View Full Version : The ACC

Here's a thread for all of us that are fans of teams in the ACC. I think you can figure out which team I'm rooting for.

This season should be pretty interesting because of the 2 divisions. I don't know much about Boston College so I'm also interested in how good they are.

Go Tigers!!!!!

As far as BC is concerned, expect to see a lot of Cincinnati kids playing on the team every year. They'll finish in the top half of the league most years.
I guess with the ACC's makeover, its time to see if they can legitimately compete with the SEC.
My best friend just left for Athens GA for grad school. I tried to explain to him how rabid the football fans are down there. I still dont think he knows what he's in for.

And of all the visiting schools that came to Clemson in the two years I was there, I found UGA fans to be the most obnoxious.

If Vick can get his shit together both on and off the field, Virginia Tech will win the ACC.

Since there is virtually no chance of that happening, it's going to come down to FSU and Miami-- something ACC fans should get used to seeing.

Amen to that...although with Duke so loaded this year and the rest of the conference either young or dilapidated, I'm not looking forward to this year. I'd hoped Chris Paul would stay for one more year at my alma mater, but he left us high and dry. At least my 'Heels brought home the title...it will make it a little easier during what will very likely be a pretty bumpy year in Chapel Hill.

Oh yeah, in case it wasn't clear...

Fuck Duke!!!

16 Aug 2005, 10:34 AM
If you hate Duke, as I'm sure most of you do. Just look at their football team... they're horrible... Correct me if I'm wrong, but didn't ECU's (Eastern Carolina) coach get fired for losing to Duke?

I think any number of N.C. high school teams could beat them. It's what happens when you have academic standards I guess.

Jonathan
16 Aug 2005, 02:29 PM
It's just not the same. You can't get any joy out of beating Dook's football team because they're so abjectly poor. Likewise, if they go 2-9, 1-10 or 0-11, whoop-de-damn-doo. That's what they're supposed to do.

Now, in 1995, when the basketball team went 13-18, and 2-14 in the ACC...that memory makes me feel warm and fuzzy all over. And it will until the day I die.

What a happy post!! :D :D

Yes, this is my choice for post of the day. However, to prove that every cloud has a silver lining, one of those wins was against my beloved Tar Heels. Of course three of those losses were against Wake Forest (2 in the regular season, one in the ACC tourney)...actually maybe we only beat them twice that year.

Still, it's hard to really fault them too much. Small schools have a hard time with football in general and especially with having consistently strong football and basketball programs.

That ECU mention a little earlier was funny. I grew up in Greenville and that town just loves its Pirates...however, they are a pretty mediocre program to get as much love as they do, although one could say the same thing about the Cubs for the last fifty years or so I guess. Anyway, it just seems like if ECU had been in a major conference then they would be set to be a national power. North Carolina produces some good football players, the town and school love football, and ECU does have one of the worst academic reputations in the state...it should be a powerhouse.

Since I'm a graduate of Hokie High, I can remember many a game versus BC. Unevenness is the name of the game - some years they abjectly suck, and other years they can give as much of a run as the Orangemen or the Mountaineers.

Coleman joins Tigers' defense for playing time

By Ed McGranahan

CLEMSON -- Facing perhaps the most daunting stretch of the season, Coach Tommy Bowden challenged the Clemson University football team to play with the same edge it brings to the annual rivalry game with the University of South Carolina.

"When we roll out there in November against South Carolina there's a little bit more fire, a little more emotion," he said Tuesday as he previewed Saturday's game with No. 13 Miami. "I'm trying to get that every week."

Bowden said he believes that moving Duane Coleman from running back to corner will help stoke the fire on defense for the 20th-ranked Tigers.

"There's a standard we want here and expect here that has not been achieved by our team," Bowden said. "We've beaten two quality teams, but there's another level this team needs to get to from a hitting and a toughness standpoint

"He's a collision guy. He's a tough guy. He's a mean guy," he said of Coleman. "That's how the game's played. And there's a level we need to play with defensively we haven't reached yet."

While he's looking for SportsCenter highlights on defense, Bowden said he did not want the impression that he's displeased after victories over Texas A&M and Maryland.

"We're a pretty good defense," he said. "We're just trying to get to the next level."

Defensive coordinator Vic Koenning traces many of the Tigers' shortcomings to youth. And, if nothing else, Coleman brings game experience.

"We're still in the process of our guys learning they've got another gear," he said "We've made progress.

"We're playing a lot of guys that aren't where they're going to be in three years. So, that's the nature of it."

After not playing a down at Maryland, Coleman said he first "joked around" with Koenning about making the switch on the plane ride home. The conversation turned serious Monday as it became clear he wouldn't get much playing time behind freshman James Davis and junior Reggie Merriweather.

"I just like playing football, just put on the pads and run around," he said. "Wasn't getting much playing time, so I wanted to see if I could convert over to defense."

Bowden said Coleman is too good to sit on the bench.

"He's a tough guy, he's a hard-nosed guy," Bowden said. "I need to get him on the field.

"He brings a toughness to the team that I think we need right now."

Koenning, who coveted fullback Steven Jackson and tight end Bobby Williamson, said he has no idea how long before Coleman can make a contribution. Bowden foresees him challenging for a starting job.

"We'll find out how much of this stuff he'll be able to pick up," he said. "I think he'll do well."

Coleman said he's getting a crash course.

"They threw the whole kitchen sink at me," he said after practice Tuesday, adding he's being tutored by Tye Hill, "one of the best corners in the nation."

Koenning's initial instincts are to slot Coleman behind junior Sergio Gilliam at boundary corner and move red-shirt freshman Chris Clemons to safety. Freshmen Haydrian Lewis and Ray Ray McElrathbey are the next options.

"I'll see how fast he can assimilate," Koenning said.

"That would give me the opportunity to move Chris back to safety, which I know is probably the better natural position for him."

Coleman, a junior from Naples, Fla., led Clemson in rushing as a red-shirt freshman with 615 yards. A bone fracture in his foot last August limited him all season, opening the door for Reggie Merriweather to become the Tigers' primary back.

Bowden suspended Coleman indefinitely during spring practice after a disagreement, but Coleman worked his way back onto the team with notable performances in the classroom and off-season conditioning.

"Being kicked off the team for the spring, that just helped me mature an awful lot," he said. "That was the changing point in my life."

Bowden said Davis and Merriweather had more to do with Coleman's situation than anything he'd done over the past year.

"I think he's made more good decisions than bad decisions the last six months," he said. "There were some instances in previous times here during his career where he was making some bad decisions. He's made a lot of good ones lately

"Hopefully because of his patience and work ethic something good will happen to him."

I am worried about this game though. BC will be rocking, a 7:45 PM start! The Eagles will play smashmouth football and the Noles D will have to make some big plays to offset the mistakes that the offense will make.

How bad has FSU slipped? The punting game may be the biggest part of this game for them.

You could make a whole thread about Huggy alone. Chuck has really bad red shoes as well.

They're not bad so much as bright. Almost like a metallic finish.

OK, they're bad.

Anybody else watching this Clemson/GA Tech game?

Of course not, it's one of the worst close games I've ever seen. Should be a good finish though.

Is it possible FSU forgot to show up once again at Death Valley? Sure looks like it so far.

Big game today...UNC vs. Maryland. Winner had the inside track on bowl eligibility. Loser, well, let's just say it'd take a miracle for the loser to be playing in the postseason.

Clemson needs to get QB Whitehurst out of there. Dude has gotten worse every year.

Edit: Well, I'm only somewhat sorry Charlie.

It's gonna be a great game. Too bad I either have to go to a bar or pay $25 to see it at home (obviously I'll be at the bar).

Final score for the day: SC teams 2, FLA teams 0.

Some pay-per-view channel or ESPN Gameplan.

Unfortunately this is only for the state of SC. So I will have to buy it on PPV if I want to watch it.

so, for some miracle since I have DirecTV, I am able to watch the alternate espn2 channel for free. So, I'm watching the game. So far I'm not liking what I see. :( Except for Jad Dean, of course.

Looks like Clemson will continue its utter domination of the series, even with Spurrier. :D

It's exhilarating that they bring in these big name coaches and we still beat them.

It's so funny a year FSU knocks off three great teams -- Miami, BC, and VT they stumble against the rest of the ACC.

Oh well, Penn St v FSU is gonna be great. Paterno and Bowden hate each other

Anybody see that LSU ass-kicking of Miami last night? You could tell LSU really wanted to put up 50.

Certainly the fight in the lockerroom wasn't a surprise.

On a side note, I didn't realize the irony in LSU beating the "hurricanes" until late in the game. The irony wasn't lost on the sign holder-uppers in the crowd, who just found it too easy.

Wow! The "U" not only got beat on the field, but off of it as well. Guess we won't see an annual LSU v Miami series anytime soon.

Hopefully everything works out next year and we see those teams again playing in a bowl game
