and can get a team to a National Championship...well if a team such as KY, even though they aren't ranked preseason, would happen to run the table for the whole season and go undefeated including their key wins over teams such as Georgia, Tennessee, Florida, etc...well do you think they would have the chance at the National Championship and be in teh big games or would the fact of them not being ranked preseason hurt them terribly? Please someone help with this question or just moment of stupidity on my part, can't tell which it is.

And just remember how ferious Tennessee fans are about football. Almost as bad as UK fans are about basketball. But anyways remember a few years back I think it was that the Knoxville area changed their area code to 865 I believe so that it would be VOL....can you imagine the person that was stuck with the number (865) 868-3377. I am thinking that it had to be like the stadium or univesity because that flat out spells VOLUNTEERS.

USC was so lucky to get Spurrier. If something was going to stop Clemson's dominance in the series, this would be it.

I think if UK ran the table in football, they would have a chance at the National Championship because the world as we know it would be ending, hell would be freezing over, impending armaggedon, etc, etc. :p
Seriously... it would really depend on what happened with the other teams across the country. If they were the only undefeated team, then they probably would have a shot. If they weren't, it's a crapshoot. Just look at Auburn last year. A lot of people speculated that their lack of preseason hype caused them to start ranked much lower and made it much more difficult to get high enough in the polls to make it into the top 2 in the BCS. Of course, others argue that their soft non-conference schedule was the problem.

apparently true...when I went white water rafting down in Tennessee this past month, our guide was just shooting the breeze with us and that's one of things he told us. It used to be something different but it was changed a few years back. I looked up Knoxville's area code and it is truly 865. I don't remember talk of this though when I went to a small college about 40 minutes or so outside Knoxville, but the change could have happened before or after I went there.

SOUTHERN vs. NORTHERN FOOTBALL
Women's Accessories: NORTH: ChapStick in back pocket and a $20 bill in the front pocket. SOUTH: Louis Vuitton duffel with two lipsticks, waterproof mascara, and a fifth of Captain Morgan/Crown. Money is not necessary - that's what dates are for.
Stadium Size: NORTH: College football stadiums hold 20,000 people. SOUTH: High school football stadiums hold 20,000 people.
Campus Decor: NORTH: Statues of founding fathers. SOUTH: Statues of Heisman trophy winners.
Homecoming Queen: NORTH: Also a physics major. SOUTH: Also Miss America.
Cheerleaders: NORTH: If you are slightly coordinated, you make the varsity squad. SOUTH: You begin cheer camp at age two, complete with ballet, dance, & gymnastic training.
Getting Tickets: NORTH: 5 days before the game you walk into the ticket office on campus and purchase tickets. SOUTH: 5 months before the game you walk into the ticket office on campus & put name on the waiting list.
Friday Classes After a Thursday Night Game: NORTH: Students and teachers not sure they're going to the game, because they have classes on Friday. SOUTH: Teachers cancel Friday classes because they don't want to see the few hung-over students that might actually make it to class.
Parking: NORTH: An hour before game time, the University opens the campus for game. SOUTH: RVs sporting their school flags begin arriving on Wednesday for the weekend festivities. The really faithful arrive on Tuesday.
Game Day: NORTH: A few students party in the dorm and watch ESPN on TV. SOUTH: Every student wakes up, has a beer for breakfast, and rushes over to where ESPN is broadcasting "Game Day Live" to get on camera and wave to the idiots up north.
Tailgating: NORTH: Raw meat on a grill, beer with lime in it, listening to local radio station with truck tailgate down. SOUTH: 30-foot custom pig-shaped smoker fires up at dawn. Cooking accompanied by live performance by "Dave Matthews' Band," who come over during breaks and ask for a hit off bottle of bourbon.
Getting to the Stadium: NORTH: You ask "Where's the stadium?" When you find it, you walk right in. SOUTH: When you're near it, you'll hear it. On game day it becomes the state's third largest city.
Concessions: NORTH: Drinks served in a paper cup, filled to the top with soda. SOUTH: Drinks served in a plastic cup with the home team's mascot on it, filled less than halfway with soda, to ensure enough room for Captain Morgan/Crown.
When National Anthem is Played: NORTH: Stands are less than half full, and less than half of them stand up. SOUTH: 100,000 fans, all standing, sing along in perfect four-part harmony.
The Smell in the Air After the First Score: NORTH: Nothing changes. SOUTH: Fireworks, with a touch of Captain Morgan/Crown.
Commentary (Male): NORTH: "Nice play." SOUTH: "D@mmit, you slow sumbitch - tackle him and break his legs." Commentary (Female): NORTH: "My, this certainly is a violent sport." SOUTH: "D@mmit, you slow sumbitch - tackle him and break his legs."
Announcers: NORTH: Neutral and paid. SOUTH: Announcer harmonizes with the crowd in the fight song, with a tear in his eye because he is so proud of his team.
After the Game: NORTH: The stadium is empty way before the game ends. SOUTH: Another rack of ribs goes on the smoker. While somebody goes to the nearest package store for more bourbon; planning begins for next week's game.
Nothing else in the universe comes even halfway close to the glories of Southern football!!

SOUTHERN vs. NORTHERN FOOTBALL
I'm surprised by all the people down here that are ONLY into college football. They can tell you where every Clemson and Carolina player went to high school, but don't half of the starting QBs in the NFL.
I assume this is because the area didn't have NFL before the the Panthers, but it still seems strange to me. It's like, to me, if you are into football, you are into football. I can see preferring one over the other, but this situation is really odd to me.

Not having a NFL team is definitely a factor. I grew up in Tennessee, and have always been a college football fan. (Go Vols!) The extent of my NFL viewing was the Super Bowl. When I arrived at Miami, I didn't know what to think of all the Bengals and Browns fans. I was one of the few watching football on Saturday, rather than Sunday. Since I'm back living where the closest NFL team is almost three hours away, the focus is still on college football. It's strange to return to Nashville and see all the Titans fans.
My NFL allegiances now are based on where my favorite college players went, so currently it's the Colts and the Steelers.

I guarantee they will not beat them down. UGA by 10 -- at the most. UGA has a QB in Shockley that has yet to live up to his promise, they lost Pollack and Thurman, and a couple WR's. As long as that Zabrasky (sp?) kid is QBing at Boise they will put points up, plus they'll be fired up as this is their biggest game in the programs history.
I'm also wondering if Carroll will let the SC boys hang 70 on Hawaii

I'm ready to watch my too highly ranked Vols play the overrated Gators from behind my hands at 8 PM on Saturday. I'm not really sure why they are ranked 5th and 6th, respectively, but they are (or 4 and 7, if you believe USA Today).

3. LSU
4. Virginia Tech

Hey, Patas, what's the "Breakfast Club?" (I ask because you say your heart is w/the Boilermakers).
Breakfast club is a Purdue legacy. It's like Halloween every home football game. Essentially everyone gets up real early on saturday morning. Probably around 6 or 7am. The dressup in various ridiculous costumes and go out to the bars. By the time the game rolls around no one can really standup on the bleachers, but it's a good thing that there are so many people at the games, becuase it helps everyone keep their balance.
What's really amazing is that bars stay open until 4am or so the night before close for two hours and reopen for breakfast club.

Freakin' Hell, what a hot sweaty game that was. Neither team was impressive offensively, but defensively both teams played excellent.
It took me an hour and fifteen minutes to drive the <5 miles home. Getting off campus takes awhile, but the rest of the way is usually pretty quick. But tonight there was a major police presence blocking the street I live on and it was focused in the complex across the street from mine. It caused many traffic delays.

Although I think it may have had something to do with LSU being held to only 58 yards in the second half and only 2 down conversions. Also, I think Rick wanted to show up his old team.

They were doomed to lose that game as soon as they announced they'd be retiring Peyton Manning's number that night.
I know they chose that game because the Colts have an off week this week so Peyton's schedule was free. But still...you've got to push that back a year. You simply can't have Peyton Manning and Steve Spurrier in the same building if you want good things to happen for Tennessee.
The Vols athletic department has to take full responsibility for this loss. Poor planning.

It should have been okay - Tennessee had never lost to South Carolina in Knoxville. They just didn't realize the Spurrier-Manning battle would take precedence.
The truth is, this is actually how I'd though Tennessee would be this year. I thought the pollsters were crazy ranking them as high as they did in the preseason.
